Media Monday Edmonton: Update #162

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Karen’s roundup of local blog posts has a new home at Seen and Heard in Edmonton, which is a blog and podcast about blogs and podcasts in Edmonton. I make a cameo in the introduction to the podcast. Follow along on Twitter here and sign up for the newsletter too. Looking forward to great stories about local storytellers!
• Congratulations to Adam on the launch of his new podcast, The Expats. Sharon and I listened to the first episode the other day and really enjoyed it!
• In case you missed it: here is the sixth season wrap up show from The Unknown Studio, featuring new music, stand-up comedy, and interview with Karen Unland on media stuff.
• Capital Ideas Edmonton turned three years old last week – congrats! Here’s their anniversary report. Capital Ideas currently has 2,647 members here in Edmonton.
• Congratulations to yegwed.com on turning one year old! Here’s to many more.
• Mary Bailey, publisher of The Tomato, is Global Edmonton’s latest Woman of Vision.
• Have you got something interesting to share? The Noteworthy is looking for collaborators. Gillian writes: “So far, I’ve been the only voice on The Noteworthy, and it’s time for others to add to the conversation about our fascinating city.” Email her by July 27 if you want to share something.
• A new digital magazine focused on music has launched, called #YEGMusic Magazine. Watch for their first issue in January 2016.
• Flying within Canada this month? Omar brings a bit of Edmonton to both WestJet Magazine and Air Canada’s enRoute.
• Faces of Edmonton is now available as a physical book, featuring about 100 portraits. You can buy it online, or here in Edmonton at Audrey’s, Tix on the Square, and the Muttart Conservatory.
• Back in 2006, Todd Babiak co-wrote a screenplay about Wayne Gretzky called “The Great One” but couldn’t find anyone who wanted to make it. Now, thanks in part to the hype surrounding Connor McDavid, the movie might get made after all.
• The latest edition of Postscript is all about reporting on the McDavid mayhem.
• CBC Edmonton is sponsoring Kids Town at K-Days and will be giving away four sets of family passes starting next week.
• Shaw has an opening for a full-time Supervisor, Online Journalist here in Edmonton.
• Here are Linda’s latest social media notes. I’m happy to see Instagram is going to be supporting larger photo sizes.
• A new CBC research report from May 2015 suggests that more than half of Canadians currently without cable television have cut the cord. The number of Canadians who do not pay for a traditional TV service is growing, unsurprisingly.
• I know this news is a bit old, but wanted to mention it. Starting August 1, Shaw is raising the rates on residential Internet and TV plans, as well as business TV plans. Here’s an FAQ on the rate increase. Sounds like the increase is $3 or so.
• I’m very interested in the idea of news via WhatsApp, which is what the New York Times is experimenting with for Pope Francis’ trips to Ecuador, Bolivia, and Paraguay.
• From the Columbia Journalism Review: The media milestone the media (fittingly?) forgot. Podcasting was enabled in iTunes on June 28, 2005.
