Here are my weekly Edmonton notes:
- I think everyone was surprised by Calgary’s last-minute bid for EXPO 2017. Mayor Mandel said, “we’re not interested in an Edmonton-Calgary bid”, putting to rest (for now) any notion that the two cities might work together.
- Pretty big news in sports this week: the Oilers named Pat Quinn head coach, and Tom Renney associate coach.
- The late spring/early summer radio ratings have been released – you can read all the details here.
- The City’s newest poet laureate is Roland Pemberton, also known as Cadence Weapon. You can read his story on Edmonton Stories here.
- You can read the latest Next Gen Weekly Newsletter online here.
- CBC recently announced another round of job cuts – 16 in Edmonton were affected.
- A new Farmers’ Market started this week at the Alberta Avenue community centre. Sharon wrote about it here.
- The City has setup a new non-profit called Fort Edmonton Management Company to operate Fort Edmonton Park.
- So far 66 people have signed up to attend BarCamp Edmonton 2, which is coming up on June 13th. Don’t miss it!
- Nine of the City of Edmonton’s branches have achieved ISO 14001 certification, the world’s most rigorous environmental management system standard.
- Some political news – the province is looking to impose new rules on municipal campaign finances, something Mayor Mandel was none too pleased about. Councillor Don Iveson wrote a good post about it here.
- Speaking of Councillor Iveson – happy birthday! And congratulations to both Don and his wife Sarah on welcoming Dexter into the world.
