Local updates from the Media Roundup
Here are a few select updates from today’s Media Roundup, written and curated by Linda Hoang:
- The new look for the downtown Edmonton Public Library has drawn criticism online for how different it looks compared to previous project renderings, and the reaction even received coverage on BBC. Journalist Omar Mouallem tweets there are many unanswered questions he hasn’t seen "answered in media."
- CTV Edmonton’s Nahreman Issa tweeted a heckling incident, "as a reminder that people still act this way towards the media."
- A new Edmonton scholarship has been created in honour of Somali-Canadian reporter Hodan Nalayeh.
- CTV Edmonton’s Sean Amato shared a throwback photo showing what TV footage used to be recorded on, compared to today.
- Gwendoline Hunka shared a thank you to those in the Edmonton communications industry for taking the time to "talk with juniors."

Media-related updates from elsewhere
Here are some non-local media links that I found interesting this week:
- The Knight Foundation is investing $50 million to "better understand how technology is transforming our democracy and the way we receive and engage with information."
- Vox Media and The Washington Post are going head-to-head on publishing platforms, with Chorus and Arc battling it out for market share.
- Here’s a great long read from the New York Times: The Great Race to Rule Streaming TV.
- As the father of an 18-month old, I am certainly intrigued by the lack of evidence to support the idea that too much screen time hurts our kids.
- Poynter looks at how mankind and the media came together on the surface of the moon 50 years ago.
