• The Alberta Film & Television Awards, better known as the Rosies, were handed out on the weekend. Edmonton’s CTV Morning Live, Aquila Productions, Prairie Dog Film + Television, and Dirt City Films were among the winners. Congratulations to all, and especially to Stacey Brotzel who took home Best Television Host! Here’s a clip from CTV on their wins.
• Congratulations to the Edmonton Journal’s Sarah O’Donnell who won the Editorial category in the National Newspaper Awards. Here is the Postmedia write-up.
• Today was Warren Dean’s second last broadcast with CBC as he is moving back to Calgary and leaving the industry. I am hearing that Tanara McLean will be taking over. Best of luck Warren!
• The Edmonton Journal has launched a new arts podcast called Dirt City Limits which features Liz Nicholls, Fish Griwkowsky, Sandra Sperounes, and guests. You can listen on SoundCloud.
• The Dinner TV crew made it through their first week! Did you watch? What did you think? I hope they sort out posting the clips online soon. Also, looks like Jennifer Rollins will be a regular guest Tuesdays at 6:15pm.
• Cam Tait remembers Paul Rimstead, a columnist who came to Edmonton in 1978 to help the Sun get off the ground.
• Global Edmonton weekend News Hour producer Nikki Wiart is leaving to go back to school. Best of luck!
• Venture Publishing is once again looking for an Assistant Editor for Alberta Venture magazine.
• The deadline to apply for the Edmonton Examiner’s student reporter internship is Thursday.
• The deadline to apply for the St. Albert Gazette’s City Hall Reporter position is Friday.
• Here is Karen’s latest roundup of local blog posts! She notes the launch of a new podcast on comics and pop culture called Yegs & Bacon. Love it!
• I suppose I should mention that Kaitlyn Bristowe, originally from Leduc, was named The Bachelorette after more guys voted for her during last week’s episode than Britt Nilsson.
• Remember Kevin Crull, the former president of Bell Media who resigned because he tried to influence CTV’s coverage of the CRTC? Well he found a new job, as chief marketing officer for Sprint.
• We’re less than two weeks from the kickoff match here in Edmonton for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 and TSN has now launched its online hub for complete coverage.
• Facebook has launched an Amber Alert delivery system here in Canada in partnership with police authorities across the country. They’ve had a similar system in the US since January.
• Apparently Twitter has been in talks to acquire Flipboard at a valuation north of $1 billion.
• That’s nothing compared to the $55 billion that Charter Communications is said to be buying Time Warner Cable for. They previously tried to make the acquisition early last year.
• And another story that could shakeup the media world in a big way: Sumner Redstone is 91 and “clearly ailing” and that leaves the future of Viacom and CBS in doubt.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Eric Neville has died at the age of 76 from a sudden heart attack. Known as Klondike Eric, he was the host of children’s show Popcorn Playhouse which aired every weekday afternoon on CFRN TV. “He was an unstoppable force of positive energy, happiness, and humour,” his daughter wrote on Facebook. Cam Tait wrote about Eric’s impact in his latest column.
• Dinner Television premieres tomorrow night on CityTV at 5pm. Here’s the promo video:

• And here’s one of the promo photos. Remember each show will be rebroadcast the following morning from 7-9am.
• You’ve probably heard about CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt turning the tables on hooligans yelling FHRITP which means you’ve probably heard about how common it is. Many CBC Edmonton reporters have had to deal with the harassment.
• Congratulations to the Journal’s Larry Wong, Ed Kaiser, and the team led by Ryan Jackson who worked on the video about suicide on the High Level Bridge on your recognition from the News Photographers Association of Canada.
• Stony Plain & Spruce Grove’s new 88.1 The ONE FM started transmitter testing on Tuesday. Puget Sound Radio says the station is expected to launch on June 4 with a country format.
• Cam Tait wrote a thoughtful piece on reporting news in a plugged in world. He asks, “how can we best combine telling compelling stories with today’s citizen journalism landscape?”
• The Ryan Jespersen Show is now available as a podcast on iTunes, broken into one hour chunks.
• MacEwan’s Public Relations program accepted its first cohort of students in 1995, which means the program is celebrating 20 years this year. Asked what has changed in the past 20 years, faculty member Colin Babiuk replied, “everything.”
• Pro Hockey Day 2015 took place on Saturday at the River Cree, in support of the Edmonton Inner City Children’s Program and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. CTV Edmonton’s Josh Classen was among those who laced up:

• Glass Buffalo, a literary magazine that showcases creative writing from University of Alberta students, is hosting a poetry writing contest. The deadline to enter is July 31.
• Marker Magazine is looking for editorial interns to fill various positions. The deadline for fall interns to apply is July 10.
• Cindy has a recap of the 2nd annual food blogger dinner at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald.
• I have mentioned Elizabeth Withey’s Frock Around the Clock project before, but here’s an updated profile by CBC Edmonton. She’s four months into the year-long fashion challenge!
• The Edmonton Examiner is looking for a full-time summer intern to join the team. The deadline to apply is May 28.
• The St. Albert Gazette is looking for a new city hall reporter. The deadline to apply is May 29.
• Here are Linda’s latest social media notes.
• As Linda mentioned, Facebook has launched Instant Articles, a new partnership with some very well-known publications, like the New York Times and the Atlantic.
• It sounds like the first year of Hockey Night in Canada under Rogers has not gone so well.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• On Thursday, Rogers Media Inc. cut 110 jobs from its broadcast television operations bringing Breakfast Television here in Edmonton to an end as well as ending all OMNI newscasts. Former BT Edmonton host Ryan Jespersen was among the first to tweet the news, and I have heard that nearly two dozen people were let go here in town. BT Edmonton will be replaced with a new show called Dinner Television, which will air from 5pm to 7pm and will be replayed the following morning from 7am to 9am. The new show will feature Bridget Ryan and Courtney Theriault from BT Edmonton, along with Jason Strudwick. You can follow Dinner TV on Twitter and watch for the debut episode on May 19.
• Gig City notes that newcomer Claire Hanna will also be joining the cast of Dinner TV.
• There was an outpouring of support for BT Edmonton on Twitter after the news broke. It seems the show had really formed a connection with Edmontonians over the years. They were always pretty savvy at connecting with the social media community, largely thanks to the efforts of Ryan Jespersen. I really enjoyed kicking off Bloggers Week on BT Edmonton a few times.
• A report at BNN says that Asian Television Network could benefit from the shutting of OMNI and other changes to the TV landscape.

• Congratulations to all of the winners of the 2014 Yeggies! A special lifetime achievement award was handed out to Dave Cournoyer who has been writing his popular Daveberta.ca blog for ten years now.
• I joined YouTube on August 14, 2005, exactly six months after the site launched. Sandra Sperounes took a look back at some of the most popular YouTube videos to come out of Edmonton over the last ten years (like most of you, none of my videos have ever come close).
• You can find the neon sign that used to hang at Mike’s News Stand at the Neon Sign Museum on 104 Street. Lawrence Herzog wrote about the “Edmonton institution” that used to sell newspapers and magazines on Jasper Avenue.
• Here’s a profile of NOW! 102.3 FM host Mark Drelich. “Despite his late night timeslot, Mark admits that he’s happy where he is and with what he sees for his future in radio.”
• The winners of the 2015 Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards have been announced. Edmonton had 14 nominations and won 2: Garner Andrews won on air talent (major market) and 107 World FM won multicultural station.
• Today was the start of the Crosbie & Cross show on 95.7 CRUZ FM. You can check out some promos of Nicola Crosbie and Lochlin Cross here. Best of luck to you both!
• This sounds pretty cool: The Magnificent Malls of Edmonton, a zine produced by Vivek Shraya. It features “thirty Edmontonians sharing their funniest, saddest, most treasured, or most symbolic mall memory.” It launched on Sunday at the Capilano Public Library. You can learn more about the project here.
• We’re less than a month away from the kickoff of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup taking place right here in Edmonton. You can find the CTV, TSN, and RDS broadcast schedule here.
• Here’s Edmonton Journal photographer Larry Wong talking about some of his best photos from 2014.
• Kick Point tracked the #abvote hashtag and wrote up the statistics. As expected, we used the hashtag a lot during this election!

• Maybe the paywall will never make its way to the Journal after all? Addressing the International News Media Association World Congress today, Julie Murtha from the Toronto Star said paywalls did not work for them and that promoting stories on the front page didn’t appear to affect readership.
• Postmedia has teamed up with SiriusXM Canada to launch National Post Radio. The radio show will be hosted by Matt Gurney.
• This should be interesting: Reddit is launching a video division to create original content.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Major election-related news today: Edmonton Journal editor-in-chief Margo Goodhand confirmed to CANADALAND that her paper was asked by Postmedia to make the endorsement of Jim Prentice and the PCs. You can read the endorsement here. I have not seen comment from the Calgary Herald, but presumably the same thing happened with their endorsement of Prentice. Also, both the Calgary Sun and Edmonton Sun endorsed Prentice, with the exact same editorial.
• I wrote about the topic of endorsements back in February 2014, and I argued at the time that newspapers should write endorsements but that they should be signed. “I don’t think political endorsements should carry the name of the news organization, but rather the name of the journalist(s) making the call,” is what I said. I still believe that. Had the endorsement of Jim Prentice been signed by Paul Godfrey, I think it would have been just fine.
• In other provincial news, a judge lifted the public ban today on the legal dispute between former justice minister Jonathan Denis and his estranged wife Breanna Palmer. Postmedia petitioned the court to lift the ban, as did lawyers representing Denis.
• And for something lighter, here’s what Alberta’s party leaders enjoy watching on TV.
• Oh and don’t miss the Journal’s campy promo video for their election night coverage.
• The Canadian Association of Journalists has announced the finalists for its annual awards for outstanding investigative journalism in Canada for 2014. Congratulations to Keith Gerein and Larry Wong from the Edmonton Journal and Charles Rusnell and Jennie Russell from CBC Edmonton on your nominations!
• The finalists for the 38th annual National Magazine Awards have also been announced. Congratulations to Avenue Edmonton on your nominations, including Best Magazine Cover!
• We’ve got our own little awards show happening here in Edmonton on Saturday – have you got your tickets for The Yeggies yet?
• Marty Forbes turned his Edmonton Sun column over to Allan Watt this week, who wrote about the upcoming Eskimos season and their seventh annual Edmonton Eskimos Women’s dinner, hosted by Global TV’s Margeaux Morin (who used to be a member of the cheer team).
• Shaw TV did a feature on Yegventures. Lincoln sure has an extensive library of content to draw from!

• Here’s a feature on The Onion: “How a fake newspaper is turning into a real media empire.”
• The Knight Foundation is awarding more than $700,000 to a new round of technology projects as part of the Knight Prototype Fund.
• From the New York Times’s Public Editor Margaret Sullivan: Everything I Know About Journalism in 395 Words. Lots of great stuff there, like this: “Be aggressive — a passive journalist isn’t really a journalist.”

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Congratulations to all of the local RTDNA Canada Award winners! They tweeted the winners yet somehow their website hasn’t been updated since 2013. Bob Layton won the Sam Ross award, CBC Edmonton won six awards including the large market best radio newscast, the Gord Sinclair award for live special events radio, and the Edward R. Morrow Award for investigative reporting for the third consecutive year, Global Edmonton won three awards including best newscast large market and creative use of video, and CTV Edmonton won two awards.
• There was a minor controversy last week as Metro Edmonton published a half-page ad from Edmonton-Centre candidate Greg Keating who “does not want the gay culture to be imposed and overlaid upon our beautiful and ancient cultures.” In response Metro publisher Steve Shrout issued a statement saying, “the statements made in this advertisement are highly offensive, target the gay community, and absolutely do not reflect the values, editorial viewpoints or policies of Metro.” He promised the paper is redoubling its efforts to ensure it doesn’t happen again and said “we are a newspaper of diversity and inclusiveness.”
• Congratulations to music writer Renato Pagnani on making his Rolling Stone debut. Watch for his review of the album Love Story by Yelawolf in the May 7 issue.
• Avenue Edmonton has launched a new website design! “Don’t be frightened,” they tweeted. “Change is good.” The new design is cleaner and responsive too.
• I love it when someone can poke fun at themselves. Here’s BT Edmonton’s Tanara McLean on pointing.
• It was great to see Dana DiTomaso and Dave Cournoyer join the Global Edmonton leaders debate liveblog (here’s the recap). Dave was also on the BT Edmonton Political panel last week – here is part 1 and part 2.
• In a recent blog post David Staples takes a Sportsnet columnist named Jeff Blair to task for proposing that the NHL should have rigged the draft lottery in Toronto’s favor.
• Fish Griwkowsky writes that there are “well over 100 Edmonton-based nominations” in this year’s Rosie Awards. Good luck to all! The awards gala takes place at the Shaw Conference Centre on May 23.
• If you can believe it, Daryl Katz has partnered with movie producer Joel Silver to create Silver Pictures Entertainment. Yes, the Oilers owner “has gone Hollywood.”
• Here’s an interview with Edmonton native Paul Graham, VP and Executive Producer at TSN, on how and why that network is televising 58 out of 64 games at this year’s IIHF World Championship.

• The April issue of The Pulp is now online.
• The latest edition of Postscript is all about the sensitive issue of covering sexual assault.
• As mentioned previously, Shaw Media has announced changes to the way it produces news at some Global stations. Edmonton is unaffected, and I learned recently that the Montreal newscasts “are being produced by feeding local stories into a central computer and having a local anchor on a virtual set communicate with a production team in Edmonton.”

• Buzzfeed is gearing up to launch a team here in Canada and it has hired Craig Silverman to lead the effort. Bloomberg reported back in March that Buzzfeed had already started a marketing team based in Toronto.

• CBC has officially eliminated another 241 positions across the country, bringing the total number of cuts over the last year to 1,400. A total of 18 people here in Edmonton received redundancy notices last week. Here’s the monologue that CBC Edmonton’s Tim Adams delivered on the cuts.
• CBC received quite a bit of criticism online for announcing the latest round of cuts on the same day it released a redacted report on former Q host Jian Ghomeshi’s questionable conduct.
• Here’s the latest media column from Marty Forbes. He covers the changes at CRUZ 95.7, the end of Jason Strudwick’s radio show on TSN 1260, and more.
• Marty Forbes also wrote about the 50th anniversary of CHQT Radio. Great history there, definitely worth a read!
• Paul Godfrey, Postmedia’ s President & CEO, will join other Postmedia executives for a town hall at the Edmonton Sun later this week. “It’s an exciting time for all of us as we become one of Canada’s largest newsmedia companies,” an internal memo said. “It’s a time to hear from our leaders, ask questions and celebrate together for the first time as a new company.”
• Today was “media day” for several of Alberta’s political leaders. Liberal Leader David Swann met with the editorial board of Metro News while NDP Leader Rachel Notley was a guest on CBC Radio.
• The Alberta election leaders’ debate will air on Global News on Thursday night. It’ll also be livestreamed online.
• Today was also Cam Tait’s roast at The Comic Strip in West Edmonton Mall, with proceeds from the event supporting Little Warriors.
• Congratulations to Alex Migdal on being named one of the recipients of the Edward Goff Penny Memorial Prize for his worth with the Guelph Mercury.
• It looks like Dan Tencer has started a podcast! Here’s the description of Episode #1: “Dan discusses his departure from 630 CHED, the beginning of the 2015 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, his disenfranchisement with the political process and more!”
• The Edmonton Journal’s popular Goosecam is up and running for another season. You can tune into see what Patience is up to here. “Hopefully, this season Patience and her offspring will face no harm, no fowl.”

• Edmonton Oiler fans may be thrilled that Connor McDavid will be playing here, but the NHL may not be and it’s all because of television ratings. Here in Edmonton, HOT 107 got in on the hype by handing out free “Connor McMuffins”.
• Alberta Business Research Ltd. which publishes Edmonton Senior News and Edmonton Woman Magazine is looking for an advertising sales consultant to join the sales team. The deadline to apply is April 21 so get on it!
• Is “glance journalism” really going to be a thing? Some, including the New York Times, say the Apple Watch will open up a new form of storytelling.
• I don’t think this is a very late April Fools joke: Norway will switch off FM radio starting in 2017, “allowing the country to complete its transition over to digital radio.”

• Alex Hindmarch has left 92.5 Fresh Radio here in Edmonton to join JACK FM in Calgary.
• Don’t forget the Salute to The Spin Doctor takes place on Thursday evening at Yellowhead Brewery.
• It sounds like the official book launch for Cam Tait’s new biography went very well at Audrey’s books over the weekend!

• It appears the CRTC is evaluating whether or not allow additional new commercial radio stations in Edmonton. The deadline to submit comments on the capacity of Edmonton to support new stations is May 11.

• With the provincial election well underway you’re going to hear a lot about public opinion polls. So it’s fair to ask, do they have value?
• Speaking of the election, Paula Simons wrote about the gag rule on government-employed experts and senior bureaucrats. No one is allowed to use provincial social media accounts during the election, and staff are only allowed to speak to the media with approval of their deputy minister.

• Anyone heard of North By South Radio before? I just noticed them on Twitter this week. They say they are “pop-up radio”.

• Heads up that Social Media Breakfast Edmonton #41 will take place on April 24 at Startup Edmonton.
• Shaw Media has announced that it will consolidate much of its production across Canada. In particular, “the production of some national and international segments will be centralized in Toronto.” Shaw says this will “[free] up resources in each market for local news gathering.” There are expected to be up to 30 layoffs across the country as a result.
• Former CBC meteorologist Claire Martin has announced she plans to see a Green Party nomination in North Vancouver in the upcoming federal election. She was a longtime weather presenter and meteorologist on Global Edmonton until she left in 2005.
• Corus Entertainment reported an $86.8 million net loss in Q2 and they’re hoping a focus on women will boost their numbers.
• Bell has announced that Kevin Crull has “departed” from his position as President of Bell Media. “The independence of Bell Media’s news operations is of paramount importance to our company and to all Canadians,” the statement reads.

• Nearly everyone expects Premier Jim Prentice to call a provincial election tomorrow (Tuesday) especially given word that a “major announcement” is coming at 10:30am and media were invited to travel on the “leader’s bus” to Grand Cache for photo opportunities.
• TELUS plans to invest $4.2 billion in new infrastructure and facilities across Alberta through 2018. The company says its networks now reach 99% of the province.
• Rolling Stone is in full-on crisis after it was forced to retract its November 2014 story “A Rape on Campus”. No one has been fired though, to the surprise and dismay of many.

• Twitter erupted yesterday when Vassy Kapelos (who now works for Global National in Ottawa) posted a screenshot of a text message conversation she had with Danielle Smith. After asking about ruling out public roles in the future, Smith replied “Piss off Vashy.” Smith later apologized. Clearly Smith was upset after having just lost her nomination race. And we all say things we regret from time to time. She probably should have just ignored Kapelos, and she should have at least spelled her name correctly! I don’t think Kapelos did anything unethical, but based on the reaction it’s obvious that for a lot of people posting a screenshot of a text message conversation feels wrong. More importantly to me, the exchanged added nothing of value to the story. Smith is human, of course she’s going to be upset. And yeah, I know she’s a public figure, but that feels like a pretty flimsy excuse to go after pageviews.
• One other thought on that – if Vassy Kapelos were to send you a text message now, would you reply?
• CBC announced last Thursday that it is cutting another 244 jobs over the next six months, and 37 of those are right here in Alberta. A total of 18 jobs will be cut in Edmonton but specifics won’t be known until April.
• CISN’s afternoon show is no more as they’ve let Clayton Bellamy go and Chelsea Bird is moving to 104.9 Virgin Radio where she’ll host the new morning show with Ian MacKinnon, who joins from SUN FM in Kelowna.
• Head over to Yellowhead Brewery on April 16 for Salute to The Spin Doctor, recognizing Daryl Hooke’s more than 40 years of service in broadcasting!

• The winners of the TELUS STORYHIVE competition will be announced on April 2. You can browse the top 29 finalists from Alberta and BC now. One winner from each province will receive $50,000 in grants and distribution through TELUS Optik TV.
• The Huffington Post Alberta has an Alberta Photographer of the Month feature, and the latest showcases Edmonton photographer Randee Armstrong.

• Canada’s Competition Bureau has approved Postmedia’s proposed acquisition of 173 Sun Media publications. Soon the Journal and the Sun will have the same corporate parent! Here is The Ryan Jespersen Show on the news.
• Bell Media is in trouble after a Globe and Mail story suggested president Kevin Crull intervened in how CTV reported on the CRTC’s recent “pick and pay” decision. Crull has since apologized.
• Nielsen has said it will begin offering data on viewing by Netflix and Amazon Prime subscribers by the middle of the year. It doesn’t sound like Netflix or Amazon are willingly providing the data, so we’ll see how accurate this is.
• Here’s a CNN Money interview with pioneering blogger Andrew Sullivan. “The truth is, I had to stop primarily because it was killing me,” he said.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Wednesday, March 25 will be Nicola Crosbie’s last day on Global Edmonton as she is making the move to CRUZ FM 95.7 where she’ll co-host the morning show with Lochlin Cross. Here’s the statement she posted to Facebook: “I have loved my job at Global and have appreciated greatly everything that a career in television has helped me to achieve.” She is making the change to spend more time with her kids.
• Congratulations to the Edmonton Journal’s Sarah O’Donnell who has been nominated for a National Newspaper Award for excellence in editorial writing. “The Journal has a long history of taking strong editorial positions, crafted by accomplished editorial writers,” O’Donnell said. “It’s very special to think I am part of that tradition.” You can see the full list of nominees here. The winners will be announced in Toronto on May 22.
• Among other things, Omar Mouallem writes the Footnotes column every week for Metro Edmonton. He’s still going to be doing that, but starting next week, he’ll also be Metro National’s biweekly culture columnist. Congrats Omar!
• Edmonton native Stephen Keppler is replacing Alex Hindmarch on Fresh FM, who is rumored to be heading south to Calgary when he leaves the station on April 2. Stephen was most recently in Red Deer at KG Country.
• Here is Marty Forbes on Cam Tait and his new book, Disabled? Hell no! I’m a Sit-Down Comic!: “Cam Tait is one impressive human being.”
• The Edmonton Broadcasters Club spring luncheon is taking place on April 15 at the Norwood Legion. The event will celebrate CHQT’s 50th anniversary.

• The CRTC has made a big decision about TV bundles: “By December 2016, Canadians will be able to subscribe to channels on a pick-and-pay basis, as well as in small packages.” They say the change will offer Canadians more choice and affordability.
