Private Wireless banned at University of Texas at Dallas

I dunno, about you, but I think this is a dumb policy. The University of Texas at Dallas has decided that their students will not be allowed to have their own wireless access points on campus; instead they must use only the campus-wide wireless network. Its like telling students they cannot use 2.4 GHz wireless phones because that is what the University uses.

  1. although it doesn’t make much sense that you have to use wireless at a weaker signal than your own router, it does promote the use of the campus wireless services, after all, if ppl were going to just use their own routers, why did the university spend all the money right?

  2. i dont care about a weaker signal…if i lived on campus, i would want to be able to have my own router with my own security so that people are not snooping on my laptop!

  3. but you’re looking at it from a geek’s point of view. don’t forget that most people would be all like ‘oh shit! free internet!’

  4. it is though. most people don’t know about secure wireless. they think of it as internet. my parents had NO idea that people could steal our signal. and lots of people honestly dont know that. they’re students. and they think "free, as in, not having to pay"

  5. i meant it more in general terms. no one wants to have their privacy invaded…so once the students finally realize or are told they could have secure internet, dont you think they’d want it?
