Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:
- Episode 1 of Friends Without Benefits is now live! Learn more in the latest Unknown Studio podcast, and also at Scream Queen B.
- Taylor Smith can now be heard on SONiC 102.9 on weekdays from 10am to 3pm.
- Here’s a very honest post from Gregg on the end of the Inglorious Hipsters podcast.
- If you thought the media saga surrounding the Oilers and analytics guru Tyler Dellow was over, think again. Apparently a journalist emailed the Oilers PR team to ask if they were going to address the “hiring of this prick”, in reference to Dellow. Much speculation and Twittergasms followed.
- Edmonton YouTuber Adelle Ramcharan has shared how much she has made from YouTube: over $500 per cheque.
- As of January 31, Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition will air on 101.7 World FM every Saturday.
- A few job postings to mention outside Edmonton. The Red Deer Advocate is looking for a General Reporter. The Westlock News is also looking for a General Reporter. The Cold Lake Sun is looking for an Editor.
- Here is Karen’s latest Edmonton blog roundup!
- Here are Linda’s latest social media notes. Very interesting that Twitter now supports native video up to 30 seconds long.
- Krysta Martell is the new multimedia reporter at the Sherwood Park News. She has two diplomas from NAIT and did her practicum at Global Edmonton.
- Former Wildrose MLA Bruce Rowe didn’t like the questions he was getting from the media and walked out on a scrum after his first caucus meeting as a PC member.
- Calgary-based Skymatics was hired by Dialog to use a drone over the Walterdale Bridge to capture some otherwise unattainable shots. How long until drones are a regular part of the local media’s toolkit?
- Edmonton filmmaker Christina Ienna won a trip to the Sundance Film Festival thanks to Airbnb.
- The media got to tour the Federal Building recently, which Paula wrote about here. “The Alberta government clearly wanted the press corps to tread softly. That’s why they issued the reporters and photographers who toured the Federal Building with little blue cloth booties.”

- The CRTC has been busy recently! They ruled against Bell and Videotron in a decision that helps to establish Canada as a leader in net neutrality. They also made it clear that over-the-air TV is here to stay. They also decided that starting in 2017, Canadian networks can no longer replace American commercials during the Super Bowl.
- Didn’t see this coming: Andrew Sullivan is quitting blogging.
