• Erin Isfeld has been named co-anchor of CTV News at Six beginning Monday, October 23. She has been at CTV Edmonton since 2005.
• Good journalism really can make a difference in the world. Here’s Paula Simons with the latest on Serenity’s case.
• Grant Ainsley wrote about the local media’s coverage of the terror attacks here in Edmonton. “Twitter is great for giving you snippets of breaking news, but with a story like this, I needed more context.”
• Episode 76 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features Sandra Sperounes and Agnes DeMarco, “the music writer and the rock-n-roll mom who shine a spotlight on creative people with their podcast, Agnes + Sandra’s Three-Way.”
• Kerry Diotte went on a bit of a rant about local journalists on Saturday night.
• Tim is looking for contributing writers for the winter edition of The Yards. Get in touch with him if you want to explore what’s best in the core!
• This year’s edition of the ATCO Edmonton Sun Christmas Charity Auction is taking place October 31 to November 2. Cam Tait is looking to collect 200 experience packages by October 25 and is up to 138 already!
• CISN Country 103.9 FM’s Yards for Hope radiothon in support of the Hope Mission blew past its goal of raising $110,000. Nice work!
• Big Brother Canada was in Edmonton last week with a casting call for the upcoming season.
• The Alberta Teachers’ Association is looking for a Communications Officer, News and Public Relations. The deadline to apply is October 18.
• A reminder that the next Edmonton Podcasting Meetup is scheduled for October 21 at Variant Edition Comics & Culture. The featured guest will be Douglas Hoyer talking about podcast music.
• Get up-to-date on all the election-related news with Taproot’s weekly election update and check out the election microsite to help get prepared for Election Day.

And here is some slightly less local media stuff:

• Forget the selfie: how portrait studios are upping everyone’s social media game.
• I was an early reader of Slashdot so I enjoyed this look back from founder Rob Malda on the site’s 20th anniversary.
• Facebook is testing a new “i” button that shows Wikipedia entries and additional related articles when they are looking at a link. It’s another effort by the company to provide greater context.
• Gather is a new project that aims to “support community-minded journalists and other engagement professionals.”

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Saturday night was one of those nights for journalists and other members of the local media (for details of the attacks, see my links from yesterday). Big breaking news brings with it clarity of purpose for everyone involved in producing the news, but it also means long hours, a lack of information, and yes, some criticism. On the whole, I think local journalists did a fine job on Saturday night.
• There was lots of back-patting by journalists over the way local media handled the events of Saturday night. There was also some criticism for sensationalism and sharing unverified information. Jana Pruden posted a good thread on the context of information in a breaking news event.
• Locals were paying attention to the news on Saturday evening of course, but it spread beyond our city fairly quickly too, with Fox News and others picking up the story. As the news spread, and especially as Catherine Griwkowsky did a live hit on CNN, #yegmedia was trending. Global Edmonton has a brief recap of how social media was used after the attacks.
• Hina Alam has joined Postmedia’s news team here in Edmonton. She was most recently a staff reporter at the Toronto Star.
• The launch party for the Alberta Podcast Network was a big success last week, with a fantastic turnout of creators and supporters of local podcasts. Here’s a recap and links to the speeches and interviews. Congrats to Karen and the team of volunteers that made it happen!
• Rogers held a media launch for CityNews at Rogers Place on Friday afternoon hosted by Gene Principe and featuring: Dave Budge, VP News and Information; Colette Watson, SVP TV Broadcast Operations; Shelley Russell, General Sales Manager for Edmonton; and Scott Fralick, Supervising Producer. I plan to write more about CityNews in the days ahead.
• Jeff at Edmonton Quotient has a good roundup of all the local media coverage of the municipal election.
• Marty Forbes writes about Terry Jones in his latest column at the Sun. “Terry is a great promoter of this city and understands how sports can be a key driver for community pride,” he wrote. The October 11 edition of the Edmonton Broadcasters Club luncheon will honour Terry.
• A special edition of CBC’s Edmonton AM took place at Remedy Cafe in Terwillegar on Wedesday evening. Here’s the recap.
• The latest episode of the Sound Off Podcast with Matt Cundill features Sonic 102.9 FM’s Lauren Hunter. “We talk about everything from how to tackle the social media beast, to what makes a post go viral, and, of course, Connor McDavid and the Connor McPortrait.”
• The next meeting of the Edmonton Podcasting Meetup is scheduled for Saturday, October 21 at Variant Edition Comics & Culture. The event will feature Doug Hoyer, “who has composed more Edmonton podcast theme music than anyone else on Earth (probably).”
• The YMCA of Northern Alberta is looking for a Senior Communications Coordinator.
• OilersNation is looking for new sales representatives to join the team.

And here is some slightly less local media stuff:

• When the news broke on Saturday night here in Edmonton, it was great to see many people pointing to A Consumer’s Guide to Breaking News from NPR. Always good to have that link handy.
• When it comes to digital revenue for news, we’ve moved from “nobody will pay for news” to “not more than a tiny group of people will pay for news.” It’s slow, but it’s progress.
• Netflix plans to spend $7 billion USD on productions next year, and $500 million CAD of that will be right here in Canada, thanks to a new deal it has struck with the government.
• The Pew Research Center has looked at more than 3,000 news stories during the first 100 days of the Trump presidency across 24 media outlets and found that “five specific topics dominated coverage about Trump and the administration.”

• Global News has announced that Jim Haskins is Global Edmonton’s new News Director and Station Manager. “Replacing Tim Spelliscy who retired last month, Jim joins the Edmonton team from Global News Halifax where he worked as a News Director and Station Manager for the last five years.” He started last week.
• The usual local media suspects are all well-represented in the 2017 Best of Edmonton from Vue Weekly. Sonic 102.9 FM’s Garner Andrews won Best Radio Host (AM), Now 102.3 FM won Best Radio Station, Global Edmonton’s Gord Steinke won Best TV News Anchor, Global Edmonton won Best TV Station, and CTV Edmonton’s Josh Classen won Best TV Meteorologist. On the social media side, The Borchelli Brothers won Best Podcast, Lisa Evans won Best Tweeter, Daveberta.ca won Best Local Affairs Blog, and Linda Hoang won Best Food Blog.
• LitFest runs October 12-22. Writing (on the web) While Female takes place on October 15 and features Alex Zabjek, Paula Simons, Jana Pruden, and Kathleen Smith.
• Keep up-to-date on the municipal election with the latest Edmonton Election Update from Taproot Edmonton. Each week we roundup the news and send it to your inbox.
• The Alberta Podcast Network‘s launch party is sold out for Wednesday evening, but you can catch some of the show on Facebook Live courtesy of CKUA starting at about 7:35pm.
• Glass Buffalo Magazine is hosting a writing prize reception on Wednesday evening at Yellowhead Brewery. “As you mingle over libations with fellow writers and literature lovers, you’ll hear engaging stories and poetry from Edmonton’s best emerging creative-writing talent, including the finalists for our 2017 writing contests and our Fall 2017 issue contributors!”
• Episode 75 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features Caleb Caswell, “who combines his background in journalism and music to have sincere conversations about Edmonton’s music scene on The Tear Down.”
• A reminder that the Edmonton Broadcasters Club Fall Luncheon is coming up on October 11 with guest speaker Terry Jones.
• Speaking of Terry Jones, he wrote recently about the CFL’s efforts to improve viewership. “Early evidence is that the league’s effort to draw new fans and especially younger fans is working.”
• CBC Edmonton is looking for a temporary Associate Producer for Radio. The position will run until November 2018.
• Tickets are on sale now for The Media Challenge at the Edmonton Comedy Festival which takes place on Thursday, October 12.
• This is neat: some local bloggers are taking part in the Canadian Bloggers Fall Home Tour. “All week we will welcome you into our homes for some seasonal home decor inspiration.”

• Non-profit educational TV network TVO, based in Toronto, has launched a $2 million, seven-person project called Ontario Hubs that aims to broaden its geographic reach.
• Here’s a story from 2015 that has been brought back to help celebrate Sportsnet 590 The FAN’s 25th anniversary. “Welcome to sports call-in radio, the world’s cheapest therapy.”
• Twitter is, perhaps appropriately, very reluctant to do anything about Donald Trump’s account. But the company has pledged to update its public guidance on newsworthiness to make the rules for removing tweets clearer.

• The Athletic, a subscription-based paywalled sports site, has launched in Edmonton. Jonathan Willis will be writing frequent columns and says “Allan Mitchell, perhaps better known as Lowetide, will be a weekly columnist” and that “Sunil Agnihotri, Minnia Feng and (Black Dog) Pat McLean” will also be “featured contributors”. You can check out the site here.
• Congratulations to CISN 103.9 FM’s Chris Scheetz, Jacqueline Sweeney, and Matt DeBeurs on winning “On-Air Personalities of the Year” at the 2017 Canadian Country Music Association Awards.
• Terry Jones is the guest speaker at the Edmonton Broadcasters Club’s Fall Luncheon which takes place on October 11.
• Marty Forbes has advice for local media folks who want to get known: “Get involved in our community. Check that, get ‘sincerely involved in our community.'”
• Sonic 102.9 FM’s Lauren Hunter painted a picture of Connor McDavid that has come to be known as the McPortrait, and last week actually got McDavid to autograph it! Prints are going to be sold on Saturday, September 23 at Denizen Hall with 100% of the proceeds going to YESS.
• Former Edmonton Journal editor-in-chief Margo Goodhand has written a new book called Runaway Wives and Rogue Feminists: The Origin of the Women’s Shelter Movement in Canada. She is launching it at Audrey’s on Tuesday, September 19.
• Karen Unland is speaking about podcasting and the future of traditional media on The Ryan Holtz Show on Tuesday afternoon. Catch it on Facebook Live starting at 1pm.
• Metro Edmonton’s Kevin Maimann took Edmonton’s first Aquamermaid class. “My flopping and flailing was less than majestic,” he says. Brave!
• CBC Edmonton’s Portia Clark is hosting CBC’s Night at the Needle on Monday, October 2 at The Needle Vinyl Tavern. It’s “an engaging conversation with CBC reporters, special guests and you!”
• The Edmonton Comedy Festival presents the Media Challenge on Thursday, October 12 at the ATB Financial Arts Barns. “Hosted by Kevin Stobo, starring Tim Nutt, and depending on how many chicken out, featuring 16 local media personalities attempting stand-up comedy for the first or second time.”

• Congratulations to Jeremy Klaszus on the launch of The Sprawl down in Calgary. The “pop-up journalism” project focused on Calgary is active now on Patreon.
• Detroit has appointed an official “chief storyteller” to remodel the city’s narrative. Aaron Foley, “a popular African-American journalist”, will be the first to hold the position, “believed to be the first of its kind in the US.”
• David Carr influenced dozens of writers throughout his career, including the many that shared stories about his guidance in the latest installment of The Atlantic’s series on mentorship.
• The Conversation looks at the rapid decline of local news and suggests social media can be part of the solution but only if we demand that it be used responsibly.
• BuzzFeed is launching a live morning news show show called AM to DM on Twitter, and has shared some of the lessons learned about doing video and reporting.

• The University of Alberta launched Folio.ca last week, a new website that “offers news and information in five areas: science and tech, health and wellness, society and culture, business and commentary.” The site is “an additional communication tool for the university” and isn’t meant to replace traditional methods like media relations.
• The summer radio ratings are out, with 102.3 Now! Radio (CKNO-FM) returning to the top spot just ahead of 630 CHED. Here is Broadcast Dialogue’s take on the numbers.
• “Where’s Alberta’s Legislature Press Gallery when you actually need it? Nowhere to be found,” says David Climenhaga in his latest post on the relationship between the media and the government.
• Carole Anne Devaney returned to the anchor desk alongside Gord Steinke on September 5 on Global Edmonton.
• Broadcast Dialogue has a look at the talent lineup for CityNews Edmonton, which started airing its newscasts on September 4.
• Douglas Hildebrand has been named Director and Publisher of the University of Alberta Press, effective October 10, 2017.
• Local writer Tim Querengesser has a Patreon page for Walkcast, “a podcast that goes walking in cities.” Here is Episode 2, which features a discussion with Dr. Darren Markland on the topic of drivers who hit and kill pedestrians. We talked to Dr. Markland back in December for Taproot’s story on how to stop discounting pedestrian deaths.
• Episode 74 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features Sylvia Schneider, “co-host of the Equinely-Inclined podcast for Canada’s horse community, and a pioneer of Alberta podcasting”. She’s been doing it since 2007!
• The Bonnyville Nouvelle is looking for a General Assignment Reporter. The deadline to apply is September 26.
• Linda and Brittney are hosting another Instagrammable Walls of Edmonton Photo Walk on Saturday, September 16. It’s free to attend!
• A follow-up on one of last week’s news items courtesy of Jeff – the new “Life by Design” section you’ll find in the Journal is indeed Postmedia-wide and is most definitely not local.

• From Politico: The Rise of the Twitter Thread, “The compelling, incendiary literary form of the Trump era.”
• With all the hurricane news on TV right now, the debate about dangerous stand-ups is raging. “Some critics wondered whether they are unnecessary and overly sensational spectacles” but others “insist that the visuals from the storms are essential in persuading people to take hurricane threats seriously and getting them to leave the area.” I’m not so sure.
• Plenty of video coverage of Hurricane Irma came not from cable news, but from sites like the Washington Post. They’re staffing up and expanding their video capabilities.
• The Guardian has a feature on The Wall Street Journal’s Trump problem. “Dozens have left the paper in the past year and interviews with current and ex-staffers show outrage over pressure from management to normalize Trump.”

• CityNews Edmonton launched tonight at 6pm. Here is the new website.
• Global Edmonton’s Tim Spelliscy officially retired on Thursday last week after 38 years. Here’s a farewell interview with Nancy Carlson. He was even serenaded by Kevin Dabbs and Gord Steinke!
• Sportsnet’s coverage of the 2017-2018 Oilers season will start on October 4. The broadcast team will include Drew Remenda, who “is a bit of a lightning rod,” writes Kurt Leavins. Here’s more on the reaction fans shared on Twitter from David Staples.
• Tickets are now on sale for The Yards Fall Salon which is taking place on September 21 at CKUA.
• Grant Ainsley wrote about Con Boland’s death and the impact of social media on how such new spreads.
• Jeff offers some commentary on the media’s coverage of the turning lane at Jasper Avenue and 109 Street, saying “it’s a bit of ‘bothsideism’ that equates the issues of people driving and people walking as equal.”
• Great to see that the Edmonton Community Foundation has become a sponsor of the Alberta Podcast Network! The ECF has its own podcast too – The Well-Endowed Podcast.
• I can’t seem to find anything about this online yet, but an insert in the Edmonton Journal this weekend says a new monthly section called “Life by Design” will be launching on September 8. It will feature “curated content from top Canadian magazines” including Chatelaine, Today’s Parent, Flare, and MoneySense, which leads me to believe this is a Postmedia-wide section and will not contain any local content.
• Avenue Edmonton has a feature on Ruth B, the musical success story who was able to convert her large following on social media into offers for record deals.
• The World Press Photo Montreal 2017 Exposition is taking place until October 1 and among those featured is Edmonton’s own Amber Bracken.

• Marc Edge, author of The News We Deserve: The Transformation of Canada’s Media Landscape, wrote in The Tyee that the “Netflix tax” is a misnomer used to smear a great idea.
• Also in The Tyee, Peter Menzies writes that “an ad-free, better-funded CBC that shares its reporting could help keep local journalism alive” here in Canada.
• ProPublica has created a Facebook Messenger bot to collect stories from readers about hate speech. They hope it might also double as “another form of storytelling.”‘
• Jack Shafer writes in Politico that the op-ed pages in the New York Times have returned to their roots, when “the whole idea was to trigger reader insurrections with outrageous views.”

• Raffy Boudjikanian is making the move from CBC Calgary to CBC Edmonton next week. He tweeted that he’ll “have to work hard to fill the spot vacated” by Briar Stewart.
• Jay Stone will be the new Program Director for up! 99.3 FM here in Edmonton. He was previously at 980 CJME in Regina where his last day will be September 8.
• Local filmmaker Randy Brososky has been selected by TELUS STORYHIVE to receive funding to produce the first six episodes of his “darkly comedic” web series, Necessary Evil. The episodes will be available on TELUS Optik TV On Demand next summer. Congrats Randy!
• The launch party for the fall issue of The Yards will take place on September 21 at CKUA Radio. Save the date!
• Episode 73 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features Jeff MacCallum, “one-half of the team behind two Edmonton podcasts that focus on independent music on the prairies: Cups N Cakes and Inside the Artist’s Studio.”
• CBC Edmonton published a feature on EPS Sgt. David Jones who uses Twitter to “humanize the badge a little bit.”
• Stump Kitchen, a video series about cooking by local Alexis Hillyard, has amassed 221 patrons already on Patreon. Congrats!
• A fire at City Centre Mall on Thursday evening caused an evacuation of the CBC Edmonton newsroom. Staff started to return on Friday after air quality concerns were lifted though power remained limited.
• Rogers Communications is looking for a CHR Imaging Producer here in Edmonton. In case you’re wondering, CHR is contemporary hit radio and the role would be focused largely on Kiss 91.7 FM.
• The latest Edmonton Quotient feature is about Edmonton’s Indigenous Tech Opportunity. The story focuses on Jacquelyn Cardinal, a graduate of the Digital Media Production program at Edmonton Digital Arts College, and her brother Hunter who launched Naheyawin, an Edmonton communications and engagement agency “that is firmly grounded in traditional teachings from their heritage at the Sucker Creek Cree First Nation”.
• Heads up: The Banff Centre is hosting a journalism summit from October 20-22. The Democracy Project: Journalism in the Age of Alt-Facts will “discuss practical next steps in the critical conversation around media and democracy.”
• A reminder that if you’re looking for the latest news about the Municipal Election you should join Taproot!

And here is some slightly less local media stuff:

• A new monthly print paper called The West End Phoenix is launching in Toronto this fall. “The Phoenix is planning to publish longform profiles and features, investigative stories, and photo essays, along with some of the more traditional elements of local news.”
• Country Music Television (CMT) Canada is going to stop playing music videos as it launches its fall programming and will instead feature “funny, light-hearted comedies.”
• The Tow Center for Digital Journalism has published A Definitive Timeline of Platforms and Publishers. It covers everything from the launch of Google AdWords on October 23, 2000 to now. I wish the entries had hyperlinks to source material.
• Facebook has hired former New York Times public editor Liz Spayd to help manage the company’s transparency efforts. “Spayd’s role will be as an outsider who is inside, one who pushes boundaries at Facebook.”
• Quartz is planning to unveil a suite of Slack-based tools to help create bots that assist journalists. “Quartz is building the tools, which it teased last year, thanks to the $250,000 grant it got from the Knight Foundation in late 2016.”

• Daniel Kaszor, a former editor-in-chief at The Gateway who has been at the National Post since 2008, is returning to Edmonton to work at EEDC starting September 11. “I am going to be working with the EEDC as content manager highlighting all of the very cool stuff that’s happening in #yeg,” he tweeted.
• Marty Forbes wrote last week about how technology is changing the world of media. “Things are changing so rapidly it’s literally impossible to catch up as new apps and companies evolve or dissolve in the World Wide Web.”
• Karen Unland was interviewed about the Alberta Podcast Network this week on Northern Nerd Network’s Nerdcast. You can learn more about the network that promotes and supports Alberta-made podcasts here.
• Congratulations to Paula Simons and her husband on their 25th wedding anniversary!
• Looking to support independent local journalism? Edmonton Quotient has an updated list of “Edmonton-focused media organizations where your money creates local stories and conversations.”
• Episode 72 of the Seen and Heard in Edmonton podcast features Erika Ensign of Verity! “and many, many other podcasts.” Audio was recorded at the July podcasting meetup.

• FilmLocal is a community site that launched earlier this summer with a goal of “bringing together filmmakers, clients, and people wanting to break into the industry into a single, one-stop-shop type of community – all with the collective goal of making films.”
• CBC Edmonton is looking for a Senior Producer for TV news.
• Aberdeen Publishing is looking for a Multimedia Features Reporter in Jasper. The deadline to apply is September 1.
• So on Wednesday last week, a bat got into the CBC Edmonton newsroom. It was not a planned guest. After about 30 minutes, the bat, christened #cbcbat by that point, was finally captured. Rival newsrooms poked fun, accusing CBC of one-upsmanship. Can you tell it’s summer?!

• Ezra Levant was interviewed by Ryan Jespersen today about The Rebel’s coverage of the events in Charlottesville. Levant had sent a memo to staff about the alt-right rally. “Also Monday, Rebel Media co-founder Brian Lilley announced he had parted ways with the group, concerned with its increasingly harsh tone on issues like immigration and Islam.” There’s more on the news at CBC and daveberta.
• Here’s Jeff Jarvis on how he’d try to save a newspaper if he ran one. “Rather than merely creating a product called content and attracting an audience to sell to advertisers — our old model — we can now reconceive of journalism as a service to our communities, convening them into informed, civil, and productive conversation and helping them improve their lives. Nothing less.”
• TuneIn Inc. has raised $50 million to fund its growth at a valuation of about $500 million. TuneIn was founded in 2002 and “offers thousands of radio stations on demand for free to more than 75 million users.”
• Postmedia is selling its west-end Toronto printing plant for $30.5 million to help pay down its debt.
• Netflix has lured Shonda Rhimes way from ABC Studios and has signed her to a multi-year production deal. Last week, Disney announced it would end its deal with Netflix to launch its own streaming service.

• Charles Adler interviewed 630 CHED’s Bob Layton. “Layton the Legend”, he tweeted.
• Jason Roberts, formerly of up! 99.3 FM, has announced he is joining 100.3 The Bear FM. His first day on-air will be August 14.
• We’re writing an election roundup at Taproot Edmonton regularly from now until the election in October. Here’s the last edition, and we’ll send a new one this week. You can sign up for our mailing list here to get it delivered to your inbox.
• Happy birthday to Grant Ainsley! He used the opportunity to reflect on local media growing up in the 1960s and 1970s.
• The latest Seen and Heard in Edmonton newsletter clarifies how the popular blog and podcast fits in with the new Alberta Podcast Network. “I’ve been the public face of both Seen and Heard in Edmonton and the Alberta Podcast Network, and it might be helpful to understand what each is for and where they differ and converge,” Karen wrote.
• Here’s a tip from Tom Braid: former Edmonton Sun editor Gary Poignant has released a self-published book called 11-21-83 which explores the unsolved deaths of Murray Sparrow and Kathy Gilligan. He wrote about the case in the Sun back in 2014.
• Congratulations to Colleen Murray on being named one of the top 100 genealogy blogs by Feedspot!
• InHouse, an infill division of the Beaverbrook Group of Companies, is looking for a Social Media and Marketing Coordinator.

• Here’s a great feature on Patreon, a platform that allows you to support independent creators.
• Netflix has made its first acquisition, buying comic publisher Millarworld, the company founded by Mark Millar.
• BuzzFeed News is launching a new morning show on Twitter later this year. It’s a bit of an experiment for both BuzzFeed and Twitter.
• Columbia Journalism School is launching a new master of science degree in data journalism. It will be aimed at students who want “practical, hands-on training essential to producing deeply reported data-driven stories.”
