Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:
- Global Edmonton’s John Sexsmith is speaking out about his Stage 4 prostate cancer diagnosis to encourage others to get screened. John was diagnosed in August 2012 and has been battling the disease ever since. “My advice? Make regular doctor appointments and pay very close attention to your physical and mental health,” he says.
- Beginning November 14, Charles Adler will host a new show called Charles Adler Tonight on Corus radio stations including 630 CHED here in Edmonton. Here’s the news release.
- CJSR raised more than $105,000 in this year’s FunDrive!
- TSN’s live microphones have caused quite a bit of trouble for Jason Maas and the Edmonton Eskimos. They were fined for not wearing the mics during their game against Montreal.
- Linda Hoang and Tyler Jack Butler have started a new podcast about social media strategy called Don’t Call Me a Guru. You can check out the first episode here.
- Here’s a review of Avenue Edmonton editor Steven Sandor’s new book Trolled.
- Nicole of the blog Dutchie Love shares the story of why she quit blogging and why she’s back again.
- Episode 53 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features a conversation on how to start a podcast recorded at the Edmonton Podcasting Meetup. The next event is scheduled for November 19.
- CBC Edmonton is looking for a Senior Producer for TV news.
- Sturgeon County is looking for a Communications Coordinator (Digital Media). The deadline to apply is November 18.
- This has to be one of the funniest local corrections I’ve come across. The story is “City of Edmonton wins fight at Supreme Court”. The correction says “An earlier version of this story incorrectly said the City of Edmonton had lost its appeal at the Supreme Court.”

And here is some slightly less local media stuff:
- Happy 80th birthday to CBC!
- I’ve seen a quite a few mentions of the difference between the Chicago Sun-Times’ and Chicago Tribune’s photographs marking the Cubs’ World Series victory.
- From Politico: How Trump Took Over the Media By Fighting It.
- The election south of the border has been so ridiculous and at times so unbelievable that even The Onion has struggled to satirize it. Jim Rutenberg argues in the Times that journalism’s biggest challenge post-election will be combatting the rise of fake news. You know, after they get the business model thing figured out!
- The White House has unveiled its plan to preserve and pass on the digital history of the Obama administration. Great to see this!
- ProPublica is the new parent of Politwoops, a service that preserves politicians’ deleted tweets for posterity. I’m glad to see the service will live on!
