Rogers Wireless fetches Fido

This afternoon it was announced that enough Microcell Telecommunications (who market under the brand name Fido) shareholders tendered to the takeover offer from Rogers Wireless to allow Rogers to claim victory. Rogers Wireless will now become the largest wireless carrier in Canada, with 5.5 million customers, thanks to the $1.4 billion takeover. Telus had also submitted a bid for the company, valued at $1.1 billion, a few months ago but the Microcell board called that offer “inadequate”.

“The new Rogers Wireless is an even stronger communications company, well positioned for continued profitable growth and committed to providing superior service and value to our customers,” said Rogers Wireless CEO Nadir Mohamed in a release.

I suppose it makes sense that Rogers would buy Fido, as both run on a GSM network (Rogers also has TDMA) where as Telus runs on CDMA. If you’re on Rogers, this might be good news for you. After the inevitable integration of the two networks, you might get better coverage/service after all! Then again, this is Rogers, don’t hold your breath.

My prediction for what this takeover will really mean – Rogers will have commercials similar to the Fido ones now. Just like Telus adopted the Clearnet commercials back in the day. Otherwise, the impact will be almost transparent.

  1. you know what? the only thing that could make rogers service better is if their towers all burned to the ground. stupid rogers. they suck you in with really good plans. and then you discover that the service SUCKS. bastards.

  2. hah, their plans aren’t even good compared to telus….
I recently switched my plan over from an emergency plan to a 50 any time minutes and unlimited weekends/evenings plan for $30 bucks a month… I get my bill and they didn’t give me any of those services and I got charged $.50 a minute for all my calls and now my bill is well over $200.00….. My phone is a piece of crap, and it frequently drops calls, cuts out, and I sometimes receive other peoples calls!! Anyway I was looking at telus’ website and the plans are cheaper, more minutes, and the service is far better than rogers offers.

    ROGERS SUCKS!

  3. Yes, Rogers does suck!

Here’s something you should all know!!

I received obscene text messages tonight on my cell phone. The idiot didn’t think that maybe I could trace him by his phone number, which I did. He’s a Rogers Wireless customer!

So, I phoned and complained to Rogers Wireless Customer Service and told them about it and after speaking to the customer service agent for 15 minutes about it he said THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO!!!!! I said, surely you can see that he’s texted me on his account activity and surely you can inquire and call this guy up and say something to him about it. "AH, SORRY MA’AM THERE’S NOTHING WE CAN DO… CALL THE COPS". Then I said, "Okay, so if I call the cops and they call here for account info on this guy do they have to sit on hold for an hour like I did to get through?" "YES", he said. We don’t have a direct line to our supervisors. "Bullshit", I said. "How do their families get through to them?" I said, "Uh, we can’t give out that info", he said. Amazing huh? Even the cops have to wait on hold for an hour to get through to these idiots manning the lines at Rogers.

So this asshole text messager is abusing the service that Rogers Wireless offers him and they won’t do anything about it?? BULLSHIT. Absolute crap.

ROGERS WIRELESS CAN GO TO HELL. Nice to know that after all you pay for for these stupid phones, you get no protection from them whatsoever if someone is abusing it.

    Fuck off Rogers!

  4. th only good thing abot rogers was th ie website that supposedly allowed us to text for free fromthe computer to phone, but i just found out that they do chargethe receiver when ther part of another plan. Now i religously use peekamo.com and booooooourns for rogers.
