The Village

As many of you know my parents arrived in town on Thursday evening, safe and sound, and so today was my first full day with them. We accomplished quite a bit, and yes (sorry Megan – but don’t worry I’d go again), we went to see M. Night Shyamalan‘s The Village tonight.

I loved this movie – it was really, really awesome! I don’t want to give anything away, which is why this post is not titled review as I normally would have done. Instead, all I will say is that Shyamalan further solidifies his place in Hollywood, and Byce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix and especially Adrien Brody all give amazing performances. Really excellent casting for this movie.

The one other thing I will mention is that you English majors will absolutely love this film. In fact, I am sure the movie will leave you drooling for a book to be analyzed in class. Go see The Village!

MSN Web Messenger!

If you’ve ever used ICQ2GO, or whatever the web based version is called, you probably now hate web based messenger tools. But you have to check out MSN Web Messenger with an open mind – it’s awesome! Looks just like your MSN Messenger contact list and chat windows, even plays the correct sounds, the works.

Perfect for when you need MSN and are too lazy to install it, or when you don’t trust the computers at school. Enjoy!

How smart is your showerhead?

Tonight I was chatting with Dickson about his trip, and he mentioned that his friend told him about a hotel in China that has showerheads that follow you! That is, if you step backwards, forwards, or sideways the showerhead will readjust the spray. Pretty darn cool hey?

Made me realize how stupid my showerhead is. Now of course, upon hearing something like this, there are a number of questions that could come to mind, such as: can it interpret movements to change the force or style of the spray?, can it automatically adjust the temperature according to your facial expressions?

However, neither of those was my first question! My first question was simple – what happens if there are two people in the shower? Who does it follow? And here is Dickson’s response:

welp, i would generate the smallest bounding circle that encapsulates both bodies and then aim for the centroid

riiiight….

I think it should dim the lights and turn on some Barry White or something…maybe turn the spray to “massage” mode.

Protect Yourself From the University!

I bet you thought it was bad enough the University robs you of your money for tuition and books every year! Now this:

PuTTY 0.55, released today, fixes a serious security hole which may allow a server to execute code of its choice on a PuTTY client connecting to it. In SSH2, the attack can be performed before host key verification, meaning that even if you trust the server you think you are connecting to, a different machine could be impersonating it and could launch the attack before you could tell the difference. Read: Dana Epp

Guess what client the University recommends for use? Yup! PuTTY! So protect yourself today! If you use PuTTY to connect to the UofA from home, or anywhere off campus, get the newest version here (exe). You can also get it at the official PuTTY site.

DISCLAIMER: I am not suggesting the University of Alberta actually knew about this security hole, nor that they would take advantage of it, but it does make one wonder doesn’t it? What if they were under extreme pressure to crack down on plagarism? Nifty backdoor if you ask me!

Ever Google Yourself?

According to this survey, 39% of respondents have searched for themselves. I don’t know about you, but I find that number extremely low. I know I do a vanity search at least once a week just to see where I am ranking (mostly in relation to that damn Brazilian company).

So let’s do a little informal poll. If you have ever searched the Internet for yourself, leave a “yay” comment, otherwise leave “nay”. I am positive it will be higher than 39%!

From Inuvik to Edmonton!

Tomorrow (well technically today) my Mom and Dad leave Inuvik to start their summer vacation. They are driving down to Edmonton, a trip which according to MapPoint is 3192.2 kilometers if you take the quickest route – a total of 36 hours and 45 minutes. For a map, directions, and more details, look here.

Over 700 of those kilometers will be spent on the Dempster Highway – one of the craziest highways in North America and maybe the world. It really is something else! For pictures and more, look here. For up to date road conditions, look here.

Here’s to a fast, fun, and most of all safe trip! See you on Thursday 🙂 Oh and be sure to check Martin’s site for updates and pictures from their trip.

Warning Signs & Pool!

Went to Reds tonight with Megan to see Arsh and the boys in Warning Signs perform. We got there early and so we went to Starbucks for Caramel Frappucinos – delicious! Next it was time for pool. We played probably six games, and while I won consistently, the last game was definitely the best. Not only did I win, I made every shot behind my back. HARDCORE!

Arsh and the boys finally started playing around 11:30, and did a good set (even though Arsh was forced by his alcohol to forget the words to a song or two). There wasn’t too many people around, so we need to work on that – getting more people out to the shows. There was one girl there, named Kara, who I recognized for some reason. And she was hot. Anyway, I bet Megan $5 she was from McNally. So I went over to talk to her and sure enough, she went to McNally. I can’t seem to find her in the yearbooks though, she said she graduated 2003.

After the show we went to BP’s (again, yes I know) to plan our management of the band (Megan and I that is). And I am happy to report the new Cactus Nachos are awesome!
