Here is my latest update on local media stuff:
- Edmonton’s fourth Meet the Media Tweetup. is taking place on Friday at the TELUS World of Science. Unsurprisingly the event is fully booked and there’s a wait list. If you’re looking to meet the media folks at TWoS, details are here. Marty blogged about the event here.
- As of May 23 you can now watch CTV Edmonton in HD on Bell. Tune into channel 1121!
- Marty Forbes has some media updates in his latest column over at the Edmonton Sun. He’s the man to follow when it comes to local media giving back.
- The finalists for the 31st Annual Western Magazine Awards have been announced. Congratulations to Eighteen Bridges, Alberta Venture, New Trail, AlbertaViews, and all of the other nominees! The awards celebration takes place on June 21 in Vancouver.
- Eighteen Bridges and AlbertaViews are also among the nominees for the National Magazine Awards (pdf).
- Congratulations to Edmonton’s own Tara Gaucher, winner of the Travel+Escape’s My Top 10 Travel Host Search. She’ll be recording in Iceland!
- The Alberta Film & Television Awards (Rosie Awards) were handed out last week, and Edmonton individuals and organizations did well. You can see the full list of winners here.
- The Journal took home four awards from the Society for Features Journalism’s 25th annual Excellence in Feature Writing Contest.
- In the Online Media Awards, the Journal was nominated for its work on the Capital Ex runs and fun package.
- Arisa Cox, host of Big Brother Canada, is the new co-host alongside Ara Andonian of 91.7 The BOUNCE’s new morning show. Listen for them beginning July 2013.
- Ugh. “Less than 24 hours after Goosecam 2.0 went live, it had regained its status as the longest-watched video on the Journal website.” A collective 300 hours. Why can’t we still the Goosecam behind the paywall!?
- I’m getting flashbacks of the edmontonian here: The Wanderer Online has started posting daily recaps.
- FC Edmonton has signed a deal with Rogers and The Score to broadcast six nationally televised live gams and three tape-delay games.
- Shout out to Patrick Nguyen, the summer intern over at Metro!
- You might have heard that Jake Ryan was let go from Virgin Radio a couple weeks ago, but it sounds like he has landed at Fresh FM and will begin doing on-air work at the end of the month (if he hasn’t already).
- You’ve got until Friday to apply to become editor of Alberta Oil magazine.
- Happy belated birthday to 630 CHED’s Andrew Grose!
- Some of you may remember Marg Pullishy, producer for 32 years of the weekly segment “Wednesday’s Child” on CTV Edmonton. Sadly, she passed away on May 16 in Victoria, BC at the age of 68.
- Here’s an article on Golden West Broadcasting Ltd. – their latest station is Fort Saskatchewan’s Mix 107.9 FM.
- TELUS is planning to invest $103 million in new infrastructure and facilities in the Edmonton region this year. TELUS currently claims 712,000 Optik TV customers in the province.
- Are you excited for season two of The Newsroom? I am! It begins July 14. Here’s an overview from Sorkin and others:
You can follow Edmonton media news on Twitter using the hashtag #yegmedia. For a great overview of the global media landscape, check out Mediagazer.
So, what have I missed? What’s new and interesting in the world of Edmonton media? Let me know!
Any insight or numbers on Edm Journal website stats since the paywall? I am dying (but most likely not paying) to know.
Haven’t heard anything, but will find out what I can!
So looking forward to the Newsroom!
Definitely remember Marg…
Great recap, as always. Don’t know how you do it all, but love that you do what you do!
🙂

Surprised it took this long for someone to do a daily look at Edmonton news. It was always very popular back on the edmontonian. (As I trust your weekly notes and Media Mondays would be regular reading for online Edmontonians in the know.)
I think it would have been a way for a traditional newsroom to entrench itself as the centre of local news by having the trust in its own work to be able to point people to other fine work and important stories. But they all missed that opportunity, which has been seized by The Wanderer!
All the Edmonton HD stations (Global, CTV, Citytv, CBC) have been added to Shaw Direct. Bell TV so far has the HD variants of CTV and CBC Edmonton. No currently listings show if Global or Citytv Edmonton is on Bell.
wow! this is a great news. 🙂 Bankruptcy
