Media-related updates from elsewhere

Here are some non-local media links that I found interesting this week:

  • Podcast platform RadioPublic has proposed a new system called PodPass that would help to deliver premium podcast content in any enabled app. "If it can gather enough momentum, it’s still a very long road for the idea to go from proposal to wide implementation," writes Hot Pod.
  • In a note to staff, New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger said a coordinated campaign by President Trump’s allies to attack hundreds of journalists in retaliation for coverage of the administration "represents an escalation of an ongoing campaign against the free press" and that "their goal is to silence critics and undermine the public’s faith in independent journalism."
  • The Membership Puzzle Project has shared an article on how smart investments in paid lead acquisition can help grow membership.
  • Apparently The Economist has more than double the amount of web traffic it receives via newsletters over the past year. Here’s more on how they grow revenue by experimenting with the digital experience.
  • If elected president next year, Bernie Sanders says he would "reverse the Trump administration’s attempts to make corporate media mergers even more likely in the future" and would "start requiring major media corporations to disclose whether or not their corporate transactions and merger proposals will involve significant journalism layoffs."

Media Monday Edmonton: Update #356

Taproot Edmonton’s latest Media Roundup was published today. Sign up here to get it delivered to your inbox every Monday morning.

Local updates from the Media Roundup

Here are a few select updates from today’s Media Roundup, written and curated by Linda Hoang:

  • The Edmonton Journal issued an apology after receiving criticism for publishing an editorial cartoon on Aug. 1 depicting a person bearing “resemblance to anti-Semitic tropes prevalent in some anti-Jewish propaganda.”
  • The Edmonton Journal is hiring a new editor-in-chief as Mark Iype has been seconded to Postmedia Special Projects.
  • Sarah O’Donnell is leaving her role as assistant managing editor of the Edmonton Journal. While she hasn’t yet publicly confirmed where she’s headed next, her new Twitter bio says she’s “in the process of moving from ink to the airwaves.” O’Donnell was a guest on the latest Press Gallery episode reflecting on starting the podcast. She talks about how the podcast has grown, and says she started it as a way to “demystify the process of political reporting.”
  • Former CKUA station manager, host, sports announcer and program manager Jack, a.k.a. John Worthington, passed away at age 92. The beloved broadcaster worked at CKUA for over 70 years.
  • APTN says the broadcaster will pursue criminal charges if there is further aggressive behaviour towards its female reporters, after two separate incidents last month.
