The Passion Recut

One of the biggest films of last year will be back in theatres again in time for Easter. The Passion of the Christ has been shortened by six minutes to make it “more palatable for a wider audience” according to Mel Gibson:

“Some of you actually said that you wish you could have taken your Aunt Martha, Uncle Harry or your grandmother or some of your older kids, and you thought that perhaps the intensity of the film was prohibitive to those people. So I listened to that and it inspired me to recut the film to cater to those people that perhaps might not have seen it because of its intensity or brutality.”

Are you kidding me? Six minutes?! You need to cut a good 120 of those 127 minutes to make it more “palatable”. And clearly, I am not the only one who thinks so:

Newmarket had hoped the recut version would receive a PG-13 rating (parental guidance suggested for kids under 13), but the MPAA ratings board ruled it was still graphic enough to merit an R.

So the movie will be released “unrated” instead. Not that it really matters. The people who believe the movie causes miracles to happen would pay full price to see it again regardless of the rating or length. As I advised in my review of the original, don’t eat anything before or while you watch it.

  1. Great. Now parents can be reassured that this *edited* movie is now suitable for their 6 year old who is probably still comatose from watching it the first time around.

  2. lol ironic how this movie was so gory that it needed to be edited out, and is probably more shocking and more disturbing to viewers than the lastest horror movie, which recently, all go likes this:

    "OMFG! what was that?!?1"
    "I saw a shadow"
    <death scream, somebody dies>
    "OMFG! what was that?!"
    <scene ends with mysterious videotape or some vision of a little kid>

  3. Ok – I think there is a bug in the comments – 3rd attempt now – maybe it was the symbols or the wrong code. BTW access to site is slow currently for some reason :).

    So I just read the original entry and the comments. I’ll have to _forgive_ someone for not challenging the last comment on the original entry. Maybe it was just – uh why bother – you can’t beat a good brain washing, unless with an equally strong brain washing and that just leaves a mess of a person. The ‘live and let leave’ philosophy is great until people start telling you what/when/how/why to think and do things – XXXXXXX condescending! But hey – I can look on the bright side – I have the forgiveness immunity idol it seems just so long as I repent like um… hell before I die – so hand over all your cash, since you don’t need it and all those other material things – start with the gadgets 😉

  4. Haha yeah start with the gadgets…everyone seems to tell me that!

    Well, I do not plan to go see the movie again, so I’d be interested to hear what people think – better cut or uncut. Unfortunately, I dont think the majority of the people who WOULD go see it again will have the ability to have a negative opinion to begin with. It would be like The Matrix being re-released and someone expecting me to go and not like it…just wouldn’t happen.

    There is no spoon!
