I guess 250 is a bit of a milestone! If you’re new to Media Monday Edmonton, here’s my first entry from February 7, 2011. Thanks to everyone who has sent in tips and suggestions over the years, and thanks for reading!

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Congratulations to Ken Regan, retired CEO of CKUA, on winning the Syncrude Award for Excellence in Arts Management at tonight’s 30th annual Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts. Congrats also to Jenna Marynowski, author of the After the House Lights blog, on winning the John Poole Award for Promotion of the Arts!
• Corus Entertainment and Shaw Communications announced on Wednesday that Shaw TV stations in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver will be shut down effective Tuesday, August 15, 2017 affecting approximately 70 positions. Starting September 1, 2017, “Global News will receive approximately $10 million annually” in funds redirected from those stations. Apparently viewership at the three Shaw stations declined by an average of 75% over the last six years.
• Congratulations to CBC Edmonton, CTV Edmonton, and Global Edmonton on your RTDNA Prairie Region Award wins! Here is Janice Johnston with CBC’s haul.
• Archive magazine has launched an ATB BoostR campaign to “stock Archive in more towns and cities across Alberta”. So far they’ve raised 34% of their $7,500 goal.
• Here’s an interview with Matthew Stepanic, editor at Glass Buffalo.
• In his latest column at the Sun, Marty Forbes wrote about 630 CHED’s Bob Layton and his new book.
• CKUA listener Bert Knowler captured the moment the station “came back from the brink after 5 weeks off the air.”
• Eighteen Bridges is celebrating the launch of its 10th issue at a part on Thursday, May 11 at Yellowhead Brewery.
• Here’s a recap of the last CPRS event which focused on the Fort McMurray fires and crisis communications.
• Congratulations to the winners of the 2017 AMPIA Rosies!
• The Bonnyville Nouvelle is looking for a General Assignment Reporter.
• CANADALAND’s Jesse Brown has written a book and will be at Festival Place in Sherwood Park to launch it on May 15. “The Canadaland Book Launch show will consist of a series of comical stories accompanied by slides, short films and highlights of Canadian film and tv.”
• Wednesday, June 21 is National Aboriginal Day in Canada and APTN will be broadcasting live from Victoria Park. The concert from 8-10pm that day will be webcast too.

• Facebook has promoted Alex Hardiman, formerly of the New York Times, to its new head of news products role.
• I am convinced that Ryan Seacrest must have a couple of clones – he just added co-host of Live with Kelly and Ryan to his already impressive resume!
• When you think of Twitter, does video come to mind? No? Well, Twitter is banking on video with a series of new announcements.
• According to NiemanLab, Longreads has raised about $250,000 from “thousands of members” since it added memberships in 2012. Now the site is planning to spend more on original content.
• Instant Recall: “Facebook’s Instant Articles promised to transform journalism — but now big publishers are fleeing.” Worth a read.

• Omar and Damian Asher will be at Chapters in West Edmonton Mall on Tuesday, May 9 to discuss their new book on the Fort McMurray wildfires.
• In the latest Edmonton Quotient newsletter, Jeff highlighted the power of investing in independents. “We can now directly fund journalism, criticism, publishing, podcasts and whatever comes next,” he wrote.
• Global Edmonton’s Kevin Karius was doing a live-hit from Ford Hall at Rogers Place when the Oilers scored the winning goal in overtime of Game 5! Awesome. Here’s more on this from NHL.com.
• 630 CHED’s play-by-play announcer Jack Michaels hollered the word “overtime” for six seconds after that goal was scored!
• Karen Unland will be speaking at PodSummit in Calgary about how to build a podcast network.
• Marty Forbes is launching a podcast called Media in YEG in which he will “chat with some of the leading broadcasters and journalists in Edmonton about their careers and lives in media.” Sounds great!
• Here are the latest blog and podcast roundups from Seen and Heard in Edmonton.
• The Bonnyville Nouvelle and Lakeland Regional is looking for a general assignment Reporter/Photographer.
• The TELUS World of Science is looking for a Digital Marketing Specialist.
• The Writing Stick is a conference that will “foster conversations on editing and publishing Indigenous stories and writers.” It takes place June 8-10 at the University of Alberta.

• From The Atlantic: Yahoo’s Demise Is a Death Knell for Digital News Orgs
• Sounds like the FTC is starting to crack down on celebrities posting sponsored items on Instagram. It’s not enough to use #sp nor is it okay to put the #sponsored hashtag right at the end.
• “The shift from advertising to subscription models is a revolutionary moment for our craft,” writes David Skok.
• Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is launching a crowd-funded news platform called Wikitribune that will attempt to combat fake news with volunteer fact checking.
• Reuters has launched a new initiative called Backstory that aims to provide more transparency around its reporting process.

• Greyson Knutson was one of the local victims of Bell Media’s latest cuts. “After agonizing for an entire week as to whether or not I was going to stay with CTV, I have decided to walk away,” he wrote.
• Omar Mouallem has been working on a new book called Inside the Inferno with Fort McMurray fire captain Damian Asher about last year’s devastating wildfires. It goes on sale May 2 and is available for preorder now.
• Marty Klinkenberg’s book The McDavid Effect: Connor McDavid and the New Hope for Hockey is one of the shortlisted nominees for the 2017 Alberta Literary Awards.
• The Edmonton Broadcaster Club’s Spring Luncheon takes place on Wednesday and features 630 CHED’s Bob Layton.
• Jonny Wakefield is one of the newest reporters at Postmedia here in Edmonton. He was most recently at the Dawson Creek Mirror.
• Mitch Goldenberg is moving from the Spruce Grove Examiner/Stony Plain Reporter to work for Postmedia in Edmonton at the Journal/Sun/Examiner. “I hit the jackpot landing my first full-time job in such a bustling, welcoming community,” he wrote.

• Cam Tait reflects on three years of writing Tait on Eight. “Deep down I had always wanted to work for the Sun because of my newspaper mentor and hero, Paul Rimstead,” he wrote.
• More than $9,000 was raised to support the Alberta Cancer Foundation at Global Edmonton’s fourth annual wardrobe sale on the weekend. Any clothes not sold “will be donated to women’s shelters around Edmonton.”

• Postmedia says additional cuts are on the way after posting a 13.5% drop in revenue in its latest quarterly financial report. “We must continue to work towards a cost structure that reflects the revenue reality that we face,” said CEO Paul Godfrey. This is despite reaching the previously announced 20% salary cost reduction target.
• Elizabeth Renzetti wrote in the Globe and Mail that when local news outlets shutter due to cuts, we all lose.
• Here are the winners of the 2017 Pulitzer Prizes.
• Vassey Kapelos has taken over The West Block, which Global calls “Canada’s #1 Sunday political TV show”.
• Dave Winer wrote last week about a home for news on the open web. “I know I can’t convince journalism to give up on getting the tech industry to make it easy for them, so I’m pitching a different idea,” he wrote. “Have a backup plan, in case it doesn’t work out with Facebook.”
• Here is the full TV schedule for the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

• In his latest column in the Edmonton Sun, Marty Forbes pays tributed to Dr. Dick Rice, “an early pioneer of Edmonton media who started CFRN TV in 1954 (Now CTV) CFRN Radio in 1927 (now TSN) and CFRN FM in 1951 (now The Bear).” The City has named 199 Street SW (south of 23 Avenue) “Richard Rice Boulevard” in his honor.
• Bell Media eliminated 18 positions across the country at CTV stations last week, including two here in Edmonton.
• Fish has the scoop on CKUA’s Calgary expansion and the 20th anniversary of the shutdown in 1997. Lots of history there. “Along with its network of 16 FM transmitters, the station was also Canada’s first — in 1996 — to stream its broadcast online.”
• We published our latest Taproot story last week on noisy leaf blowers being used to clear snow. Like the story? We’d love to have you join us as a member to put even more great stories in the world! We were excited to be mentioned recently alongside De Correspondent, Voice of San Diego, and other innovative membership-based journalism initiatives.
• Global Edmonton’s Gord Steinke shared the story of his family connection to the Battle of Vimy Ridge. “Grandpa’s military records show he fought at most of the big battles, including The Battle of Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Hill 70 and the Somme.”
• Episode 63 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features Chris Chang-Yen Phillips, creator of Let’s Find Out, and Katrina Ingram, interim CEO of CKUA, who “discuss increasing local listenership”.
• The Edmonton Comedy Festival is looking for members of the media willing to participate in the annual media stand-up comedy challenge on October 12.
• AMPIA has announced the finalists for the 43rd annual Alberta Film & Television Awards, also known as the Rosies. Edmonton’s Moving Artistry Productions and Mosaic Entertainment each produced or co-produced 12 finalists. The winners will be announced at the Shaw Conference Centre here in Edmonton on April 29.
• Episode 41 of Matt Cundill’s The ‘Sound Off’ Podcast features Eric Samuels, who worked at 100.3 The Bear in the early 90s.
• Baseball is back, so Global Edmonton’s Kent Morrison has shared what baseball means to him.
• But before we get into baseball, there’s playoff hockey to be played! 92.5 Fresh FM shared a celebration video on Facebook where it has already been viewed more than 84,000 times.
• Thursday’s print edition of the Edmonton Journal featured an ad campaign that also appeared in other Postmedia papers across the country. “Times change, but the Journal’s dedication to Edmonton does not,” it reads in part. The inner flap took aim at fake news and alternative facts saying “investigative journalism is more important than ever”. I’m reminded of Clay Shirky’s 2009 essay Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable in which he wrote: “The newspaper people often note that newspapers benefit society as a whole. This is true, but irrelevant to the problem at hand; “You’re gonna miss us when we’re gone!” has never been much of a business model.”

• From Poynter: Can trust in the news be repaired? Facebook, Craig Newmark, Mozilla and others are spending $14 million to try
• A new 25,000+ word report called The Platform Press: How Silicon Valley reengineered journalism looks at how social platforms and technology companies are “having a greater effect on American journalism than even the shift from print to digital.”
• I have such mixed feelings about Twitter lately. Is it really being unbundled before our eyes? The latest is that they are trying to sign deals “with pay-TV companies that would let subscribers watch live channels over the social network.”

• CANADALAND has now picked up the story about Venture Publishing’s trouble paying freelancers. Apparently the situation is even worse than that though, with frozen accounts, the loss of health benefits, and an erratic publishing schedule all being alleged. Omar Mouallem shared his thoughts on Facebook, writing “VP was a major pilar of Alberta’s already small media industry and it’s clearly in the dust.”
• John Baker, former Managing Editor and Producer at CBC Edmonton, has passed away. “Wonderful man, journalist & friend” tweeted Janice Johnston. “A solid journalist, great boss and incredible family man” tweeted Matt McClure.
• Nominations for the 68th National Newspaper Awards are out. The Edmonton Journal and Metro Edmonton were both nominated for their coverage of the Fort McMurray wildfire. The winners will be announced in Toronto on May 5.
• The Journal’s Larry Wong has received a CAJ nomination for his 2016 portfolio. It’s his 7th nomination!
• Episode 62 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features Trisha Estabrooks and Alex Zabjek, the two women behind the new podcast The Broadcast, a show about women and politics in Alberta.

• Postmedia issued layoff notices for 54 people (including 29 journalists) at the Vancouver Sun and the Province on Friday, prompting care packages from journalists across Canada. The layoffs come on the heels of 38 additional buyouts at the two papers in January.
• Rogers and Bell are planning to charge bars and restaurants more for the right to show Sportsnet and TSN. “Restaurant Canada says it is fielding questions from bar and restaurant owners and is trying to take action on behalf of its 30,000 members.”
• From Cartt.ca: “On the first day of the CRTC’s hearing into new licences for Aboriginal radio stations in several large Canadian markets, it heard there are a number of ways urban Indigenous people can be served.”
• Subway has filed a lawsuit seeking $210 million in damages against the CBC after a Marketplace report aired that alleged 50% of the chicken used in Subway sandwiches is actually soy.
• Lucky Peach has confirmed it is folding. After the May issue there will be just one more issue published, “a crazy double issue in the fall”.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Sandy VanRiper reminds us that EJ School is coming to an end this month. “After 5 years, 31 classes and amazing teachers and almost 800 students, it has been a wonderful experience of week-long, site-based inquiry,” she wrote back in January.
• Edmonton did well at the Canadian Screen Awards! CTV Edmonton’s Daryl McIntyre was recognized as Best Local News Anchor, while Global Edmonton won a Best News Special award for its coverage of the Fort McMurray wildfires.
• The latest radio ratings for Edmonton are out and the top three remain unchanged: 630 CHED, 102.3 Now! FM, and CISN Country 103.9 FM.
• Breanna Karstens-Smith shared on Instagram that this her last week at CTV Edmonton as she is moving to Vancouver at the end of the month. “I started at CTV Edmonton in 2012 and was immediately embraced by some amazing journalists I had grown up watching,” she wrote. “I will miss the city and people but I know I’ll be back.”
• Also leaving Edmonton for B.C. is up! 99.3 FM’s Charlee Morgan. “It’s time to go home to BC while I’m still young enough and my family is still around,” she shared.
• Trent Wilkie is the new Online Editor for Vue Weekly. Congrats!
• Alberta Views has finally redesigned its website! The new look and feel is a big improvement, and you can actually read articles online now. For instance, here is the March edition’s feature on Alberta’s big-city newspapers by Ian Gill.
• Reason #19 of Emil’s 101 Reasons Why I Heart Edmonton is the local online community. “I started blogging about Edmonton back in July 2009, and there has been nothing but positive feedback and unsolicited support, and that’s carried on to my Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram too,” he wrote.
• The finalists for the 2017 RTDNA Canada Awards for the Prairie Region have been announced. CBC Edmonton earned 13 nominations, Global Edmonton earned 8 nominations, and CTV Edmonton earned 5 nominations.
• The Montreal Sauce podcast recently featured Jeff Samsonow. “He’s been a journalist, producer, writer, product strategist, content director and more,” hosts Paul and Christopher wrote. “Thus, we gave him the title, Media Mogul.”
• Elise Stolte is very active on Facebook and last week she shared some detail about what she calls her “crowd-sourced editorial board”.

• Cam Tait wrote about last week’s roast of Rob Christie. “Roasts are meant to be in good fun,” he wrote. “Yet, perhaps there is an increasing need to point out the positives people have.”
• Postmedia is looking for a Multimedia Journalist to join the team out in Spruce Grove. They’ve also got a number of summer internships open for multimedia reporters at a variety of locations in the Edmonton region.
• The brand new Edmonton Screen Industries Office now has its nine-person board and is expected to be up and running in the next few weeks.

• After 51 years with the Associated Press, Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Nick Ut is retiring. He’s no doubt best known for his “stunning black-and-white image from the Vietnam War that’s come to be known simply as ‘Napalm Girl’.”
• The Guardian now has more than 185,000 subscribers and has received more than 160,000 one-off contributions from people around the world.
• Jim Rutenberg says we’re living in an era of choose-your-own-adventure news.
• The Washington Post has signed an agreement to license its digital publishing platform Arc to Tronc, which counts the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribute on its roster of papers.

• February 28 was Ken Regan’s final day at CKUA. He’s retiring after 18 years leading the organization as CEO. Check the post for a great collection of memories from his time at CKUA.
• Marty Forbes has the latest on local media community efforts. He also caught up with Ken Regan and asked him what’s next: “Honestly, a short break just to breathe a bit and then I’ll be looking for a new adventure and opportunity to make a contribution to something I can be passionate about – hopefully in the realm of arts and culture.”
• The Edmonton Community Foundation is collaborating with LitFest and Eighteen Bridges magazine on an anthology and salon series to mark Canada’s sesquicentennial. The project will feature 12 writers including Paula Simons, Anna Marie Sewell, Lynn Coady, and well-known Edmontonians.
• WHERE Magazine editor Matthew Stepanic was on Global Edmonton recently to discuss the new issue.
• Episode 61 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features “Lauren Dary, an Edmonton photographer and one-half of the team behind That’s So Maven, a podcast by, for and about female entrepreneurs.”
• Capital Ideas says that podcasts “are a growing source of information and inspiration for many business owners” and is asking for suggestions on podcasts that help you become a better entrepreneur.
• Metro Edmonton is looking for freelancers for April.
• More bad press for the Edmonton Catholic School Board: Catholic school chair censures trustee for speaking to media over contract vote.
• The Rotary Roast of Rob Christie takes place at the River Cree Resort on Wednesday evening. The event will be emceed by Bruce Bowie and Sean Burke.
• The iMEDIA Social Media Conference takes place on Friday and Saturday this week at the Robbins Health Learning Centre.

• Radioplayer Canada is a new app that features more than 400 Canadian radio stations. You can learn more in this article. The app is a partnership between CBC, Corus, Harvard Broadcasting, NewCap, Rogers, and a dozen or so other companies. The only one missing is Bell Media.
• Steven Spielberg will direct a new movie called The Post featuring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep centered on the Washington Post’s publication of the 1971 Pentagon Papers.
• From the New York Times Magazine: Why the Internet Didn’t Kill Zines.
• BioWare’s Aaryn Flynn is calling on the provincial government to provide a tax credit to keep talented game developers here in Alberta.
  The New York Times is revamping its A2 and A3 pages and will start to use the space to highlight some of their reporters’ activity on Twitter.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Venture Publishing Inc. is once again in the news for its failure to pay freelancers in a timely manner, if at all. “Venture Publishing currently owes tens of thousands of dollars to these freelancers, and has failed to make good on constant promises to pay them for their work,” wrote Story Board. They previously wrote about this back in 2013. CBC picked up the story this week and interviewed CEO Ruth Kelly who said “Venture is in exactly in the same situation with many of our clients, where we have had extremely slow or absolutely no payment, complete default.” Apparently there are at least 13 freelancers waiting for outstanding payments totalling nearly $40,000.
• 91.7 The Bounce has rebranded and is now KiSS 91.7. Sounds like the format is more or less the same, but the station will now feature 91 minute commercial free playlists at noon, 3pm, and 9pm. They celebrated the rebrand with 91 hours of commercial free music.
• Wednesday is Tim Querengesser’s last day as managing editor of Metro Edmonton. “I’m leaving the magazining and newspapering industry,” he wrote, adding “I’m not ready to leave it.”
• Marty Forbes at @MediaInYeg reports that John Cummings, who worked in Edmonton at CJCA and CHQT in the 1980s, has passed away.
• Here’s a feature on why journalists must consider what to include in their stories from Jeff Samsonow. “Otherwise it could be twisted into misinformation and hateful rhetoric,” he wrote. Jeff spoke about the topic on The Ryan Jespersen Show on Wednesday.
• The roast of 96.3 Capital FM’s Rob Christie is coming up on March 8. Here’s a feature on Rob from Nick Lees.
• The Book Publisher’s Association of Alberta is asking the provincial government to include a $15 million fund for publishing houses in its next budget. According to executive director Kieran Leblanc, there are now just 28 publishers in Alberta, down from 45 in the mid 90s.
• Vue Weekly is seeking freelancers and is inviting story pitches to be sent to new editor Lee Butler.
• The Edmonton Heritage Council has sponsored a feature-length animated 3D film focused on Edmonton’s City Beautiful Movement. You can see it March 3 and 4 at the Capitol Theatre at Fort Edmonton.
• CISN Country 103.9 was featured in a recent episode of Everything Edmonton with Seanna Collins.

• The latest issue of WIRED includes a feature on how the New York Times is clawing its way into the future.
• Bell Media is juggling its executives as it lost president Mary Ann Turcke to the NFL Network.
• Donald Trump’s war on the media escalated Friday when a group of media organizations including the New York Times, CNN, and others were barred from attending the White House’s daily press briefing.
• Mozilla has acquired Pocket, which is the service I use for saving and reading articles and other links. They have said Pocket will continue to operate as an independent subsidiary.
• From the Wall Street Journal: “YouTube viewers world-wide are now watching more than 1 billion hours of videos a day, threatening to eclipse U.S. television viewership.” That’s a 10-fold increase over 2012.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• The finalists for the 2017 Alberta Magazines Awards have been announced. The event takes place in Calgary on March 16 and 17. Great to see so many Edmonton nominations, including 13 for Avenue Edmonton and 6 for The Yards!
• The Rotary Roast of 96.3 Capital FM’s Rob Christie is coming up on March 8 in support of the BGCBigs of Edmonton & Area. Cam Tait has the scoop on Rob’s career and the charity event.
• Congratulations to Ryan Jackson on being nominated for a News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) Multimedia of the Year award for a video he shot while still at the Edmonton Journal. You can see the video about former MMA champion Ryan Ford here.
• The iMEDIA Social Media Conference is coming up on March 10 and 11 here in Edmonton and they’ve continued rolling out new details. Calder Bateman’s digital strategist Linda Hoang is going to be emceeing.
• Mike Johnston (aka Mr. Kitchen Magpie) recently shared some tips for bloggers interested in hosting sponsored posts. “The rule of thumb is simple, always charge something for your work, even if the product itself is free.”
• Speaking of sponsored posts, Lyndsey of Over My Styled Body used a day in her life as a blogger as the premise for a product partnership.
• I had to miss it, but I gather last week’s panel on journalism (organized by the Peter Lougheed Leadership College) was a mix of pining for what once was and slowing turning attention to the future. As Karen tweeted, “the work is important and desired, it requires passion, and you might have to make your own job.”
• Episode 60 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features “a debate between Taylor Chadwick of What It Is against Andrea Beça of That’s So Maven on how long a podcast should be.” It’s a very Canadian debate!
• The next Edmonton Podcasting Meetup takes place on Saturday, February 25 at Variant Edition Comics & Culture. This edition will once again explore the theme of how to get started, but this time through the eyes of a fairly new podcast.
• Edmonton photographer Stephanie Simpson has started a new project called This Is Not a Passport Photo to provide family photo sessions to newly arrived Syrian refugees in Edmonton.
• Global Edmonton is looking for a Digital Journalist to join the team. The deadline to apply is February 24.
• Tanner Young Publishing, the company behind WHERE Edmonton and Canadian Cowboy Country, is looking for a Digital & Listings Editor. The deadline to apply is February 24.
• In case you missed it, Taproot Edmonton was featured in Editor & Publisher recently.

And here is some slightly less local media stuff:

• My social media feeds blew up last week as news spread that Stuart McLean, the host of CBC Radio’s The Vinyl Cafe, had died at age 68.
• CJR invited more than two dozen freelancers to dish on their experiences with publishers. They hope to make it an ongoing project.
• I’ve been a reader of the Local Matters newsletter for a couple months now and I really like it. I don’t read all the stories, but it’s a great overview of the important local watchdog journalism taking place throughout the US. Here’s the latest.
• From researchers Damian Radcliffe and Christopher Ali in NiemanLab: If small newspapers are going to survive, they’ll have to be more than passive observers to the news.
• Donald Trump has declared that the news media are “the enemy of the American people” but has had only praise for “the conspiracy-theorizing, flame-throwing nationalistic radio and internet star” that is Alex Jones of Infowars. As Jim Rutenberg notes, the site’s traffic is “above that of the fact-checking site Politifact.com.” Ugh.
