• The Edmonton Oilers aren’t the only local sports team making deals with Rogers Media: FC Edmonton has also signed a partnership agreement with Rogers to have 13 of 14 home games broadcast on Citytv Edmonton and 101.7 World FM.
• Here’s a wrap-up on the RTNDA and AMPIA awards I wrote about last week from Marty Forbes.
• Carrie Doll was the keynote speaker at last week’s Edmonton Broadcasters lunch.
• The next Social Media Breakfast Edmonton event is coming up on Friday at Startup Edmonton. The topic is “Your Digital Toolbox”, spring edition natch.
• Ever wonder what kind of shoes some of your favorite Edmonton Journal personalities like? Wonder no more.
• Here’s an interview with Alberta reporter Amanda Lindhout, who is still recovering from 15 months in captivity.
• Apparently Rod Phillips isn’t the only broadcaster to reach 3,542 games called – Medicine Hat’s Bob Ridley has reached the same milestone!
• If you’re a Windows 8 user, check out the new Metro Canada news app. It works well!
• What do you think about the “live” news feeds that many sites are starting to offer? CBC Edmonton is using ScribbleLive, the Edmonton Journal is just using Twitter, and it looks like 630 CHED has embedded Twitter into its home page.
• A bunch of local food bloggers had a tweetup at La Ronde last week (my Twitter feed was full of food photos that day). Here’s a recap from Wine + Dine.
• Here’s a recap of last week’s Capital Ideas Edmonton mixer.
• Edmonton Sun columnist Lorne Gunter says “the CBC is no more essential to Canadian democracy than any other media outlet” and feels the organization needs to pay its own way.
• Are you a photographer? You might be interested in International Underground Meet Day then, taking place on May 18. Here in Edmonton, participants will be snapping photos of the LRT system!
• Shaw Media is looking for a new Human Resources Advisor, based here in Edmonton.
• Following on the heels of Ezra Klein’s Vox comes The Upshot, a new “explanatory journalism” effort from the New York Times.
• I really enjoyed looking at the roundup of daily newspaper front pages at Newseum when I visted a few years ago. Now, after a campaign by the editors of many weekly newspapers, their front pages will be included too.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• 630 CHED found itself in a world of trouble on Thursday after it posted a controversial poll question online. Many angry Edmontonians weighed in on Twitter, including MLA Thomas Lukaszuk, who threatened to pull all Alberta government advertising off the station. The station later changed the wording of the question and suggested a lack of context was to blame, before finally apologizing on air, removing the poll and original tweet. Unfortunately for them, everything was captured in screenshots in real-time.
• It was disappointing to see the poll, but I also feel bad for all the good people at 630 CHED caught up in the mess. J’lyn Nye called it “a day of tears and disappointment.” Tencer and Grose devoted the first hour of their show on Friday to the mistake.
• Congratulations to Kari Skelton and Ryan Jespersen – the #yegmedia couple announced they are expecting their first child!
• The 2014 Alberta Film & Television Awards, known as The Rosies, were handed out in Calgary on Saturday. Congratulations to all the winners! Filmed-in-Edmonton TV drama Blackstone took home six awards. CTV Edmonton was named Best Daily Newscast, Alberta Primetime was named Best News Series, and Citytv Edmonton won for Best Documentary Under 30 Minutes for Tour of Alberta: Making the Tour, which you can watch on YouTube:

• The RTDNA Canada Awards were also announced on Saturday. CBC Edmonton picked up four awards, followed by Global Edmonton with two.
• Tickets are now available for The Yeggies! Join us on May 9 at the Avenue Theatre.
• Cam Tait has started blogging again, with a new name: Tait on 8.
• CTV Edmonton General Sales Manager Alan Mabee is retiring after 30 years in the position. Looks like he had quite the sendoff! Marty Forbes reported that Susan Reade is stepping in as his replacement.
• On Thursday CBC announced it will cut 657 jobs and get out of the business of airing professional sports, throwing in the towel after the Rogers-NHL deal. Is the CBC destined to simply limp along?
• Shaw Communications announced plans today to layoff around 400 employees, including some in its Shaw Media division. Approximately 140 of the job losses are in Calgary (no word yet on Edmonton).
• The 18th annual Webby Awards are open for voting right now, and Calder Bateman’s Sexgerms.com site is nominated under the Activism category! You’ve got a little over ten days left to vote.
• Last week, Michael Ross posted an analysis of the cities most and least likely to survive the zombie apocalypse. The post caught on like wildfire, with newspapers across the country picking up the story. It was even featured on Geoge Stroumboulopoulos Tonight.
• So Easter is coming up, and that means you’ll see some people wearing bunny costumes. But this is probably not what you are picturing right now – click at your own risk!
• Is it live tweet, livetweet, or live-tweet? I would go with live-tweet probably. You?
• The 2014 finalists and winners of the Pulitzer Prizes have been announced. The Guardian and The Washington Post unsurprisingly took home the prize for Public Service for their work on the Snowden revelations.

• Congratulations to Global Edmonton’s Julie Matthews on reaching 10 years as the Troubleshooter! The program itself has been running for 20 years now – don’t miss this video marking the anniversary. There’s also an interview with Julie Matthews and here’s another from 630 CHED. Here’s part of an infographic that Global produced:

• 630 CHED began broadcasting on March 3, 1954. Here’s a feature on the radio station’s 60th anniversary. Interesting that 630 CHED didn’t even realize the milestone had arrived!
• That made me wonder what other organizations might be celebrating milestones this year. CJSR turned 30 on January 7, CITV (Global Edmonton) turns 40 on September 1, CJRY (Shine FM) turns 10 on September 7, CJNW (HOT 107 FM) turns 5 on October 6, CFRN (CTV Edmonton) turns 60 on October 25, CFCW turns 60 on November 2, CKRA (Capital FM) turns 35 on November 15, and CIRK (K-97) turns 65 sometime this year.
• The Yeggies are coming up in May! Want to volunteer for the event? Let me know!
• I wish I could come up with a great pun for this: OilersNation interviewed with Gene Principe.
• I didn’t know this: the Public Affairs Bureau removed opposition parties from media notices last October. The reason apparently has to do with embargos – the media can be held accountable for breaking them, but non-media can’t be.
• This is on top of news that the Provincial government currently employs 214 full-time equivalent positions in communications at a cost of $23 million annually.
• The Canadian Association of Journalists today announced the finalists for its annual awards. Charles Rusnell and Jennie Russell from CBC Edmonton are finalists in the Community Broadcast category and Shaughn Butts from the Edmonton Journal is a finalist in the Photojournalism category.
• Here’s a look at some of #yegmedia’s ladies at Western Canada Fashion Week!
• Here’s some fun April Fool’s Day fun from The Long John Index: Rogers Acquires Long John Index for $294; Carrie Doll new Chief Intern.
• File this one under not-that-shocking: CBC is expected to announce deep cuts on Thursday following the loss of Hockey Night in Canada.
• Here’s a Life & Times profile of Helen (Patricia) Hollingsworth, a former sports writer for the Edmonton Journal. She passed away on March 9 at the age of 98.
• Recently retired GM of 630 CHED Doug Rutherford watched his home go up in flames just a week after putting it up for sale. Harsh.

• Some interesting news from Skype today – they’ve announced a new solution for broadcasters called Skype TX. It’s described as being “studio grade”.
• One of my favorite sites is Techmeme. I’m addicted. Here’s how it became the must-read news site for tech.
• Vox has launched! I’m really keen to see how their attempt at explaining the news plays out. Here’s a New York Times feature on the effort.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• As mentioned, Friday was Carrie Doll’s final day at CTV Edmonton. After a story about Miguelito’s Little Green Car, her colleagues Dez and Daryl worked with photographer Leroy Schulz to capture her last day. You can watch Carrie’s last broadcast plus a bunch of other farewell videos on CTV Edmonton’s website. There was even a really impressive cake! Photographer Bruce Clarke also captured a great shot of Carrie. Lincoln recapped her final day in his latest video too.
• I love this story about Chris Slobodian, the cheerful guy you’ll find handing out free copies of Metro at University Station. Sounds like he has quite a reputation on campus!
• Congratulations to The Gateway, winner of Outstanding Campus Newspaper in the 2014 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards.
• Also, The Gateway now has a magazine called The Good Life. You can check out the inaugural issue here.
• Edmonton Sun columnist Terry Jones visited Lacombe Junior High School to share some stories from his career and give advice to aspiring writers. Cool to learn that Terry started the school paper when he was a student there!
• After more than 50 years writing for the Times Colonist, Jim Hume is being forced to put down his pen due to “a curb on expenditures for freelance writers”. He was an assistant city editor at the Edmonton Journal in the early 1960s. Jim turns 91 years old later this year, which makes me wonder if he’s the oldest living Edmonton Journal alum! I love that he’s still going strong too, with a new website.
• An Edmonton woman’s cat video recently surpassed 200,000 views on YouTube. That means we’ve now made it as a city right?
• I must not have visited iNews880 on a mobile device for months, but I did the other day and was surprised to see an attractive, functional mobile site! Check it out. I assume it launched last August when their website redesign went live, but I’m not sure.
• Rumor has it Chris Myers is coming to Edmonton from Saskatoon to take over as the new Program Director for Virgin Radio 104.9 FM.
• Global Edmonton’s Shaye Ganam versus The Fly! Who will win?!
• In case you missed it, here’s the second issue of the pulp.
• This was nice to see: TRC thanked the media for their “overwhelming support” of the Alberta National Event.
• Odvod Publishing Inc. is looking for an editorial intern to join Avenue Edmonton starting May 5.
• Heads up! Capital Ideas Edmonton is hosting a mixer on April 16 at La Ronde. It looks like they are expanding to Calgary too, as their next event takes place there on April 23.
• Okay maybe this was mean, but I was annoyed. I hope they can find a way to earn revenue and deliver an enjoyable consumer experience.
• A crackdown on unpaid interns at Toronto Life and The Walrus has “divided opinion within Canada’s publishing community.” Nice to see the Edmonton Journal’s Lucas Timmons cited.
• Felix Salmon wrote about “gorgeous new redesigns” last week, saying he’s over them. “It’s time for websites to put a lot more effort into de-emphasizing less important stories, reserving the grand presentation formats only for the pieces which deserve it.” He’s got a point.
• There has been a lot of criticism about Nate Silver and his new site FiveThirtyEight recently. Here’s a good counterpoint.

When I see the mayor these days, it is usually when he’s surrounded by microphones and cameras!

• The recipients of the 2014 Alberta Magazine Awards were announced in Calgary last week. Congrats to Omar Mouallem and all the other local writers and magazines who cleaned up!
• Speaking of Omar, he’s got a fancy new website. Looks good, though I wish the blog were updated more frequently!
• Friday is the day that Carrie Doll will say goodbye to CTV. They have setup a website for you to submit your stories and memories of Carrie, and they encourage you to tweet with the hashtag #GoodbyeCarrie.

• Congrats to Cam Tait on landing at the Edmonton Sun, the “new home for good news in Edmonton.”
• We likely won’t know any details until September, but it seems as though Stony Plain is about to get its own radio station.
• Congratulations to everyone who was nominated for a Yeggie this year!
• Here’s a profile on Mary Bailey, founder of The Tomato. Incredible that she has been publishing the magazine for so long!
• The latest issue of The Pulp is now up!

• Shalom Media is launching a new 24/7 satellite TV channel and one of its new production units is located in Edmonton. Why here? Well, “representatives of Shalom Peace Fellowship prayed, and God indicated where they should set up production units.” He smiles upon Edmonton apparently!
• Sorry, but if the video takes six months to reach you, it’s not a viral video. Please stop misusing the phrase.
• Here’s a recap of Capital Ideas Edmonton’s last event on making social media pay.
• Calgary’s AMP Radio has received a ton of backlash for its “bank or burn” stunt that saw them burn $5,000 in cash (apparently it’s not illegal to destroy banknotes, just coins). What a dumb attempt to seek attention, though I guess it worked.
• The Banff Centre is looking to get into the world of radio and is seeking a radio host.
• I appreciated this take on data journalism. It’s important to remember that simply presenting the data isn’t enough.

• The Alberta Film & Television Awards nominees were announced on Thursday. Edmonton-made TV drama Blackstone earned the most nominations at 13. The awards will be handed out on April 12 in Calgary.
• The finalists in the 2013 National Newspaper Awards competition have been announced. The Edmonton Journal picked up two nominations and the Edmonton Sun picked up one. The winners will be announced on May 30 in Charlottetown.
• Congratulations to local photographer Kyle Giesbrecht on being recognized by Google for his work on the Street View tour of the Edmonton Corn Maze!
• If you missed the Edmonton Food Bloggers Meetup like I did, you’ll want to check out the recaps from organizers Maki and Marianne. Looks like it was a good time!
• Here is the last column from Rayanne Forbes in the Edmonton Examiner. She is taking time away to undergo her sixth surgery related to Graves Disease. I wish you well Rayanne!
• Caitlin Crawshaw profiled photographer Jimmy Jeong in this piece at Work of Arts, the official magazine of the U of A’s Faculty of Arts. Jimmy has been a freelance photographer for 13 years now, after starting out at the Gateway while he was a student at the U of A.

• Here’s a preview of ‘Against the Ropes’, a new “30-minute broadcast form series that chronicles the lives of the members, staff and owner of Panther Gym.” The gym is located at 111 Street and 102 Avenue, and the show is being produced by Gruvpix Productions:

• CBC’s ombudsman has passed judgment on the practice of journalists taking on paid speaking engagements: “Given that Journalistic Standards and Practices spells out a commitment to independence, and the Conflict of Interest guidelines encompass perception of conflict as well, it is inconsistent with policy when CBC news and current affairs staff accept payment from groups that are likely to be in the news.”
• FiveThirtyEight, the new data journalism organization being led by Nate Silver, launched today. In an introductory article, Silver talks about the approach they’ll take and about the need for better data journalism. If you’re expecting just charts and infographics, you’ll be disappointed: his piece clocks in at over 3500 words!
• Here are two FiveThirtyEight articles to get you started: Why Gretzky Had It Easy, and ‘Data Is’ vs. ‘Data Are’ (thank goodness ‘data is’ wins).

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• The radio ratings for November 2013 to February 2014 are out. 630 CHED takes the top spot, followed by Now 102.3 FM and CBC Radio 1. At the other end of the scale, I don’t think iNews 880’s share has ever been lower – is change on the horizon? This post has the demographic breakdown.
• A few weeks ago Edmonton Journal editor Margo Goodhand asked for feedback on whether the paper should continue to run editorials. Her decision is to keep them.
• Rod Phillips will be inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame on May 30. Congrats!
• The Bear 100.3 has run a series of contests that four U of A students feel are sexist. The students have launched an online “Girlcotte” in response.
• Want to help Tamara organize the next Meet the Media tweetup? She’s looking for some assistance and would like to hold the event in May or June.
• There’s a new show about local activism on Shaw TV called From the Ground Up. It airs at 9:30am every day through March 16.
• I haven’t checked it out yet, but Alberta Venture has a new iPad app called 2014 Business Barometer.
• Unfortunately neither Edmonton show won, but it was great to see Blackstone and Tiny Plastic Men nominated in this year’s the Canadian Screen Awards! You can see all the winners here.
• The Gateway is still looking for a News Editor and an Opinion Editor.
• iMEDIA takes place this weekend! Looks like a pretty great lineup with lots of opportunities to learn about social media.

• I have seen many people point to this article from the March 2014 edition of The Walrus: The Story behind the Rob Ford Story. By Ivor Tossell, it talks about how “a little-known Supreme Court ruling unmuzzled reporters—and changed Canadian journalism.”
• Rogers today unveiled its “dream team” of broadcasters to anchor national NHL coverage when it takes over from CBC next season. George Stroumboulopoulos will anchor, with Ron & Don bringing Coaches Corner to Rogers. Despite a lot of fluff about the new look of Hockey Night in Canada, the lineup looks decidedly familiar: aged, white, and male.
• I’ve wondered about this stat. The CRTC says there were about 70,000 payphones across the country in 2013, down from 115,000 in 2006. There aren’t many left here in Edmonton.
• This could be one of those change-the-game-entirely kind of announcements: Getty Images is making its millions of photos free to use. You can embed them just like a YouTube video. For example:

• Here is the first issue of The Pulp, “a cutting edge online magazine that makes the most of pop, quirk, and nerd culture in Edmonton.” They’ve got a pretty attractive website and you can follow them on Twitter at @thepulppress. Congratulations to Cheryl Cottrell-Smith, editor-in-chief, and the rest of the team! They’re looking for contributors too.
• Did you watch The Oscars last night? I’ll admit that I did. According to CTV, more Edmontonians watch The Oscars than The Super Bowl. They called it “the biggest entertainment audience in Canada since 2011.”
• There’s now a campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds for the Canadian University Press. Using the hashtag #keepCUPstrong, the campaign declares: “Canadian University Press is the only organization in Canada with a mission to unite, strengthen and support student press.” The organization is looking to raise $50,000.
• This morning was the first show for Scott McCord and Ryan Bradley on 95.7 CRUZ FM. McCord was last at The Bear here in Edmonton.
• David Howell left his post as City Editor at the Edmonton Journal back in November. Now his Twitter profile says, “looking forward to covering energy beat, starting around March 10.” Mark Iype is now the City Editor at the Journal.
• Want to work at The Gateway? They’re hiring! Applicants looking to join the editorial staff should submit a resume by March 7.
• Global Edmonton’s Su-Ling Goh has dug up a historic ITV poster from 1994. Weatherman Bill and sports guy Darren – I remember watching them all the time.
• A total of 90 finalists have been chosen for the 2014 INMA Awards, for the best work in media marketing. Gastropost Alberta was chosen to be a finalist in the “Best Idea of Innovation to Create New Profit Centers” category.
• Well here’s a use for blogging you don’t see every day! Sarah Vibert wrote a post asking for someone to look after her kids. Not just babysit, but to offer them “a forever home”. Apparently it is a private matter unless the children’s well-being is a concern. Anyway, it was a popular story both on social media and in the traditional media.
• Shawn Waddell, a longtime senior editor at The Canadian Press, died on Saturday, February 22 at the age of 62. He worked at the Edmonton Journal in the early 70s before making the move to CP in 1975.
• CMT was in Edmonton recently shooting an episode of its “Burger Wars” TV show (because burgers are country, I guess). It features The Next Act Pub, Rodeo Burger, and Delux Burger Bar, and will air sometime in the spring or summer.
• There’s a lot of discussion about embargoes in the greater media world, but I haven’t seen too much locally. Premier Redford blogged a bit of a preview of today’s throne speech, prompting Don Braid to ask the embargo question. There are legal reasons some of this stuff is embargoed, but I think Don’s question is fair.
• The next Capital Ideas Edmonton event is coming up on March 19 with a look at how to make social media pay off.
• The next Art of Conversation takes place on March 14 at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald!
• More than 15 million Canadians watched at least part of the men’s gold medal hockey win over Sweden on February 23rd. CBC also said the Canada-USA semifinal game attracted 625,000 viewers on the web or mobile devices, and that Canadian viewers watched about 14 million hours of online video over the 18 days of the games.
• Apparently CBC news anchor Peter Mansbridge recently gave a paid speech to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, causing a stir about disclosure and ethics.
• This is a really interesting discussion on Reddit and crowdsourcing the news. “I think the fundamental difference with Reddit (and Twitter for that matter) is that they are far more transparent than any traditional media outlet has ever been, and likely ever will be, when it comes to the editorial process — in other words, deciding which stories run on the front page and which don’t appear at all.”

• This news broke on Valentine’s Day but I haven’t had the chance to mention it yet: congratulations to Kerry Powell who is joining Global Edmonton as managing editor! Looking forward to it!
• Congratulations to all of the finalists in the Alberta Magazine Awards! The gala takes place on March 20 in Calgary.
• Here is Linda’s latest Social Media Notes. I had the opportunity to chat about social media with her and Brittney at Saturday’s ONA Edmonton conference. We talked about having some fun and showing that you’re a real person through your social media posts. You may know that one of the ways Linda does that is by sharing pictures of her cats. I joked that I should start including pictures of puppies. So, here you go!

• CJSR is broadcasting the annual Homelessness Radio Marathon on Wednesday. There are a lot of great stories as part of CJSR’s Street Bytes series.
• The next Art of Conversation takes place on March 14 at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald on the patio and in the Wedgewood room. Graham Hicks, Rob Christie, and Audie Lynds are your hosts.
• Avenue Edmonton is looking for an editorial intern. The deadline to apply is April 4.
• On February 13, J’Lyn Nye had an hour long chat with Graham Hicks on the 630 CHED Afternoon News. Graham wrote, “We had a wonderful wide-ranging conversation about Edmonton, charities and the transition into the less-hectic life of semi-retirement, if you can call it that!” I thought their conversation about his column was great.
• David Johnston is moving on from the Journal (his next move is still to be decided). I like the farewell cake that his colleagues Lucas and Ryan made. Paula wrote a farewell post on Facebook, calling him her “social media mentor.” Here’s his final Relinked column.
• If you haven’t gotten your nominations in yet for The Yeggies, what are you waiting for?! Nominations close Friday, so take a few minutes and share with us your favorites from 2013.
• Apparently Edmonton filmmaker and journalist Dave Walker is missing, somewhere in Cambodia.
• Thomas Alliance Inc. is looking for a community newspaper reporter/photographer to join its team. The deadline to apply is March 7.

• Have you noticed the new paging that the Journal has added to its website? It looks like this:

• How annoying! First of all, it’s rare that an article is long enough to warrant that functionality (there’s usually only a paragraph or two on the second page). But worse than that, when I click either “2” or “View as one page”, it jumps back to the top of the screen (I’m using IE11). I have no idea why they introduced this. It doesn’t even do a page load, so it can’t be for page views.
• While I am complaining about the Journal, I think the ads have gotten worse. I want the ads to be there so that they can make some money, but they’re so intrusive and they slow the page so much that I’m tempted to use an ad-blocker just to make the site usable. This is what the front page looked like for me tonight:
