Here are my weekly Edmonton notes:
- On May 5th, Mayor Mandel delivered his annual State of the City address at the Shaw Conference Centre. You can find both the text and video of his speech here.
- The sixth annual RISE Celebration took place on Thursday evening at the Citadel. RISE stands for Recognizing Immigrant Success & Excellence. You can read about the event at Sharon’s blog.
- Epcor announced this week that it is spinning off its electrical power generation assets into Capital Power, which will become Edmonton’s largest publicly-traded company.
- Ever wonder why Edmonton’s road system is so confusing? Great article on the topic in Avenue Edmonton.
- The Edmonton Public Library and the Book Publisher’s Association of Alberta are sponsoring a new award. Called the Alberta Reader’s Choice Award, it will promote the works of Alberta authors and publishers and is worth $10,000. For more, check out the news release (pdf).
- Don’t forget – DemoCampEdmonton7 takes place on Wednesday evening!
- Also on Wednesday, from 3-8pm at the TransAlta Arts Barns, is the Festival Volunteer Fair.
- The Catalyst Theatre’s latest production, Nevermore, is on until May 17th. Sharon and I saw it today – it was fantastic!
- The City launched a new website for Edmonton Youth this week.
- EEDC relaunched Edmonton.com this week with a fresh new look. I like it, but I wish the site had more RSS feeds.
- Why are Edmontonians such good hosts? Great article from Scott McKeen this week.
- Make sure you use the crosswalk when walking around downtown this week – the City and EPS are cracking down on jaywalkers, and the fine is a hefty $250. For drivers – signs about the next “big ticket event” to catch speeders have started appearing on major arteries.
