• I really like the new metronews.ca website. Powered by WordPress, I find the new Edmonton website much easier to read and navigate! What do you think?
• Despite some blog posts receiving thousands of likes and tweets, an online poll conducted by Metro found that 44.6% of participants still look to traditional media when making their voting decisions. Maybe that’s because the coverage is hard to avoid…
• This is awesome. Scott Lilwall has created The Canadian Access to Information Database, which lets you search through all federal access to information requests. Nice work Scott!
• Here’s the very long list of finalists for the 38th Annual Alberta Film & Television Awards. Edmonton organizations have done quite well: “Aquila Productions of Edmonton leads the nominations with 13 nods in various categories. The half-hour comedy series, “CAUTION: May Contain Nuts” from Edmonton-based Mosaic Entertainment had the most nominations for an individual production with 12.” I’m so happy to see Sally nominated for the edmontonian presents!
• Mike Ross at Gig City wrote an entire article on Mike Wellensiek, better known as Mike the Posterman. I love it.
• Also at Gig City: Garner Andrews, morning man of mystery. “In a land of tweet-reading nitwits, Garner Andrews stands alone.”
• Yay! The Unknown Studio has selected a location for their upcoming live show – it will be recorded at Happy Harbor downtown!
• Marty Forbes has highlighted a number of significant media anniversaries coming up this year. CISN FM will celebrate 30 years in June, and The Bear turns 20 this fall.
• Emily Mertz has joined the web team at Global Edmonton. Tuesday was her first day.
• Congratulations to Global Edmonton for picking up the RTDNA Murrow Award for their Slave Lake Fire coverage.
• The Edmonton Journal is looking to hire a full-time reporter to cover criminal justice issues as part of a three-member crime bureau.
• Bill MacLoughlin has started blogging with The MacLoughlin Report. He appropriately gave kudos to Daveberta in his opening post! We’ll see how long the blog lasts (the reality is most fail in short order, and I don’t have a lot of faith that anything created during an election will last beyond it).
• Here’s a pretty innovative project from Ryan Jackson at the Edmonton Journal: Ask the party leaders questions over coffee. Definitely worth a look if you haven’t already come across it!
• There is a lot of speculation that Alberta’s film & television producers are going to be hit hard by last month’s federal budget cuts.
• Edmonton Journal sports writer Evan Daum has been recognized by the Canada West Universities Athletics Association.
• It stings, Cory, it stings! In an interview with The Province, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider said: “Nobody cares about Edmonton so nobody hates them. It’s that simple.” Unsurprisingly, that got some local folks pretty upset. He later apologized.
• Here’s a great shot of the old CKUA building.
• Ugh. The Journal Goosecam is back.

• For updated election projections, check out ThreeHundredHeight.com. Here’s their post from earlier today highlighting how well the Wildrose are doing in recent polls.
• If you haven’t already, check out Alberta Tweets. It’s a project of Armadillo Studios that is visualizing the election on Twitter – who is tweeting, what are the common topics, etc. Here’s the infographic for March 25 to April 1.
• Fil Fraser was among the deserving winners of the Diamond Jubilee Medal: “Fil Fraser is an Alberta and Canadian pioneer in the areas of broadcasting, film, television production, newspaper publishing and multiculturalism. He has written extensively on human rights and multiculturalism issues and served as Chairman of the Alberta Human Rights Commission. He also has been instrumental in developing the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards. Fil is a Member of the Order of Canada and the Alberta Order of Excellence.”
• There’s some great Edmonton representation in this list of Alberta’s top 10 style bloggers.
• Metro Edmonton has launched a bit of a redesign, and according to the latest NADbank figures, has grown its readership by 31%.
• According to those same figures, combined print & online weekday readership for the Edmonton Sun increased 2.9% in 2011 compared to an increase of 1.2% for the Edmonton Journal. In February, the Sun’s online traffic reached 350,000 unique visitors.
• Congratulations to @britl on posting 50,000 tweets!
• This is pretty amazing! Joy Roberts White, a former reporter who worked for Reuters and the BBC, recently celebrated her 102nd birthday at the Edmonton General! She was an Edmonton print and broadcast journalist for CTV, CBC and CKUA from the ’50s to the ’90s. Nice job Laurie on sharing that story!
• Journal photographer Larry Wong has been nominated for an award from the Canadian Association of Journalists for his work during the World Juniors, among other things.
• Marty has some updates on local radio news. SONIC’s Garner Andrews won Morning Show of the Year and Al Ford won Program Director of the Year at the Canadian Music Week awards.
• Check out Garage Shots, a new automobile magazine created by local photographer Darren Greenwood. The Journal wrote about it this week.
• I missed mentioning the launch of Phabrik, a new fashion, art, and design magazine from Sandra Sing Fernandes. As long as you’re on a device with Flash, check it out here.
• Congratulations to the winners of the Alberta Magazine Awards for 2012! The full list is here. Great to see Ruth Kelly recognized in the Achievement in Publishing category!
• Here’s more on the drive to save the old Edmonton Journal paper shacks. "If nobody wants it, it will eventually get demolished, like everything else."
• The First Alberta Campus Radio Association (FACRA) is holding its AGM on June 7 at the U of A, and they’re looking for board members too.
• Congrats to fusedlogic on closing a round of equity financing and the subsequent expansion! They’re hiring!
• The latest issue of Boyle McCauley News is online!
• Kelly Ripa is in Alberta this week, filming four episodes of her show in Banff. She was given the white cowboy hat. What’s the Edmonton equivalent for VIPs? Do we have one? Do we need one?

• It’s official: Election Day in Alberta will be Monday, April 23. I love that Elections Alberta has embraced Twitter as a key communications tool. The candidates themselves think that social media is going to have a big impact on the election too. The hashtag to use is #abvote!
• Unsurprisingly, most of the local media have sections devoted to the election (let me know if I have missed any):

• You undoubtedly heard about the unfortunate design of the Wildrose Alliance’s campaign bus last week. On Friday, they posted an updated design to Facebook with this message: “New and improved Wildrose campaign bus! We make mistakes, we fix them, we move on! Ready for the election! ~ Team Wildrose”. That photo has 717 likes, 199 comments, and 75 shares at the moment. Yes, I think social media is having an impact!

• The Edmonton Journal launched its redesign last Tuesday. The new masthead features the Caslon typeface in blue, the same one that was used in 1903 when the paper started. There are a number of layout and content changes as well. The online layout hasn’t changed too much, however.
• The third season of The Unknown Studio is now in the homestretch, and it’s going to go out in style. Adam and Scott are planning to record the finale in front of a live audience! They’re looking for input and ideas, so get in touch and tell them what you think. And be sure to check out S03E12.
• Paula Kirman has been posting photos of rallies and marches in our city for years, an important public service for Edmonton. As she wrote: “After a while, the website became one of the largest historical archives of citizen engagement in Edmonton at such events.” Now she’s taking the next step, and has relaunched her site with a new name – Radical Citizen Media.
• Garry McKenzie has been appointed Regional General Manager for Corus Radio Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg, effective April 2. He was most recently the GM of Corus Radio Vancouver.
• Veronica Jubinville started at CTV Edmonton last week. She was previously at CTV Saskatoon, though she is no stranger to Edmonton having completed the Television Broadcast program at NAIT.
• Russell James is still heading to The Bounce, but won’t start until early May.
• Former Edmonton Journal reporter Steve Lillebuen was promoting his new book about Mark Twitchell in Edmonton today.
• And you thought you consumed a lot of news! Interesting profile of Rob Duerr, a CB and Ham radio repairman who is addicted to listening to police scanners.
• This new “Listener Driven Radio” service that Astral Media is deploying to Virgin Radio in April sounds pretty interesting. With it, you’ll be able to provide input and get alerts via SMS, instant messaging, email, and with social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.
• On Friday evening, Brittney is throwing a party to celebrate her 50,000th tweet! She will be just the 16th person in Edmonton to reach the milestone (at least four of those are bots, actually).

• Some very good news for Global in Alberta – Karen Unland is quarterbacking the upcoming provincial election coverage for both Global Edmonton and Global Calgary!
• Speaking of Global Edmonton, they’re looking for three “enthusiastic” Morning News viewers to join the political panel as part of their election coverage. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 23 at 4pm. Rules and regulations are here.
• Avenue Edmonton profiles Rick Harp, host of Edmonton AM on CBC. He has been a great addition to the local media scene!
• Have a passion for public affairs and news programming? CJSR is hiring a news coordinator! The deadline to apply is April 2.
• CTV Edmonton has received a RTDNA award for its coverage of the Slave Lake wildfires last May.
• Do you think we should save Edmonton’s paperboy shacks? I had no idea these existed: “The shacks were officially called “district offices” and were an essential part of The Journal’s home delivery system starting in 1913 with seven paperboys. The boys would go to the shacks right after school and wait for the delivery truck to arrive with that day’s edition.”
• I’m really liking the new clean design for The Unknown Studio!
• GigCity covers Story Engine, the new venture from Todd Babiak and Shawn Ohler.
• Recent tweets from some local sports journalists caught the eye of the Calgary Herald!
• For the last week, the Edmonton Journal has been featuring mastheads of the past, such as the big yellow box. Tomorrow they launch a redesigned look and content changes.
• The Edmonton Commons is looking for “official” commenters, people who are willing to take the time to comment with their real names.
• Mike Daisey has been making news around the world with his bold lies about the state of Apple’s factories in China. There has been some excellent discussion about journalism and truth as a result.
• Is anyone surprised by this anymore?  “In the poorest showing since 1984, advertising revenues at newspapers last year fell 7.3% to $23.9 billion, according to figures quietly published Wednesday by the Newspaper Association of America.”
• The big news here in Canada this week was Bell Canada’s decision to purchase Astral Media for $3.38 billion. The three local radio stations impacted are The Bear 100.3 FM, Virgin Radio 104.9 FM and Team 1260 AM.

• I was very pleased to see some coverage in the Journal for the Prairie Belles Podcast! The duo behind the podcast, Daneel Irons and Lisa Nicole Grace, celebrated two years of recording this weekend – congrats!
• The Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards are coming up next week, and Edmonton is well-represented. Virgin’s Lochlin Cross and Sonic’s Adam Thompson are both nominated for Music Director of the Year, Sonic’s Garner Andrews is nominated for On Air Talent, and Sonic’s Al Ford and The Bear’s Rob Vavrek are nominated for Program Director of the Year. Also, Virgin, Now, K97, CISN, World FM, 630 CHED, The Bear, and Sonic are up for various Station of the Year awards.
• The Edmonton Journal has received two 2011 National Newspaper Award nominations. Sheila Pratt was recognized for “her investigation of the climate of fear and intimidation in Alberta’s public life” and a team of reporters, editors and photographers were recognized for their coverage of the devastating Slave Like wildfires.
• The Journal and the Calgary Herald are also up for a joint International Newsmedia Marketing Association (INMA) Award for the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships.
• This is really cool, congratulations Karen! “After a successful pilot project that brought 235 students from nine different classes into the media lab over the past few months, The Journal is ready to create a full-fledged site-based school program for the 2012-13 school year.”
• Last night was the final broadcast at CTV Edmonton for Scott Roberts – he has accepted a position at CTV British Columbia. Best of luck!
• Purchasing a copy of The Journal got a bit more expensive this month. On March 1, the price of a single copy of The Journal rose by 25 cents for the Sunday through Thursday editions.

• The Corus Radio Group was able to raise $1.24 million in last week’s Stollery Children’s Hospital Radiothon. Marty Forbes has that plus a ton of other local radio news in his Sunday column. He notes the surprise announcement that Doug Rutherford is stepping down from Corus at the end of March.
• BlogWest kicks off on Thursday! More than 200 bloggers from across Western Canada are slated to attend. Follow along on Twitter using the hashtag #blogwest.
• Global Edmonton’s Julie Matthews was among the eight Albertans recognized as consumer champions for their work in protecting consumers in 2011. The story she won the Award of Merit for? Julie investigated online romance scams and posed as a potential love interest to expose a romance scam artist! Here is Global’s story about the news.
• Here is Alex Abboud’s latest post as blogger-in-residence at The Journal. He got to sit in on an editorial board meeting with Raj Sherman.
• Elise Stolte is looking for feedback on The Quarters project as she explores the topic. There’s a related assignment up on The Bridge too.
• Nominations for the 30th annual Western Magazine Awards have been extended until March 16. The awards ceremony will be held in Vancouver on June 15.
• To celebrate its 30th anniversary, FAVA is hosting FAVA Fest from March 20-24 and will holding an awards gala as well to recognize outstanding documentaries, music videos, and more. Five awards of excellence and three production grant awards will be presented on the 24th!
• The Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA) and Crossroads Television Systems (CTS) have launched a new mentorship program for individuals to receive hands-on training experience in film and television production. The deadline for applications for the new program is March 30.
• As I mentioned previously, Laurie Callsen will soon be joining Metro Edmonton. Here’s her farewell column for the Camrose Canadian.
• Calgary native Pat Kiernan, who was previously a reporter at CTV Edmonton, is apparently keen to replace Regis Philbin on Live with Regis and Kelly.
• Here’s a bit of history for you – 48 years ago today fish & chips were just 40 cents per order at A&W Drive Ins! There were also stories on the new downtown library, and the last remaining outhouses in the city.
• The March issue of Boyle McCauley News is now online!
• I haven’t found much use for Pinterest yet (mind you I haven’t given it a chance really) but dozens of other Edmontonians have (such as the City itself). I took a look, and it turns out there are a few media organizations on it as well! There’s a quarterly magazine called Urban Infant that has a page, Global Edmonton has a page, and both the Edmonton Journal (launched on January 26) and The Bridge have pages. There are a few journalists with their own pages as well, such as Liane Faulder. Will be interesting to see how use of Pinterest evolves locally!
• Avenue Edmonton celebrated the launch of its annual food issue this evening! In addition to the 25 Best Things to Eat they have a new list for 2012, Edmonton’s Best Restaurants. Corso 32 was named Best Restaurant, while Tres Carnales was named Best New Restaurant.

• Most awesome story of the week? The Oilers signed Hemsky to a $10 million, two-year deal, prompting someone with control of the Calgary Flames account on Twitter to post: “$10 million over two years for Hemsky is the funnist thing I’ve heard in a long, long time. I hope it happens. #whatajoke.”
• Here is Karen’s latest Edmonton New Media Roundup. She wrote about MediaCamp, as well as a bunch of other cool things happening in the community. We had a dinner with the MediaCamp organizers on Friday, the first step toward answering the question, “what next?”
• It looks like retirement isn’t for Graham Hicks, because in addition to writing restaurant reviews he is now also going to be writing a weekly business column called Hicks on Biz. Looking forward to it!
• Murray Blakely is one of this year’s RTNDA Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients. He spent 42 years in the media, including 38 in radio and television and 26 as a traffic reporter. He was among those covering the 1987 Edmonton tornado. He retired in 1996.
• Brittney has the scoop on two new members of the iNews880 team!
• Alex Abboud posted an interesting entry a couple weeks ago at the Community Newsroom blog. He shared some observations from his first few weeks as the Journal’s blogger-in-residence.
• 91.7 The Bounce is celebrating its 7th birthday this year. The bash is scheduled for March 22 and features Pitbull and Flo Rida.
• Global Edmonton’s Laurel Clark is among the journalists traveling to Africa as part of the joint Shaw Africa Project between Global News and Journalists for Human Rights (JHR). She’ll be in Liberia! Here’s a tweet of support from Vassy Kapelos.
• Program director Russell James is returning to The Bounce, the station he left in 2009 when Hot 107 was launched.
• Last week the CRTC approved a new FM station in Leduc. 93.1 The One FM will play the hits of the 80s, 90s, and today. You know, like every other station.
• Jasmine Franklin, who recently launched her own media business, has joined Councillor Kerry Diotte’s office as a communications/research coordinator.
• Congratulations to Dana DiTomaso who is CBC Edmonton’s new technology columnist! You can hear her every Monday morning on the radio.
• Laurie Callsen starts as Metro Edmonton’s new digital reporter on March 18. It’ll be great to have Laurie back in Edmonton!

• The deadline for applications for the 2012 Greg Clark Award is March 16. Last year’s winner, Marion Warnica, recently joined CBC Edmonton.

• Jasmine Franklin has left the Edmonton Sun to startup her own thing! She now has a freelance media company called Jasmine Franklin Media, and she’ll also serve as “a political sidekick for an Edmonton city councillor.”
• They take a lot of work, but I love it when bloggers write a series of posts on a topic. Check out Kendall’s Edmonton Wedding Guide over at City and Dale.
• On Friday, Telus’ new 4G LTE wireless network went live here in Edmonton. As long as you have a capable device, you can take advantage of the network – there are no new rate plans or premium charges. Learn more at http://telusmobility.com/4GLTE.
• In the latest episode of The Unknown Studio, Scott & Adam talk to Alex Abboud about being the Edmonton Journal’s blogger-in-residence.
• Some love for local fashion bloggers, and in particular, local male fashion bloggers!
• Marty Forbes checks in on retired NHL Hall-of-Fame broadcaster Rod Phillips: “Rod’s doing well…and really enjoying his retirement.”
• Taste Alberta is hiring a manager here in Edmonton. The closing date for applications was February 8, so it’ll be interesting to see who gets the job.
• Their website is down right now, so I can’t get to the actual post, but Alberta Venture is hiring an editorial intern.
• Pretty interesting story from Jay Palter: “It all started with a call from a national reporter about a week before the new census data was released. She mentioned that she’d seen my blog (this one) and wanted to ask me some questions about our move from Toronto to Edmonton.”
• 48 Hours aired their episode ‘Screenplay for Murder’ on the Mark Twitchell case on Saturday. Read more here.
• Here’s an update from Avenue Edmonton on the push for an SCTV Monument.
• Yikes, that’s not a very happy headline: This time, the CBC cuts will be noticeable. Not sure how Edmonton will be impacted.
• The half hour series Come Dine With Me Canada is coming to Edmonton. No word on when exactly, but you can apply by emailing comedinewithme@propertelevision.com or calling 1-866-598-2591.
• On February 3, CBC hosted a forum on downtown safety, which you can watch here. The panel featured Acting Supt. Tony Harder of Edmonton Police, Kyle Dube, executive director of You Can, Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel, Jan Fox, executive director of Reach Edmonton and Chris Buyze, president of the Downtown Edmonton Community League.
• Some cool news for Gord Steinke – he has been appointed Honourary Lieutenant Colonel of the 15th Edmonton Field Ambulance, part of the 41st Canadian Brigade Group. You can learn more about the 15th Field Ambulance here.

• The mystery of the “red scarf” billboards has been solved. After much speculation, it turns out the billboards are part of a new advertising campaign for Now! 102.3 FM.

• MediaCamp Edmonton is taking place on Saturday the World Trade Centre downtown. Check out our schedule, speakers, and sponsors, and get your tickets now!
• Old news, but I haven’t written about it here yet: Alex Abboud was selected to be the Edmonton Journal’s first blogger-in-residence.
• A couple of losses for CTV Edmonton to report: Simon Ostler is moving to Toronto to join CP24, and Richard Ozero is also departing, though I haven’t yet seen when or to where.
• I’m not sure how long ago this happened, but I see that GIG CITY is now a news source in Google News!
• Rogers is seeking submissions for the Alberta Local Programming Initiative. They cite “Oil Change” and “The Quon Dynasty” as examples of the kinds of shows they are looking for – “local stories that have relevance to a national audience, with an emphasis on exploring exciting ideas and worlds that have not been exposed on television.” The deadline to get your proposal in is February 15, 2012.
• Here is an updated list of all Edmonton Journal accounts on Twitter. It has really grown over time!
• To help promote Expansion 2012, the Edmonton International Airport joined forces with The Bridge to have bloggers cover the test day that happened on Saturday. Maybe I’m missing something, but I only see two reports, and really only one that looks related to the weekend. I guess we’ll have to wait to see how successful this experiment is.

• Premier Alison Redford invited the media to join her on the LRT last week as she traveled to the Jubilee Auditorium.
• Steven Sandor, Editor of Avenue Edmonton, and local bloggers Chris Falconer and Duncan Kinney are among the presenters scheduled to wow us at Pecha Kucha Night 12 on Thursday evening. Looking forward to it!
• Global Edmonton’s Su-Ling Goh has joined Twitter. Here’s her first tweet.
• Brent Wittmeier reflects on two years at the Edmonton Journal in a recent blog post. He estimates that the Journal printed “roughly 100,000 copies of a 960-page book of Wittmeierian observations, split-infinitives, and awkward transitions.” In a follow-up post, he shared his “favourite” story of 2011.
• I love that the Edmonton Sun uses existing off-the-shelf tools instead of trying to roll their own. Disqus for comments, and Wufoo for scoops are two examples!
• Derek Zona over at The Copper & Blue calls out the local media for pumping up the Oilers rebuild without much critical analysis.
• If you don’t already subscribe to Michael Geist’s blog, you should. Lately he has been covering SOPA, ACTA, and Bill C-11.
• The February 2012 issue of Boyle McCauley News is now online!
• Targa Communications launched the Alberta Media Network last week, a news release production and distribution service. “Twitter will also play a major role in the operations of the company. News releases will be posted on the social media site so that the public can view them and get involved in the discussion as well.”

• In case you missed it: the federal government plans to drop the so-called “Twitter ban” on posting early election results.
• Here’s a bit of criticism of the proposed downtown arena that I wouldn’t have thought of, courtesy of Terry Jones: “Do you have any idea of how many arenas in North America forgot to build press boxes over the years? It’s in double figures!”
• Jana Pruden of the Edmonton Journal is starting a local press club. Contact her for details, or follow @yegpressclub on Twitter!
• Here is Karen’s latest Edmonton New Media Roundup. Tons of good clicks to be had, as always.
• Over at the Community Newsroom blog, Karen recapped the first few months of the media lab. It’s great to hear that so many students – 175! – visited as part of the City Hall School program!
• Here’s a profile of CTV Edmonton’s meteorologist Josh Classen at the St. Albert Gazette.
• Edmonton’s NextGen has started a guest blogging series. The first entry, by Jessica Zapata, focuses on health and fitness.
• Here’s a fascinating post by Lucas Timmons for the Online News Association. He talks about how he mapped a dozen years of homicides in Edmonton – the tools he used and the lessons he learned along the way. Good stuff! (If you’re looking for more on homicides, check out my statistics & trends post).
• Intriguing headline at GIG CITY: Who broke the radio star? It’s a pretty good read. An excerpt: “Edmonton radio plays its part in the great cycle of life. Sonic 102.9 is the best in town for breaking new music. This is the consensus of all the Edmonton-based major label promotion reps, who wish to remain anonymous, all four of them.”
• At the Edmonton Journal’s Community Advisory Board meeting last week, we got to sit in on the 4pm news meeting. Managing Editor Stephanie Coombs was both entertaining and informative! I was happy to hear she dislikes the “crowd pleasing” photos, like puppies dressed as cats.
• Dave continues to illustrate the value of a simple list with his Alberta Election Candidate Update series.
• The 2012 Alberta Magazine Awards will be handed out on March 22 in Calgary. You have until January 31 to submit an entry for the Showcase Awards.
• I still don’t like Avenue Edmonton’s idea for an SCTV monument in Edmonton.
• Registration is now open for BlogWest. The early bird price is $199. After January 29, it jumps to $249.
