Here are my weekly Edmonton notes:
- The final Winter Light event takes place tonight from 8pm until 11pm in Churchill Square. Illuminations features fire and light projections, performances, story telling, and free hot chocolate! I’ll be there.
- Local municipalities finally approved a regional growth plan this week. You can learn more about the Capital Region Board here. Their website also contains PDF versions of their plans.
- CBC’s Dragon’s Den will be in Edmonton on March 25th seeking applicants for season four. You can head down to CBC in City Centre Mall from 11am until 7pm if you’d like to throw your hat in the ring.
- The Edmonton Police Service is looking to hire 220 new officers in 2009. They’ve sent recruiters to eastern Canada this month, and are offering signing bonuses and other perks. You can learn more at http://www.joineps.ca.
- The City will be holding a public forum on the City Centre Airport, and has launched an online discussion site. I don’t see where the discussions take place, however.
- Safe Harbour launched in Edmonton this week. It’s an anti-racism program that encourages organizations to train their staff to address racism in the workplace. Edmonton Public Libraries, Ten Thousand Villages, and the Pride Centre of Edmonton are the initial supports of the local program.
- Earth Hour 2009 is coming up on March 28th. The City launched its plans to celebrate this week, and will be hosting a Bullfrog-powered event at City Hall that evening.
- Here’s something I wrote about at Techvibes this week – five local business incubators have joined forces to pool resources an in effort to better serve entrepreneurs.
- Our baseball team has a new name – the Edmonton Capitals.
- This one is a long way out still, but I learned this week that the ETS Community Conference is being replaced this year by a Community Fair, taking place on April 25th.
- On March 24th, the Edmonton Public Library will open its 17th branch inside the Cameron Library at the University of Alberta. The new library will be called eplGO, and will primarily serve the University of Alberta community. The official opening will be at 10am.

I like the name Edmonton Capitals. It’s not flashy but it’s much better than the Cracker Cats.
The baseball team has been renamed? Good. Cracker Cats was a terrible name that almost no one understood. Catalytic crackers? What a ridiculous thing to name a team after.
Edmonton Capitals is a good name. Like Alain said, it’s not flashy, but it’s a huge improvement over the Cracker Cats. Now if the quality of play improves, too, I might actually start going to games again.
