• The Edmonton Journal’s Karen Kleiss and Calgary Herald’s Darcy Henton made Alberta Venture’s list of Alberta’s 50 most influential people.
• The latest edition of Edmonton Woman magazine is out now! They’re looking for a local woman with a unique story to feature in their next edition.
• Here’s a feature from Edmonton Woman’s latest issue: TSN’s Natasha Staniszewski and her journey to the anchor spot. She got her start at the University of Alberta, did the radio and television program at NAIT, and covered sports at CTV Edmonton for a while.
• Emil Tiedemann’s “I Heart Edmonton” blog has turned five. Congrats!
• Karen’s latest roundup of local blog posts covers a lot of ground. I’m always amazed at how much is being written by local bloggers.
• Tim Schutz is leaving CKEA (95.7 CRUZ FM) at the end of August, which means the station is on the lookout for a new Program Director. Here is the job posting.
• From Vintage Edmonton, here’s a look at the radio dial back in 1958.
• For a look at everything that happened in the world of social media last week, check out Linda’s links.
• You know how media traffic reports are all vehicle-centric? What if they covered bike commute conditions instead? You might get this:

• From MJ Aherne, here’s Leonard Nimoy doing a commercial for Edmonton Telephones pagers. Who knew?
• Here are some other oldies: CISN aircheck from 2001, 630 CHED memories, CKRA aircheck.
• HOT 107 has announced that Jake Ryan will move from nights to host the afternoon drive.
• I’m fascinated by the possibilities of drones for media. Here’s a feature on the new eye in the sky in the Columbia Journalism Review. There are some local videos on YouTube, such as this one of the newly lit High Level Bridge, but nothing from mainstream media as far as I am aware.
• Great piece in the June edition of The Walrus – Nobody’s a Critic: Who holds journalists to account in Canada?
• I missed this last month: Astral is launching Out-of-Home in Edmonton and Calgary by purchasing Macdonald Outdoor and adding new digital billboards. They aim to have 21 large format screens across the province.
• Shaw Media has applied to the CRTC for the right to launch a “hybrid local/national” English-language news channel. It would be in the same category as the CBC News Network, CTV News Channel, and Sun News Network.
• There are threats that some Globe and Mail employees might split away and form a new publication, called Globe Nation. That would be interesting.
• I’ve seen a couple of John Oliver’s videos on YouTube, and was struck by how different they are than most clips from late night TV. Here’s a good overview of what ‘Last Week Tonight’ is trying to accomplish.

• Congratulations to SAM, which launched to the public today! SAM is a social media asset management system that supports team curation and collaboration. SAM is located at Startup Edmonton and was founded by James Neufeld. Follow SAM on Twitter and check out their introductory video here:

• Outgoing Edmonton Sun editor-in-chief Steve Serviss is off to Kingston after this week. He was here for about two and a half years. Check out this farewell cartoon from Chad Huculak. Best of luck Steve!
• Christine Chomiak is one of the victims of CBC’s cuts – last week was her last. She also got a farewell cartoon, from Matthew Kupfer.
• I don’t know about you, but I’m excited that Elise Stolte is back after a year on maternity leave. Congrats and welcome back Elise!
• The July 2014 edition of Avenue Edmonton features a different take on the 25 Best Things to Eat list (and Mayor Iveson on the cover). Instead of having judges select the items, Avenue asked 25 prominent Edmontonians what their favorite dishes are. Included on the list are Global Edmonton’s Jennifer Crosby (she enjoys grilled Alberta beef flat iron steak) and Mike Sobel (he chose sate beef soup).

• Cool, Transcend Coffee’s Poul Mark is going to be doing monthly features on coffee on CBC’s Edmonton AM. Here’s his first.
• These days, nothing goes unnoticed! Copper & Blue’s Derek Zona caught TSN with an inappropriate tweet on the crawl. They quickly removed it and apologized.
• Wow, here’s an old school aircheck for 630 CHED!
• In her latest social media column, Allison Salz talks about sexting and the need for education.
• Season 3 of Inglorious Hipsters has come to an end. Good time to catch up on the archives!
• The latest episode of The Unknown Studio features former Gateway news editor Cosanna Preston.
• CBC announced plans to cut between 1000 and 1500 jobs by 2020 in an effort to make the organization more sustainable and financially stable. The Globe has more on the story. Postmedia’s Scott Stinson says CBC’s broadcast days may be numbered.
• Find out what has been happening in the world of social media with Linda’s latest notes.
• This article caught my eye: Newspapers That Aren’t Dying. It seems there are some very successful immigrant presses out there. I wonder if that holds for Edmonton?

• Dave Breakenridge is the new editor-in-chief at the Edmonton Sun. He was formerly the online editor of the Calgary Sun, though he got his start in Edmonton as an anchor at 630 CHED. His brother Rob wished him congrats on Twitter!
• The Edmonton Eskimos have decided that members of the media are no longer welcome in the dressing room. Predictably, many journalists are upset. Here’s another take from John MacKinnon: “It’s the reasoning behind the policy change that doesn’t hold up to even mild scrutiny,” he says. Here’s what Terry Jones had to say.
• Like airchecks? You’re in luck this week! Here are vintage airchecks (generally a demonstration recording) from: CFRM-AM 1260 (1976), CJCA, CHED (1974-78), CHED (1977), Power 92 FM (1993), K-97 (1981), and CFCW.
• Is the media going to get increased access to Daryl Katz now that the arena is moving ahead? He’s headlining E-Town in September, an unusually public appearance.
• Douglas Mitchell is hosting the new Shaw TV show Edmonton Unplugged, which features live performances by local musicians. You can check out the show at 2pm and 11:30pm daily on Channel 10, or online.
• Hot 107 FM is looking for a new Program Director.
• The latest edition of The Pulp is now online! One of the features this time is on hackers.
• There’s a new NDP bill aimed at ending the exploitation of unpaid interns in Canada, such as 22-year-old Andy Ferguson, who died in 2011 in a head-on collision after working excessive hours as an unpaid intern at a radio station here in Edmonton.
• Here’s another entry in the Reporter on the Run series by Otiena Ellwand.
• What do you think, is a rebrand for one of the Rogers radio stations in Edmonton on the way?
• Can you believe they are already at #35? Don’t miss the latest Social Media Breakfast event, taking place on Friday, June 27 at Startup Edmonton from 8:30am to 10:30am.
• After just seven months on CTV News Channel, Kevin Newman Live has been cancelled. Sounds like the format was poorly received, though no official reason for the cancellation was given.
• Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy was sentenced to seven years in prison by an Egyptian court. The Ottawa Citizen editorial board tackles the issue.
• Here’s a glimpse into the NYTimes CMS, known as Scoop.

• In case you missed it, the spring radio ratings are out and NOW! 102.3 FM is back on top, this time with a sizeable lead over second place 630 CHED. See more stats here.
• Five writers with the Edmonton Journal have been awarded prizes by the Society for Features Journalism. Congrats!
• Congrats also Omar Mouallem! His story in Eighteen Bridges titled “The Kingdom of Haymour” was named Best Feature Article in the 2014 PWAC Awards.
• YEG Fitness is launching a digital magazine with a special event taking place on July 30.
• The Nation Network, which runs OilersNation and a bunch of other sites, has brought in Brian Sutherby as editor-in-chief. He’ll be establishing an American arm of the network down in Califorina.
• Here’s a good discussion and some important questions on the “wrap” that covered the Edmonton Journal a couple weeks ago. Is that particular ad vehicle doing more harm than good?
• Effective July 1, print subscription rates for the Edmonton Journal are increasing. Monday to Saturday delivery will go to $30 per month, while Friday & Saturday delivery will increase $2 to $22 per month (that’s for Metro Edmonton).
• From a couple weeks ago: here is the Unknown Studio’s recording from BT Edmonton’s Bloggers Week.
• Maurice asks, why does the media care what’s trending on Twitter? It’s the new streeter.
• Bruce Hogle delivered a commencement speech at the University of Alberta recently. He’s still storytelling at 85!
• Edmontonian Lisa Gilroy is the host of YTV’s new short Undercover High. Her job sounds pretty fun – she gets to help prank students who are giving their teachers a hard time!
• Anyone have a 1977 Klondike Days media pin? Al Girard is trying to complete a collection.
• Many members of the local media participated in the annual ETS Roadeo event last week. The competition aims to offer insight into the daily reality of bus drivers.
• From May: frustration with the local media and their apparent unwillingness to give credit to the local newspaper in St. Paul.
• Congrats to Tanara McLean on two years with BT Edmonton!
• Here’s a video of Amber Bracken receiving her National Newspaper Award at the Edmonton Journal.
• Global Edmonton launched its fall lineup at Mercer Tavern with special guest Paul Reiser!

• The next Capital Ideas Edmonton event takes place on Wednesday at the Edmonton Journal!
• The next Art of Conversation, hosted by Rob Christie, Audie Lynds, and Graham Hicks, is taking place on June 30 at 4:30pm at Telus Field. Should be a fun night in the Home Plate Lounge, followed by the Edmonton Prospects vs. Regina Red Sox game.
• Some sad news in the media world: Casey Kasem died Sunday at the age of 82. He launched American Top 40 in 1970 and hosted until he retired in 2009.

• Things are changing at The Wanderer Online! Editor and co-founder Emerson Csorba is passing the torch to Blue Knox. You can read her first piece as incoming editor here. And if you’re interested in getting involved, they are now accepting applications for editorial positions.
• Guess who was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame on Friday? Hall of famer Rod Phillips, who spent 37 years as “voice” of the Oilers.
• Don’t miss Karen’s latest roundup of local blog posts.
• Global Edmonton has surpassed 100,000 likes on its Facebook page, an impressive milestone! The next closest local media property is 102.3 Now! Radio with just under 95,000 likes.
• Congratulations to Karen Kleiss, Stephanie Coombs, Paula Simons, Shaughn Butts on winning National Newspaper Awards for the Edmonton Journal. Former Edmonton Sun employee Amber Bracken also won an award, which the Journal celebrated with her!

• The City of Edmonton’s auditor says his organization needs to do more work updating and overseeing its social media presence. Really? What does the City’s auditor know about social media? For the record, I think the folks who run @CityofEdmonton are doing a great job.
• Would have been great to have been a fly on the wall at Alberta Primetime’s recent strategy session. I wonder what is coming up?
• The next Meet the Media is coming up on June 13. If you reserved a ticket but can no longer attend, go ahead and cancel it – there’s a growing waitlist!
• Social media strategist Adam Rozenhart was among those recognized with a 2014 Alumni Award from the University of Alberta. No doubt he has the best reaction video though:

• Speaking of Adam, he and Unknown Studio co-host Scott C. Bourgeois closed out BT Edmonton’s Bloggers Week on Friday. Looks like they had fun!
• Kathy Kirby, a well-known member of Edmonton’s music scene, was recently diagnosed with cancer. A benefit concert called “Be Here Now” has been organized for June 10-11. Kirby has written for both See Magazine and GigCity.
• Alberta’s NDP Opposition is looking for a Communications Officer. The deadline to apply is June 16.
• The Edmonton International Airport conducted a full-scale emergency response exercise last week, and Twitter did indeed play a role. But that’s pretty much where the article stopped being interesting or accurate.
• On Friday, the local media were invited to get in the game to help promote the World Triathlon Grand Final. Looks like they had fun sprinting and doing a few laps on a tricycle in front of City Hall.
• The Edmonton Sun’s social media columnist Allison Salz says that hashtag campaigns are a mixed bag. They promote discussion, but do they actually result in change?

I was thrilled to have the opportunity to kick off BT Bloggers Week this morning on Breakfast Television Edmonton. This was my fourth time participating in the week-long-affair, and I’ve enjoyed it every single time. You can see the first and second segments here – we talked about What the Truck?!, downtown, and more.

I was also really happy that my friend and mentor Karen Unland could join me! Karen has recently started blogging again, using ShareEdmonton as a source to see what local bloggers are talking about. You can catch our joint segment here. And here is Karen’s latest post.

Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• Could CBC kill the 6 o’clock evening news in Edmonton? Could they replace it with a province-wide show that would serve both Edmonton and Calgary? Can anyone unseat Global Edmonton? Fascinating piece on these questions and more in the Toronto Star last week.
• Postmedia last week launched a redesigned Ottawa Citizen, calling it “the first step toward the reimagination of all Postmedia products.” They call their new four-platform strategy “groundbreaking”. Really? Having print, web, tablet, and smartphone versions is groundbreaking? Ok. I guess we’ll see what the execution is like, because I thought they already had those things. I want to see them find success, but that sort of fluff just turns me right off.
• I also think the way they describe the four different products is horribly misguided – they seem to suggest that “Postmedia’s best journalism” is only appropriate for print, whereas the smartphone app is “designed for the skimming, sharing, mobile audience.” Apparently no one at Postmedia is paying attention to the trend toward mobile. For instance, more than half of Buzzfeed’s traffic comes from mobile devices, including to stories that are thousands of words long.
• That said, I do like the look of the new Ottawa Citizen. Here is some further information on the changes. I look forward to the rollout across other Postmedia properties.
• If you can believe it, Councillor Mike Nickel is trying to crowdfund a new television show that would be called “To the Point: With Mike Nickel”. So far he has raised $100 out of his $6,500 goal.
• Congratulations to the Journal’s Ryan Jackson and Karen Kleiss, recognized for their work at the News Photographers Association of Canada’s Pictures of the Year contest. They placed third in the “Team Multimedia Project of the Year” category.
• The Journal also won an International Newsmedia Marketing Association award for Gastropost.
• Imran Gill, the Social Media Specialist at Northlands, was one of the winners at the 14th annual You’re Welcome Edmonton Awards. Is that the first time that someone in a social media role has been recognized? Thanks Steven for the heads up!
• Friday, May 23 was the final day at Global Edmonton for Ross Neitz. He is moving on to the University of Alberta. “I’ll miss storytelling the most,” he said.
• May 18 was the last day at Global Edmonton for Shannon Greer, who left for Global Calgary.

• Jay Runham did an interview with Dookie Squad, a web series created by Angela Palmer.
• Did you enjoy the Edmonton Journal’s Goosecam? I enjoyed this take on the annual tradition: “It is an annual experiment by the Journal to examine the effects of round the clock anonymous surveillance on the avian brain. This year’s unlucky participant, Patience, has developed the same paranoia exhibited by mother geese in previous years.”
• The next Art of Conversation takes place tomorrow night at Tavern 1903. The event starts at 4:30pm and is hosted by Rob Christie, Audie Lynds, and Graham Hicks.
• Have you heard of YEGWEEKEND? Sounds interesting: “YEG Weekened, an interactive storyworld for locals and visitors, launches this Fall with 48 pages of augmented awesomeness.”
• Did you miss The Yeggies? Here’s a video recap from Lincoln Ho.
• The Edmonton Journal is looking to hire a Breaking News Reporter. The deadline to apply is May 31.
• In case you were wondering, Steve Zimmerman resigned from Newcap Radio and his post on K-97 as of May 2. “I’m burnt out & 3:30AM just doesn’t work for me anymore,” he wrote.
• The big news in Canadian media over the weekend was the death of former CBC anchor Knowlton Nash.
• The stories about Jill Abramson’s abrupt firing from the New York Times keep coming. This one looks at the gap between what female and male journalists actually make.

• Congratulations to all the winners of the 2013 Yeggies which took place on Friday evening! The Local Good took home “Best in Edmonton” and Baconhound took home “Best Twitter Persona”. It was a fun night!

• Don’t miss this fun interview with Brittney Le Blanc by Phil Wilson (aka Baconhound).
• And Brittney, this link is for you: one third of the roughly 400 reporters at the New York Times are women.
• Edmonton Journal reporter Otiena Ellwand is training to run in the Edmonton Marathon on August 24, and she’s planning to blog about her progress along the way. It’s called Reporter on the Run, and the fun video at that link was produced by Ryan Jackson.

• Also leaving Global Edmonton is Shane Jones, who will be joining PCL as their new Media Relations Specialist in two weeks.
• The Yeggies are coming up on Friday evening! Get your tickets here.
• Graham Thomson on the return of Alison Redford to the legislature: “This was Redford’s first appearance in the assembly since she resigned as premier March 23 and the media were after her like seagulls chasing a fishing trawler. And all we got were scraps.”
• The nominees for the 37th annual National Magazine Awards were announced recently. Alberta Views and Eighteen Bridges both picked up a number of nominations. The winners will be revealed in Toronto on June 6.

• Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at Global Edmonton with Lorraine Mansbridge.

• Edmonton-born filmmaker Dave Walker was found dead in Cambodia last week. He went missing back in February.
• Saturday, May 3 was World Press Freedom Day as designated by the United Nations. Twitter encouraged users to tweet their observations and thoughts using the hashtag #PressFreedom.
• As you know, Rob Ford was back in the news over the last week or so. And this time, media outlets are ponying up some cash in exchange for photos. From the Globe and Mail: Why we published the Rob Ford photos and The case for paying for Rob Ford photographs. Gawker was also approach and wrote about their interactions with the seller.

• Former Alberta Premier Alison Redford has been in the news lately for her absence from the legislative assembly, and now the local media is being criticized for “verging on tabloid journalism” with their coverage. It does seem a bit over the top. Anyone in her position would need some time to re-energize. That said, she hasn’t done herself any favors by perpetuating the culture of “entitlement” with the way the situation has been handled. What do you think?
• I was very surprised to hear that Julie Matthews is leaving Global Edmonton to become a senior investigator with Service Alberta. Her last day is Friday. Best of luck Julie!
• Congratulations to all the nominees and winners at tonight’s Mayor’s Celebration for the Arts! Prairie Dog Film + Television took home a couple of awards, and CJSR won the John Poole Award for Promotion of the Arts.
• Jonny Sullivan confirmed on Thursday that he was let go from Corus and 92.5 Fresh FM. It’s clear he has formed a connection with Edmonton: “I hope that I can stay here in Edmonton. People talk shit about this city all the time. I have no idea what they have to bitch about. The soul of this city is its people.” Best of luck Jonny!
• Volume 51 Issue 15 was the final issue of Folio, the staff newsletter at the University of Alberta that has been published for nearly 50 years, amassing more than 1,700 issues. Here’s the final issue in PDF. Technology has changed and so must Folio, but thankfully we still celebrate milestones with cake.
• Congratulations to the Edmonton Journal and the Calgary Herald on being named finalists for the 2013 Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism. Their series called Fatal Care earned the nomination. The winners will be announced on June 11.
• This looks like a neat tradition: Purple Thursday is a thing at the Edmonton Journal.
• Sportsnet will broadcast the 2014 World Triathlon Grand Final live from Edmonton in August.
• Sonic Boom has announced its lineup for the 2014 edition, now expanded to three days! Looks like Sonic 102.9 FM has another hit on their hands.

• Speaking of The Gateway, classes and exams are over, and for some journalists that means goodbye.
