Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:
- The Unknown Studio have announced a new crowdfunding campaign on Patreon. They are asking listeners to “put their money where their ears are” so that they can make the show even more successful. Adam and Scott talk about more about it in their latest episode on Pogo CarShare.
- I missed the first Morning News Meetup on Friday, but fortunately Cory Sellar has posted a recap of the event. Sounds like there was a great discussion on user-generated content and its treatment in the newsroom.
- Tyler King writing in The Fort McMurray Today: “There are hatchet jobs, and then there’s the pathetic piece of pseudo-journalism that Global Edmonton ran on our city and an invented link to terrorism on Wednesday night.” He does not mince words.
- Subscribers to the Edmonton Journal received a sample of the new TVtimes last week. After killing the product back in 2012, it seems they are ready to bring it back, for a cost. Print subscribers can now get TVtimes for $3.25 plus tax per month.
- Edmonton-born Tyler Dettling is returning to the city to do the afternoon drive on The Bounce. He replaces Tripp West who is heading back to Ottawa.
- I noticed that a new Meetup group for Alberta-based YouTubers has been launched by Craig Sephton.
- The latest installment of Postscript discusses the Journal’s coverage of the cancelled skating rink at the newly renovated Federal Building. The one before that looked at the challenge of capturing a coyote with a camera.
- Local chef Shane Chartrand of Sage will appear in episode 9 of the current season of Chopped Canada. His episode will air on March 7.
- Edmontonian foodie Kenya Hushagen is going to be a contestant on the new season of Masterchef Canada, which debuts on February 8. Good luck Kenya!
- From Vintage Edmonton, here’s a 10th anniversary reflection at CITV from 1984.
- I missed the tweetup unfortunately, but here’s an interview with Adam Snider on the #yegoldschooltweetup.
- Here’s a profile of Adrienne Lamb, host of CBC TV’s “Our Edmonton”.
- Oilers coach Todd Nelson had a comment take out of context recently that resulted in some incorrect assumptions about blogger/analytics guru Tyler Dellow. Steve Dangle sets the record straight at Sportsnet and says “this is where quotes on Twitter can be so problematic.”
- The latest episode of The Press Gallery podcast plays with a shorter format and includes a video too!
- The St. Albert Gazette is looking for a reporter/photographer to join the team. The deadline to apply is January 23.
- The Edmonton Sun is looking for an editor for its Special Sections department, which includes Homes, Autonet, Eskimos Game Day, and FC Edmonton Match Day.
- Here are the latest social media notes from Linda. Can you believe Facebook is turning 11 in February? Time flies.
- In case you missed it, here is Karen’s latest local blog roundup.
- Here’s another new local web film series called Vacant from Eat ‘M Productions:
- Bit of a scandal out east as Global News anchor Leslie Roberts has resigned following an investigation into undisclosed ties to a PR firm.
- It sounds like Canadians are really into the NFL, with an average audience 11% bigger than last year for the Divisional Playoff Weekend.
- I’m not sure I get the logic on this one, but Amazon is planning to produce original movies for theatrical release starting later this year.
- How’s this for taking on traditional media? YouTube is planning to offer its own halftime show during the Super Bowl.
- I’ve always enjoyed the State of the Union address. Social media, especially Twitter, has continued to play a more prominent role with each passing year and this one will be no different (I mean, they have a trailer!). “This year it’s an extended, multimedia extravaganza that underscores the dramatic evolution in political communication.”
