Media Monday Edmonton: Update #356

Taproot Edmonton’s latest Media Roundup was published today. Sign up here to get it delivered to your inbox every Monday morning.

Local updates from the Media Roundup

Here are a few select updates from today’s Media Roundup, written and curated by Linda Hoang:

  • The Edmonton Journal issued an apology after receiving criticism for publishing an editorial cartoon on Aug. 1 depicting a person bearing “resemblance to anti-Semitic tropes prevalent in some anti-Jewish propaganda.”
  • The Edmonton Journal is hiring a new editor-in-chief as Mark Iype has been seconded to Postmedia Special Projects.
  • Sarah O’Donnell is leaving her role as assistant managing editor of the Edmonton Journal. While she hasn’t yet publicly confirmed where she’s headed next, her new Twitter bio says she’s “in the process of moving from ink to the airwaves.” O’Donnell was a guest on the latest Press Gallery episode reflecting on starting the podcast. She talks about how the podcast has grown, and says she started it as a way to “demystify the process of political reporting.”
  • Former CKUA station manager, host, sports announcer and program manager Jack, a.k.a. John Worthington, passed away at age 92. The beloved broadcaster worked at CKUA for over 70 years.
  • APTN says the broadcaster will pursue criminal charges if there is further aggressive behaviour towards its female reporters, after two separate incidents last month.
