You might have heard that yesterday afternoon the price of oil reached $53.04 USD per barrel. Reasons include concerns about winter fuel supplies in the US, operational problems in the Gulf of Mexico and petroleum industry strife in Nigeria and Norway. However, what you probably did not realize, is that the price of oil has been worse:
While oil prices are about 70 percent higher than a year ago, they are more than $27 below the peak inflation-adjusted price reached in 1981.
So really, the price isn’t all that bad. Or in other words, it could be a lot worse.
The overriding concern among oil analysts these days is the world’s scarce surplus production capacity, or supply buffer, which is dangerously thin at around 1 percent above the global demand of 82 million barrels daily.
Solution? Develop the damn oil sands and destroy OPEC Canada! My god, quit wasting money on old submarines and spend $300 million to develop a more efficient way to extra oil from Alberta’s HUGE reserves. That’s what I would do if I was Dictator of Canada.

In a survey of major multinational companies, 29 percent of respondents predicted that Internet technology will have the largest positive impact on their business in the next five years. That answer was second only to “growth in China,” cited by more than a third of the companies.
A set of 50 companies that Dow Jones calls the “global titans” were sent the survey questions. The companies include Coca-Cola, Exxon Mobil, Dell, IBM and Intel.

Is it just me, or is Podcast.net EXTREMELY slow? I’d love to be able to add BlogosphereRadio.com to the list (or even see if it is on there already) but I can’t get the damn page to load. Displays the top text and then just sits there, forever.

Looks like SpaceShipOne, the craft built by Paul Allen’s Mojave Aerospace Ventures, has won the Ansari X Prize for private space travel:
SpaceShipOne, the craft that breached the Earth’s atmosphere last week, won the $10 million Ansari X Prize for private space travel on Monday when it repeated its feat of reaching 100km.
Just after 8 a.m. PDT, CNN reported that SpaceShipOne reached an altitude of 368,000 feet–well above the 328,000 feet, or 100km, minimum altitude required to win the prize.
Totally cool if you ask me! Could space travel be commercialized as fast as air travel was in the 20th century? Surely it is following a similar pattern of events – many competitions for commercial air travel were held before it caught on. Personally though, I think space travel is incomplete without a moonbase 🙂

If you have been paying even a little bit of attention to the blogging space lately, you might have heard about podcasting. Essentially, this is a mechanism that allows you to subscribe to an RSS feed that supports enclosures – audio files embedded as links that your aggregator can automagically download. Basically the main way to do this now is via Adam Curry’s iPodder.
I guess what we are doing with BlogosphereRadio.com is podcasting. We create audio shows, and publish via our RSS 2.0 feed so that people can download them. And while I like the idea, I think it suffers from one major problem – time. (I also don’t like that it is called podcasting and thus seems limited to iPods when it really isn’t)
With simple RSS feeds, your aggregator can display thousands in a manner that allows you to scan very easily and efficiently. The problem with audio and podcasting right now, is that there is no mechanism to scan. Either you listen to an entire show, or you don’t. And because of that, you are greatly limited in the number of shows you can listen to. I listened to the newest Trade Secrets and Evil Genius Chronicles on the bus this morning, but I didn’t have time to listen to anything else. In that same amount of time, I could have browsed through almost all of the feeds I subscribe to in NewsGator and read the ones that really caught my attention.
Don’t get me wrong, I think podcasting has a ton of potential, and I am happy to be providing some good content right at the beginning of this phenomenon. Yet at the same time, I think there are definitely some larger obstacles to overcome than what blogging faced.
I am writing this from the brand new wireless network at Felicia’s house. I am such a wireless whore. Soon my goal of having wireless everywhere will be realized – one house at a time! Dickson and I are the best damn tech support you don’t have to pay for…LOL
When asked what she thought of having wireless, Felicia said, “I can’t believe Mack and Dickson almost broke my Internet.”
Talk about ungrateful.
Last night was our so-called “Go Fly Or Go Home” dinner at Joey’s Global Grill in South Edmonton Common. We decided it was time to dress up and have a fancier dinner than our normal Boston Pizza events. I think it went quite well, and everyone seemed to have a good time! It’s always nice to see people dressed up anyways 🙂
We had to wait a bit for tables, but I was pleased with the service we got. The staff did what they could to accommodate us, which was nice as they do not take reservations. We had a pretty good turnout too, so we took up three tables – Sharon, Stephanie, Megan, Jane, Violet, Felicia, Tom, Mack, Lisa, Laura, Tess, Joe, Dickson, Alex, Andrew, Renee, and Candice.
Felicia arrived a little late but she brought everyone roses – it was a nice touch! Other highlights included Joe and I getting $10 glasses of wine for $6, our hot waitress who looked exactly like Mischa Barton from the O.C., Megan and I ordering Asian food and getting chop sticks while the Asian people all ordered white food, and the dessert that looked like steak and ice cream. After dinner a few of us went to Felicia’s house to relax and watch Pirates of the Carribbean. Thanks Felicia for being so hospitable!
Well that was fun! Thank you to everyone who came, and I hope you had a good time. We’ll have to make this fancy dinner thing more than a once a year event!
