Ashlee Simpson Takes ‘SNL’ Lip Sync Blame

Lip Syncing is one this…they all do it. ‘but to lie about it, blame it on your band, a computer glitch. I for one would have more respect for the honest truth. The best recovering from a "PR" nightmare was Hugh Grant when he was caught with a prostitute. Without missing a beat…Hugh went on the Tonight Show and quickly addressed his indiscretion. …no excuses, no blaming others…it was Hugh’s crime and he candidly admitted it. So many of today’s celebritys could learn a lesson from real "Stars".

My main problem with this is people who state "everyone does it". Well, that’s not true. Corporate-created "commodities" may do so, but real singers/bands wouldn’t think of it because they’re actual musicians. I don’t blame her, so much as the system which values marketability over talent, of which she has little. She shouldn’t worry though, in 5 years no one will remember who she was anyway, let alone her musical "legacy". She can always cash in on that nostalgia "Girlie Corporate Teeny-Bopper Pop-Rock of the ’00s" compilation someone will hawk on late night tv.

The only problem I have with the lip syncing, is that singing is all she does. Brittany spears dances, so it’s hard, and some people who lip sync play instruments and do other things. But ashlee’s entire career is based on singing, and she doesnt.

I still am a fan though. Weird, I know, but I like her.

I am a fan of Ashlee too. I don’t care if she was just LIP SYNCING, I still like her music.

The thing is – it’s not HER music. She has no hand in writing this stuff. She is singing someone else’s, I mean SYNC-ing someone else’s stuff. Anyone can sound good coming out of a studio. I see and hear no talent here.

Pop music sucks. I guess for 10-16 year old girls an artist(so called)with no talent is fine. For people that think music should be based on talent Ashlee Simpson is just another piece of crap in the major record companies scheme to making money off looks. Just a comment regarding ashlee not writing her own music- well actually she does thats more than other artists can say for themselves

No matter how u cut it she fu$%ed up! It just shows you nowdays it’s all about how (artist try to be) to market yourself instead of having some real talent. Technology (i.e. studio editing) can help all you Britney Spears wannabes but it can also fu#$ your career and reputation forever! Ya know all that yelling that you call "singing" can too harm vocal chords. Too much of a forceful strain or stress that one puts on their voice box will cause them to go to the doctor. It’s almost the same as someone gaining stress fractures in their legs from running SO much only because they’re not a runner.

I watched last night to verify the prevalence of vocal track useage. Anyone who thinks that Ashlee is the only artist today relying on one, is sadly naive. I would be willing to bet that among the backing track users we can list Avril (not punk btw), Britney, Christina A. and many many others. I would be willing to bet that today’s so called ‘alt’, ‘punk’ and ‘emo’ icons are guilty as well. I won’t mention names as I don’t want to start a flame was but none of them are a real match for Sunny Day Real Estate, MBV, the Pumpkins pre 1997 or any of the earlier goups these new guys are emulating.

I honestly suspect this track slection button pushing was done on purpose to discredit Ashlee or maybe as a cruel set up. She was the fall guy or gal and it could as well have been Madonna, Britney or Avril. Don’t blame the artist; blame the industry and feel sorry for the artists in their throes and without the motivation to fight it or get away. The paycheck seems to be mightier than integrity.

There are a lot of musicians who have delivered flawed but passionate and moving performances on SNL AND write AND perform their own music. Nirvanna, Beastie Boys, BJork, Pearl Jam, Green Day… Sting… Boy do I miss the early to mid 90s era. Couple all of that music with talents like Adam Sandler and Mike Myers and you clearly have the best era of SNL. Certainly one of the most redeeming eras in popular music. Not true for earlier or post 1997 era guest artists. Polish and perfection (lip sync tracks) before and after the mid 90s have been and are the norm.

ASHLEE THE SONG WRITER:

I have no idea on whether or not Ashlee writes her own material on her own, with help or not at all. My point above was not to eviscerate her, but remind all of you younger under 25 crowd that there was a time when music on SNL was authentic with visceral passion and imperfections.

Blame the industry not the artist. Daddy Simpson and many of today’s moguls insist that their artists always be the max and model of consumate entertainer perfection. These artists are expected to sing better than Mariah, look like a model 10, dance and have street cred. Street cred for AS and AL is via their own punkette fashions and dressed up bands and for Christina, her new raunchy Diva miss thang look.

As for fashion or appearance, we are all guilty of striving for some "look". One could saw that the most original in this arena were the original Punks of the 70s, metal when it first appeared and New Age and Prog Rockers like Yes. All the new stuff is recycled and conforming nonconformists. I wish Ashlee had done was to match the look with the music to keep the flames down.

It’s quiet disturbing to me that the music giants like Geffen and others can alter reality and fool so many young consumers with images alone. Avrila and Ashlee’s choice of personal and band "fashion" is in diametric opposition to the music they perform. The first time I heard Avril (heard not watched a video) I thought she was a young Country-pop artist and maybe a new Shania Twain. I forget the song, but I came upon it in video form and still thought it was Country, albeit dressed in rock/pop. I was shocked when I heard others referring to her as Punk. I found others referring to her as punk around the time of "Sk8tr Boy".

I blame the industry because it borrows shamelessly from the cred of groups and anti-fashions I grew up with in the early and mid 90s when there were those who dared to be different. All of this you see today, has been recycled and taken from the anti-fashions of SubPop and Alt rockers from the early to mid 90s, or what I call the golden renaissance of popular music.

Think about this.

Maybe Ashlee never wanted all of this. Maybe well meaning or not well meaning, opportunistic adults wanted to have another product like Jessica. I imagine they were wanting another blonde bombshell, but Ashlee rebelled albeit subtly. She died her hair, started dressing "punky" and to her dismay her dad and her label execs went along with it and exploited it. So she can’t escape.

MY PRESCRIPTION:

Try to rush through the rest of your contract with with whatever label you’re signed in blood to, IF it is a product number dependant contract (i.e…. 5 albums)…

Focus on this and ride the wave. Collect much and stay away from too many side projects.

If your contract is years based, try to get out early. Change you legal name to "The Artist Formerly Known As Ashlee Simpson".

Whatever you need to do, get away from those people and find a small independent if you really want to be punk/emo or alt.

In conclusion, don’t blame her. Blame the record execs and those who insists that the music live sounds as good as the CD. At least Ashlee has some humility and good charm. Ashlee and Avril; We would all believe in you more if you went to a small label, worked as part of a band and adopted a REAL alt/punk/subpop sound with grit and imperfections abounding. You both sound and look way too polished. Escape from your product box, cut your Pinocchio strings and do your own walking.

I just feel sorry for her, She shouldn’t have lied about it. I thought she was supposed to be a christian. First it was her bands fault, and then she had swollen vocal chords. So which one was it? She has lost all credibility in my eyes. Oh well, wasn’t much of a fan to begin with. I like her sister Jessica’s music though.

I am pretty upset that she lip synces. I think you should enjoy being on stage and sing. Now, i believe she has no talent on her own and is just following the cash hungury record companies opiton the she should just rib off her sisters so called fame from newlyweds.

I think the only singing with true talent is Christina Augilera when she sings she doesn’t even need a mic. Her voice is so strong and beauitful. On the other hand Ashlee’s lip syncing malfunction doesn’t even surprise me one bit. All of these what i call them is pop up artist who from out of nowhere can sing are all lip syncing examples Paris Hilton,Hilary Duff and Lidnsay Lohan. All have no talent or driven for making a record thier producers just hand them lyrics and they pretend to sing its all a huge joke in this world revolded around money.

I really don’t care. If she needs to lip-sync for voice reasons, that’s ok, but if she does it all the time, that’s not cool. But I don’t care, and I’m still a fan.

My feelings are that SNL in conjunction with record execs, are emphatic about artists sounding good and espouse using prerecorded backing vocal tracks. Eminem used one, but there was no mess up, except for when he lowered his mic arm a second and a voice was still heard.

Ashlee’s blame path. Blaming the band.. first reaction and I think it’s legit. The drummer was suposedly the "button pusher". It was up to him to trigger the next track with backing.

It would also come as know surprise to know that there were also backing instrumental parts as well… Yet the band suffered no recourse.

So it’s not entirely her fault to have freaked and blamed the drummer, but in an attempt to not name people, just said "the band"…

What were her actual words?

BTW… she sounded authentic and pretty good on the AMA live performance.

Come on… we are so derisive and judgemental. It’s not like none of us have stumbled allover ourselves when our hand was caught in da cookie jar.

In my mind, she suffered damage, but she COULD redeem herself by really stepping out and doing some of her own shiznit on a small label and make it all about the music. Her first step so far was to wail on the AMA with unabashedly passionate real voice.

To recap… SNL has a long history of artists using a guide track. I’m a musician (bass) and when singing on a large system in odd arenas, it’s really hard to stay on guide if you don’t have a good mix and monitor system. If you can’t hear yourself that well (instruments blaring over even your own inner hearing), you will drift out of tune… I never have used a guide (singing lessons in practice) live, but have strayed out of whack due to not being able to hear myself and fine tune pitch.

Some artists seem to use the track as a compensation system. Artists also overdub vocal parts in studio recordings… even unison parts, to get a fatter sound. Sometimes backing tracks are used live to thicken the sound of all voices and instruments.

Listen to real unbridled music with power. Check Sunny Day Real Estate, Mudhoney, Pumkin’s "Gish", Nirvanna’s "Nevermind" and some other great early-mid 90s classics. Then return to the rubbish we have today… it’s depressing.

Ok she crewed up… but i think the real issue is people like many on this page who still think she’s the cat’s ass. It is just like her sister who has as the IQ of a six year old child. people think she’s great anyway. SHE’S AN IDIOT! and Ashlee is a fraud. Even if she did lip-sync im still a huge fan. Everyone does it. She just used humor as a cover up. Thats how she deals… she laughs things off. But she didnt find it funny no matter how much people think she has no talent… I really think she does. Its in her blood. ROCK ON ASHLEE!

I also think Ashlee was great on 7th Heaven. I think she needs to persue her acting skills rather than her singing ability. But I think she can get another few years into singing. But I really do think she needs to persue her acting and/or dancing skills. Im still a fan though. I think all she wants is for people to look at her and say "Hey there’s Ashlee Simpson!" not "Hey look its Jessica’s little sister!" I totally understand. I love her cd but truthfully she can work on her live performances. People need to quit doggin her and just listen. Not judge by one little mistake on SNL! I will always be a Simpson Sister fan. Yeah it pissed me off and confused me when Ashlee started doing the hoe-down on SNL, i was like …okkk? whats going on.

Avril does NOT lip-sync…she thinks lip syngers are pathetic and in her every performence you can tell that she is really singing the song. Anyone can tell weather someone is really singing or when someone is not. Ashlee’s was just…..obvious, like Britney’s and Hilary’s (sometimes?). wow. first of all….IT’S "Lip-SYNCING", not "lip singing." ok, now…I think Ashlee Simpson is a neat girl, I like what I have seen of her personality on her show…she is definitely spoiled (and just to pre-empt any attacks, you don’t have to be girly or bitchy or snobby to be spoiled. What I mean is, she has led a priviledged life, as has Jessica, and she was lucky that her sister was signed on her own merits and that she got an acting job on a popular television show, because it helped her launch a singing career) I really wonder if she cares who likes her, she seems to have a close family and a tight-knit group of friends, not to mention loads of cash, so even if she never makes another cent off of her music because people finally realize it isn’t very good, and she manages and invests her money, she’ll be set for life, and then some. Also, as far as the spoiled comment…did anyone notice that she had her own apartment in L.A. at age 19 and also just bought her own house? That’s what I’m saying….it was either her family’s money or her 7th heaven money, but i wonder how much she actually made from that show. Minor characters on semi-hit TV shows don’t really make very much money. I have a question….has anyone else heard that Ashlee claims to have been the youngest person to ever be admitted to the School of American Ballet? I cannot swallow that. I saw the episode where she took a ballet class and while she was better than her friends, she stilled seemed confused and had no respect for a beautiful and classic art form. Plus, why would she do the least graceful dance known to man (a hoedown) when she f**ked up on SNL? If she was a dancer, she couls have made a nice segment out of that.
