It has been a few weeks since my last update, so there’s a few older items in this week’s entry. Here is my latest update on local media stuff:
- Today marked the start of CTV Morning Live here in Edmonton. It airs weekday mornings from 5:30am until 9:00am. Did you watch this morning? There’s a thread on C2E about it.
- Speaking of CTV Edmonton, you may have noticed that they have a new set! And unlike Global’s, it is not at all green.
- The Edmonton Journal has launched The Bridge, a new community newsroom section of the website where readers can share information. Every day there will be new assignments, and you can submit both content and ideas. There’s lots of work to be done yet – “it’s very much a work in progress, but we are eager to get started.” We’ll see how it goes, but I was hoping for something more akin to The Guardian’s Newslist.
- The Edmonton Sun’s Christmas Charity Auction kicks off at 9:00am tomorrow.
- CJSR’s annual FunDrive runs from October 26 through November 5. There’s a FunDrive concert taking place at Wunderbar on November 3. Here’s a great piece on “the Weirdest Radio Station in Edmonton” by Mike Ross.
- Well that didn’t take long – YegNews has ceased production. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s easy to produce quality content on a regular basis. I hope Alain and the others behind it move on to bigger and better things!
- Here is Karen’s latest Edmonton New Media Roundup. Among other gems, she points out Journal sports columnist John MacKinnon’s extremely rude comment on Zoe Todd’s post about the arena issue.
- Also: check out Karen’s post on the Journal’s Media Lab.
- I love it when people catch stuff like this. On October15, an article in the Edmonton Journal referred to Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as “the brat pack”. Kind of like how this article in the Edmonton Journal back on September 30, 2007 referred to Andrew Cogliano, Sam Gagner, and Robert Nilsson as “the brat pack”. I think Scott Lepp said it best: “I look forward to the 2014 version.”
- Sharon and I were talking about this the other day while watching the Oilers on TV – “Dear CBC, it is time you updated your Edmonton footage.”
- A reminder that the Citizen Journalism Workshop for Writers is taking place on Saturday.
- Another upcoming event to be aware of: WordCamp Edmonton is happening on November 18 and 19. Tickets are just $40. “WordCamp is a gathering of all things WordPress…”
- If you have watched any Oilers games this year, you’ll know that Oil Change is back. The documentary series, produced by Aquila Productions, airs on both Citytv and Sportsnet.
- On October 5, the Lieutenant Governor’s Circle on Mental Health and Addiction was introduced. Among those in the Circle is longtime Edmonton Journal columnist Scott McKeen.
- Some sad news earlier this month – Bobby Ng, a local radio personality best known as drive-home host on CHQT, died after a battle with cancer. You can read more about Ng and his career on the Edmonton Broadcasters’ Colleagues Remembered page.
- Check out Mark Iocchelli’s new photo blog, featuring beautiful shots of Edmonton!
- Telus is among Microsoft’s launch partners for the roll out of TV on Xbox LIVE (they already had support for the Xbox 360). Will be interesting to see the evolution of that service.
- Looks like Adam McKale is more than just a radio guy – he’s now the Stella Artois Prairies Draughtmaster as well!
- After a relatively short stint at Global Edmonton, Christina Salvo has moved on to KABC in Los Angeles. MediaMag has a good roundup of other local media moves.
- According to the latest Edmonton Journal monthly newsletter, they reach 54% of the market. I wonder who they mean by this: “Edmonton’s other local daily paid newspaper…” #sarcasm
- We have moved the date for MediaCamp Edmonton 2 slightly – it will now take place on February 4.
- I think Sharon and I were the only new media types at The Harvest Room tonight for the Media Partners dinner to re-launch The Harvest Room. I wonder how many of these media dinners happen throughout the year? And if the restaurants actually get any value from them?

So, what have I missed? What’s new and interesting in the world of Edmonton media? Let me know!
Wow. You’ve turned into an asshole.
