Here is my latest update on local media stuff:
- CTV Edmonton has announced that CTV Morning Live will debut on October 17. The new show will air weekday mornings from 5:30am until 9:00am, and features Rob Williams, Dez Melenka, Craig Larkins, and Melissa Dominelli.
- CBC announced “significant new initiatives” across the country today. In Edmonton, new weekend news programming will be introduced next year.
- Thanks to a national reorganization, Omni Television has closed its Edmonton studio as of September 15. Six employees were laid off, six are moving to Rogers Media in Toronto, and most the rest will shift to Citytv Edmonton.
- Sandra Sperounes reports that Arlo Maverick is signing off after 11 years as the host of CJSR’s The Urban Hang Suite. She also notes that Aaron Levin, another former CJSR alumnus and founder of weirdcanada.com, is heading east to Toronto.
- Here is Karen’s latest Edmonton New Media Roundup. She has a great update on West Edmonton Local, now that her class has taken over the site. Looking forward to its continued evolution!
- Jeff Samsonow is now blogging here, and I have to say he looked pretty good on Alberta Primetime’s This Week panel too.
- There are a number of interesting career opportunities listed at the CPRS Edmonton site, including a number of communications positions at the City of Edmonton.
- Not to be outdone by Global, the Edmonton Journal is hosting a PC Leadership Debate of its own, on September 27 (tomorrow).
- Interesting thread on Hot 107, which claims it is now “selected as a favourite by more 18-44 year-old adults than any other radio station” in Edmonton. As is pointed out in the thread, President & GM John Yerxa has opted out of participating in the PPMs that all other radio stations take part in, so the results are based on their own Leger survey.
- Hans Dys is the featured speaker at the Fall Luncheon of the Edmonton Broadcasters Club, taking place on October 19. He will focus on the Edmonton broadcasting enterprises of the late Dr. Charles Allard.
- I’m not sure when he started doing these, but I think Josh Classen’s WeatherBlast videos are smart. Here’s the update from today:
- CIRA, the organization responsible for looking after .ca, is considering implementing French characters in domains.
- Digital Alberta is launching a new website and new programs tomorrow at D’Lish.
- I really liked this “infographic” on EIA in the Edmonton Sun:
- Here is the Edmonton Journal’s Community Advisory Board. I’m in such great company! At our first meeting last week, Postmedia’s Director of Social Media Alex Blonski showed us The Bridge, the forthcoming community news site:
- Planning is well underway for MediaCamp Edmonton 2, but we need your input. Fill out our online survey to help us determine what the day should look like. Thanks in advance, and save the date – January 28, 2012!
- mesh west is making a stop in Edmonton next Tuesday, October 4. I’m on a panel about open data, and am looking forward to the other sessions as well. See you there!

Don’t forget about Jay n’ J. We released our episode with Jeff Samsonow and Edmonton International Film Festival Producer Kerrie Long yesterday – http://jaynj.tumblr.com/post/10690756458/moneyball-w-jeff
Great roundup Mack, look forward to it every week.
Thanks for reading, keep up the great work with the podcast!
Thanks for the plug(s)!
Question on The Bridge (if it’s known yet): Is that going to be a place where anyone can submit stories or is it an online place for the Journal’s hyper-local stories?
The former – a place for anyone to contribute stories, photos, videos, and more. I suspect it’ll also serve as a collection point for Journal articles that use that content.
