Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:
- Karen Unland has announced that she is leaving Capital Ideas and the Edmonton Journal to attend the 2015 Beat Business training program at the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism at CUNY. Jeff Samsonow will be taking over her responsibilities at Postmedia. Very exciting, congratulations Karen!
- Don’t miss Karen’s latest roundup of local blog posts. It was another very full week.
- We now know where Jesse Beyer has landed – he is the new chief meteorologist and weather anchor at Global Edmonton. You’ll see him on the Early News at 5 and News Hour at 6 starting in late July. Congrats Jesse!
- Starting this weekend you can catch Ziyah Karmali on 91.7 The Bounce from 12-6pm every weekend.
- It sounds like Leah Holoiday has left Metro Edmonton and will now be working as press secretary for the Minister of Advanced Education.
- As mentioned previously, Marty Klinkenberg is leaving the Journal for the Globe and Mail. Check out the awesome cake they had for him at the Journal!
- Congratulations to CBC Edmonton on winning four national awards for “Aura of Power” including the Don McGillivray award from the Canadian Association of Journalists.
- CTV Edmonton also picked up a couple of RTDNA Canada awards, congrats!
- The Edmonton Sun’s Trevor Robb noticed the very similar Journal and Sun front page headlines recently. Should we read into this, or is it just a coincidence? I’m sure we could find pre-Postmedia-takeover examples of this, but it does seem like the two papers used to go out of their way to have different headlines.
- You’ve no doubt been subjected to Cathal Kelly’s piece in the Globe and Mail by now. Here is Reid Wilkins’ love letter to Kelly in response.
- Edmonton’s High School Brawl won a live pitch competition at the Banff World Media Festival and will be going into production. Parts of the trailer were filmed at the old Edmonton Remand Centre.
- Also pitching at the Banff World Media Festival is KittenTV, a project of Edmonton-based filmmakers. The first season called “Kitten Town” can be found on demand on Telus Optik.
- From Vintage Edmonton: CJCA’s Bob Bradburn’s Review of 1970.
- Accessible Media Inc. is looking for an Assignment Editor to join the team here in Edmonton.
- I believe the deadline has passed unfortunately, but Bell was looking for a Reporter/Producer for CTV Two.
- Heads up: there’s a CJCA/K-97 reunion scheduled for September 13 for anyone who worked at the stations during the sister station years of 1979-1993.
- Here are Linda’s latest social media notes. She highlights “Answer Time”, which is Tumblr’s new competitor to the wildly popular Reddit AMA.
- At WWDC today, Apple announced Apple News, a new personalized feed of news and articles that will replace Newsstand. It will launch in the US, UK, and Australia. “A number of publishers have signed up as launch partners for News, including The Economist, Vanity Fair, Financial Times, Time, Wired, BuzzFeed, Vox, the New York Times, Bloomberg Business, and of course The Verge.”
- Nieman Journalism Lab called it the most important set of Apple announcements in years, while the (excluded) Washington Post took a decidedly less enthusiastic stance.
- According to a study by Alan D. Mutter, one out of every four ventures listed in the Columbia Journalism Review directory since 2010 has failed.
- Dave Winer perfectly captured one of my primary issues with Medium: “When people post to Medium they think about exposure for their ideas today, but imho they should also be thinking about how people are going to find their ideas in the future.”
- Congratulations to 88.1 The One FM, which launched in Parkland County on June 4:
