Here is my latest update on local media stuff:
The Sun News Network launches on television today across the country. Charles Adler will be hosting a talk show on the new channel – check out an interview he did with Marty Forbes in the Edmonton Sun. Check out the official site here for more. It shows up on channel 177 on Shaw for me.
- Thursday evening will be Lynda Steele’s last appearance on Global News. She was planning to leave this summer, to move with her husband to Vancouver. Lynda is now set to take over as CTV BC’s consumer reporter, with the popular On Your Side segment being rebranded Steele On Your Side. Lynda has shared the anchor desk here in Edmonton with Gord Steinke for 16 years, and will start her new job on May 16. All the best Lynda!
- The Bounce has a new website which features real-time content, the ability to listen online, and “robust multimedia galleries”, among other things. Rogers acquired the station last June.
- Hey look, I’m not the only one who thought there was a lot of Twitchell coverage! MacEwan University criminologist Bill Pitt says “the media has really blown this one.”
- I’d like to think that my entry on title junk had something to do with this: iNews880’s website now features appropriate page titles!
- The deadline to apply for Global Edmonton’s Ground Force is April 30. They’re looking for 12 individuals.
- Social Media Breakfast Edmonton #5 is taking place on April 29, once again at the CBC Community Space in City Centre. The event kicks off at 8:30am and features Jennifer Banks.
- The CRTC is conducting a public consultation on the issue of loud television commercials. Today is the deadline for comments.
- Well look at that, Graham Hicks is back! He’s writing about food now, with his first article being a review of Pampa Brazilian Steakhouse. He’s hosting The Art of Conversation LVI there on Tuesday, April 26.
- Global Edmonton’s Mike Sobel is in hot water over an offensive comment he made on air during The Morning News last week. You can see the video clip here, and read the official apology here.
- Coming up on May 5 – a walk-about tour of CTV! Go behind the scenes during the live Noon Show.
- SEE Magazine’s Best of Edmonton 2011 is now open for voting until midnight on April 28. Local media are nominated in the Best Local News Program, Best Local Celebrity, Sexiest Local Celebrity, Best Local Radio Station, Best Local Radio Personality, and Best Local Blog categories. You can see last year’s results here.
- According to the latest Edmonton Journal newsletter, the Journal’s website has nearly double the amount of traffic as the next media site (PDF). Meanwhile, it appears traffic to the Edmonton Sun’s website has nosedived. CTV and Global are both making minor strides. The data comes from comScore.
- The same newsletter includes the latest NADbank data, which shows that 513,200 people read the Journal every week (includes both paper and online).
- Intercamp, the student newspaper at Grant MacEwan University, is no more. It has been renamed The Griff, and will launch in September to coincide with MacEwan’s 40th anniversary.

So, what have I missed? What’s new and interesting in the world of Edmonton media? Let me know!
UPDATE: The Edmonton Sun tweeted tonight about their new site redesign. It looks kind of like Flipboard, on a web page. Definitely not your typical newspaper website! Check it out, and then let them know what you think.
Thanks for the blog shout out, Boss.

I was hoping the Ground Force was going to be some sort of ninja thing. Sadly, it is not.
Apparently in the re-design of edmontonsun.com, they broke all their links. Even their Google Custom Search links to pages that just forward to the category homepage when you go to them.

Biggest Sexist TV Station ever: CTV Edmonton – there has never been a female supervisor in Production or the Newsroom ever! How old is this station? Getting close to 60 years! Pretty sad!
