Good old fashioned word of mouth is what is needed. Getting your friends and family to join based on a personal recommendation. As Brit says, Twitter gets a TON of play in the media. Watch Global for instance, they often have the anchor’s Twitter URLs on screen under their names!

Tom, I don’t think that’s really a problem. Twitter gets a lot of play in the media. The media have accepted it (for the most part) – now it’s just the rest of Edmontonians.

Any solutions you see to try and increase local Twitter use? Having more of the media folk on is sure to help, but they’d actually need to plug this stuff on air/in print.

That might account for some of it Jeff. I’m sure some are also using lat/longs via the iPhone or other apps, which I’m not taking into account here (though people using lat/longs are included in the overall stats…just not the communities break down).

I wonder if some of the suburb-dwellers aren’t identifying themselves as “Edmonton,” thinking it’s like Facebook’s limited locales, or just trying to avoid being asked where the heck they are by Tweeps from away.
