Here is my latest update on local media stuff:
- RTDNA Canada announced the winners of its National and Network Awards last week in Toronto. Congratulations to Global Edmonton, named Best Newscast (Large Market), and CBC Edmonton, which won five awards.
- The Edmonton Sun got into trouble recently for a very poor headline. They spent most of the morning issuing apologies on Twitter.
- Also in trouble was Dean Blundell, an Albertan and talk show host in Toronto, who made some offensive comments about now-deceased Oilers prospect Kristians Pelss.
- No surprise here, but storms have dominated the online chatter for a few weeks. First there was the tornado warning, and of course most recently it has been the flooding.
- Congratulations to Tanara McLean on one year with BT Edmonton!
- Via Marty Forbes: the summer edition of Edmontonians magazine includes a tribute to John Berry.
- Don’t miss the latest episode of The Unknown Studio – they interviewed Emerson Csorba and Breanna Mroczek from The Wanderer.
- And while you’re checking out podcasts, don’t miss Jay Runham’s latest. He interviewed NOW! 102.3 FM’s Adam McKale.
- Randy Lemay, Newcap’s Director of Alberta Operations, has resigned for health reasons. I wish him all the best.
- A total of $92,000 has been raised for the Easter Seals at the Kevin Karius charity golf tournament. Nice work!
- Apparently Fresh FM has hired Paul O’Neil away from Red Deer’s Big 105.
- Venture Publishing is looking for a new editor for Alberta Oil magazine. The job posting states that the successful candidate “will also play an important role in Venture Radio, our new online radio initiative which will be rolled out in fall of 2013.”
- Was it social media that forced AHS to back away from plans to privatize home care at three local co-ops?
- Unfortunately their film didn’t win the CineCoup Film Accelerator contest, but it sounds like we have some talented young filmmakers here in Edmonton!
- Heads up: the Government of Alberta is undertaking a review of the FOIP Act. Tomorrow from 10:30am until noon is the Edmonton Media Stakeholder Session, and at 6pm is the Edmonton Public Meeting.

Thanks for the shout out Mack! Much appreciated.
It’s belated, but thanks for the mention, Mack!
