Minority Rules in Canada

Well that was an interesting election don’t you think? Especially since the Liberals and NDP did not win enough seats to form a majority, and so must seek the support of the Bloc (Duceppe has pledged support). All in all, I think we’ll be back at the polls sooner than the party leaders are willing to admit.

And while Martin pointed out that there has been successful minority governments in the past, such as the government led by Pearson that adopted our Maple Leaf flag, the average lifespan of such governments is about a year and a half. Especially taking into consideration the party leaders we have today, I give the new minority at best a year and a half of existence. During that time period, I am willing to bet nothing (relatively speaking of course) will get done.

In fact, I think the only thing that might get accomplished is another referendum in Quebec. I say bring it on, and I hope the separatists win. If you don’t want to be in Canada, get out you ungrateful bastards!

Now the real question is this: will the drama of this election finally be more interesting than the corresponding American election? Not likely!

  1. I dunno man, Violet seems to think Quebec is quite important, supposedly they have manufacturing plants and whatnot important to Canada hmm…let’s see

BC is the pacific rim trading partner of Canada AND the tourist capital of Canada for winter.

AB is the oil rich province who will be soon without provincial debt and one of the most progressive education (K-12) systems around.

The Praries will stay unchanged with steady agriculture bringing it up, and natives bringing it down.

Ontario is still the economic, celebrity, and vehicle manufacturing capital of Canada.

Maritimes continue their legacy of fishing and other natural resources.

The North continues their natural resource tapping of diamonds and whatnot. So you know what, let’s see what Quebec has…

The Raellian cult, the Hells’ Angels cult Headquarters, a whole lotta forest and Canadian shield, dislikeable frenchies, French language (which I don’t mind, but won’t miss either), terrorists, irritating Frenchies, a whackload of debt, a hydrodam they can’t finance, OH wait, wait wait wait, they have Montreal, so let’s have Montreal and deport the whole damn province, useless leechers.

Other note, Quebec does have one more important advantage actually besides Montreal, Valcartier, Quebec is one of the biggest research labs for the Canadian Armed Forces, but I’m sure we can find a new home for that, and it’s a huge training facility.

  2. Exactly, everything we have in Quebec that we need can be moved. I dont think Quebec is as important as Ontario in terms of manufacturing and the like.

The only I thing I would miss is the Montreal Canadiens…

  3. Oh shit! I forgot, the Habs just might be the only likeable people there, although, last time they tried to separate, it was so 50/50, so I say if you want in Canada, come to Canada (displace the prarie natives) and leave the frenchies to themselves, we’ll see how well they can sustain themselves.

  4. boys, boys boys. you seem to forget that while quebec wants to separate from canada, there’s absolutely no way they can. we do need the money we get from tourism to quebec. but i wish the rest of the country would stand up and say "thank you alberta for keeping our economy from going down the toilet" it pisses me off so much when i hear ungrateful whining about how alienated the west is. we’re not alienated, but the fact that a good portion of us make our money in either primary industry or agriculture means that we have a different way of life from people in eastern canada. but the only alienation comes from us – we keep electing conservatives (or some incarnation) that makes sure that our supposed interests and needs are heard, but who don’t do anything to form policy in any way. And as long as Ralphie is in power, the east is going to look at us and say "look at those damn conservative rednecks" and keep doing things their way. lets kill him.

  5. Quebec wants to seperate… what’s the big deal for all of you ? You all say that you wouldn’t miss us frenchies ! Well please explain to me why in the last referendum the rest of canada sent about 500 000 peoples with canadian flags in the street of montréal ?

I guess most of you should look back in history books and learn a bit about your past !
