REVIEW: Spider-Man 2 eh!

First off, Happy Canada Day (well belated I suppose). If you’d like to show your Canadian pride for another day, get the Canada Day MSN Picture! To celebrate, Dickson, Andrew, Megan and I went to see Spider-Man 2.

Without a doubt, it is the second best sequel of the summer. The only reason I say second best is because Shrek 2 was clearly better than the first IMO. SM2 has everything you would expect, and a few things you wouldn’t, but that is not what makes it great. Like a lot of the reviews have already said, Spider-Man 2 is great because its the only comic book movie where you can take away the superhero, the bad guy, and the action, and you are still left with a decent story. In this case, it would be a romantic drama between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson. Like I said to Megan, if you took all that out of The Punisher, you’d have a movie where one guy is depressed and ignores the desperate girl who talks to him constantly. Nothing more.

My only complaint about the movie, and I suppose it really isn’t a complaint so much as me being greedy is this; at certain points I craved action, and they just gave me a lot of love. Then when I wanted the love, there was a lot of love, let me tell you! The stunts and action sequences in this movie were pretty awesome too, much better than the first.

Compared with Spider-Man, the sequel is a little more artsy, and definitely more character focused. Put together wonderfully, you really get into the movie and feel for the characters. Throw in a little action, some cool costumes, and Spider-Man 2 is the summer movie of 2004 – you will not be disappointed!

  1. Hey MasterMaq! Glad your arachnifever has now ended and that the sequel did not disappoint you. Although they say with "Spider-Man" filmmaker Sam Raimi returning to direct, the sequel has received almost universally good reviews. I know your brother was very jealous tonight knowing that you were going to see Spider-Man 2! Living in the remote NORTH does SUCK at times. The summer sequel took in $40.5 million in its first day, which was more remarkable since it came out on a Wednesday, when business is slower than on weekends. The first "Spider-Man" debuted on a Friday. Watch it though, because on Friday or Saturday, the sequel SM2 also might have a shot at breaking the single-day gross record held by Shrek 2, which raked in $44.8 million in its second day. Yes your Number One Summer Sequel favorite Shrek 2 also holds the record for highest gross in its first five days at $129 million, another mark Spider-Man 2 could approach. In a month we will come to the big city and take in a MOVIE! See you soon! HUGs

  2. I would imagine they opened it on Wednesday to avoid losing money to a Tuesday cheapticket frenzy at the box office thus losing $5 each ticket which would translate to big sales, but that’s just speculation

  3. no man, they opened it wednesday because this coming weekend is the independence day holiday in the states. and big blockbusters open on long weekends. it’s just the way it works. (the biggest weekend for movies before summer is memorial day) and then independenece day weekend is huge too. (i think they opened it wednesday because lots of americans have friday off, and took thursday to make an extra long weekend, thereby allowing them to make more money than if it was a simple friday opening.

  4. Your exactly correct Megan! Sony originally scheduled Spider-Man 2 to debut the Friday before July 4, then moved it up two days to get a jump on the holiday weekend. With many people off work Monday, the film should draw big audiences that day. Business on Sunday might be slow since that’s the Fourth of July, when many people will opt for barbecues, parades and fireworks displays instead of going to the movies. With the long holiday weekend, the film likely will set a record for biggest first six days, topping the $146.9 million haul for last year’s The Matrix Reloaded. The sequel as I said before though has had such astounding reviews throughout the country, and people are totally keyed in to what an incredible film Sam Raimi has delivered. People will go see this movie!

  5. Glad the movie was good. Next Wednesday has the opening of the movie that I want to see and that is King Arthur. This is supposed to be a really good movie and has had good reviews. You will have to go watch this one for me and leave a posting for it.

  6. Don’t worry I am not going to pass up Kiera Knightly! King Arthur looks pretty good, you’re right.

I wanted so badly for the Matrix sequels to be incredible and set records for years to come, but it looks like Spider-Man will be the series that does it!

  7. Yeah, we were surprised that it wasn’t busier last night. we got there around 615, and i expected a line, but there was none. (Probably because of the drunken debauchery that we certainly didn’t take part in on Whyte Ave)

  8. cool, I never knew that!

it’s about time Clive Owen got more work than just his BMW short films, WHICH, mind you were aweseome!

and the bourne supremacy will not disappoint!

  9. werd. i can’t wait for that one. maybe matt damon will remove his shirt for MORE than 14 seconds (i think that’s what it was). ANYways, go Spidey. But I still think that Julia Stiles should have been Mary-Jane, because she doesn’t make those messed up facial expressions that I THINK are supposed to be concern. I dunno, looks dumb to me.
