I was unable to attend the evening but woul love the opportunity to look at the plans and read about the vision. I love the idea of taking Jasper Avenue and refocussing the Ave on pedestrian use and liveability. The best urban areas in Canada have a focus on community, not traffic, and enable people to interact at a street level. Robson Street in Vancouver. Queen Street (or Bloor, Yong, etc) in Toronto. It is all about people not cars. I am looking forward to learning more.

I have on issue, though. With all of the discussion of open data, I think it is important for the information presented here to be made public and posted on line. Would even like the model to be created in KML and encouraged to be uploaded into Google Earth. That would open the discussion to a larger audience.

Thanks for the summary, Mack. I heard about this, but only briefly. After reading this info, I have to say that I’m very excited by the possibilities. Let’s hope that the end result is something similar to the concept.

I agree Derek, including the old Paramount in some way would be fantastic. I suspect it’s part of the 13% heritage/positive.

Wider sidewalks are needed for a few reasons. They emphasize pedestrian use of the street, rather than vehicular. And if you consider the targeted increase in the number of people living and working downtown, the existing sidewalks will get crowded. I think the traffic issues can be resolved.

I’m unclear why wider sidewalks are required. There is plenty of room on the sidewalks along Jasper, even at their heaviest use times. Further, while the side roads may be able to handle more capacity in terms of numbers, there is the issue of cars accessing these roads (depending on where they are coming from, it may be a pain to turn onto one of these roads as compared to simply getting onto Jasper) and whether Jasper is being over-utilised because of its convenience to the route being chosen.

Sounds great… I think the old Paramount needs to be included in the grand scheme. We are lacking in a large, marquee-style movie theatre that’s not a cineplex. Toronto has the Bloor, Vancouver has the Rio, Calgary has the plaza, hell, even Saskatoon has one! Yet we’ve torn all our grand old movie palaces down.

Really exciting plans, Mack. I wasn’t able to make the session, so I am glad that you were there to recap it!

There are some really interesting changes happening in downtown Edmonton, and I think it is going to be an even more interesting place to live in 5-10 years.

Just a question, do you know where the Veterans Park Intensification Area is located?

On what specifically? I think it’s exciting, and I think Jasper Avenue needs it. As with anything, there are costs and benefits though, and right now we don’t have the complete picture.
