Re: An Open Letter to 104.9 Virgin Radio Edmonton

Rayanne’s post raised valid points. However, one angle has been missed in all of this. Here’s what I wrote to Virgin honcho Pat Cardinal:

“Apart from issues raised here (http://www.boycottvirginradio.blogspot.ca/2013/11/by-rayanne-forbes.html), I’m more concerned with the environmental damage your station’s stunt has caused.

“In television coverage of the event I saw cathode ray television sets being tossed. Did you know that each one of those picture tubes contains up to 5 lbs of lead? That dust you see is death set free.

“While the nearby bikini-clad girls may have been worried about catching pneumonia, they should be more concerned about the long-documented harmful effects of exposure to a substance with no known safe threshold.

“Roof whip might be seen as a comment on society’s attitude towards treadmill consumerism, but it comes at the cost of a teachable moment: responsible behaviour.

“Suddenly, hanging bras on a bridge seems like a saintly gesture.”
