Here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• The 10th annual ATCO Edmonton Sun Christmas Charity Auction was a big success, raising more than $200,000 for four local charities. You can see all of the bids on local media here. It looks like dinner at Outback with Tencer and Grose was the highest at $1,601! UPDATE: It’s not under the media section, but dinner with Ryan Jespersen & Kari Skelton went for $2,600!
• After four years as co-host, Jennifer Martin is stepping down from Alberta Primetime this month to become Shaw’s new manager of programming for northern Alberta. Here’s the job posting for her position.
• Erin Isfeld did her final newscast for a while last week as she is now on maternity leave. Carmen Leibel will be taking over at 5pm. Congratulations Erin on your new baby!
• Arts & Entertainment reporter Amanda Ash is leaving the Edmonton Journal at the end of the week to join EPCOR as Digital Media Specialist.
• Local media sure love to have fun with Halloween!
  • Here is Global Edmonton’s Mike Sobel and Daintre Christensen dressed up as Sonny and Cher.
  • Here is the BT Edmonton crew all dressed up!
  • Here is CTV Edmonton’s Morning Live team with an Anchorman inspired look.
• The Edmonton Journal is looking to hire a City Editor. The deadline to apply is November 15. Current City Editor Dave Howell has updated his Twitter profile to say, “looking forward to next EJ assignment.”
• Here’s a great Social Media Spotlight column from Linda focused on Vintage Edmonton.
• In case you missed it, the November issue of Boyle McCauley News is now online!
• The Edmonton-created show Felt Up, “the world’s first reality series entirely populated with puppets,” debuted on Bite TV on October 21.
• The Sherwood Park/Strathcona County News is looking for two multimedia reporters/photographers. The deadline to apply is November 8.
• I meant to link to this in my last update: Lynda Steele is gonna make it after all! It’s great to hear that she is doing well in Vancouver.
• Looking forward to the 2014 Winter Olympics? CBC has announced its coverage plans.
• Do you have thoughts on the future of TV in Canada? The CRTC is hosting a conversation about that very topic. The online forum is open until November 22.

Hard to believe it has been nearly a month since I last did a Media Monday news roundup! The election was obviously my focus. Anyway, here’s my latest update on local media stuff:

• I’m sure by now you’ve heard the big news from CTV Edmonton’s Carrie Doll – she’ll be retiring from broadcasting at the end of March 2014. Here’s a video of the announcement. There’s lots of time left, but let me say congratulations and good luck Carrie! It’ll be interesting to see who sits alongside Darryl McIntyre in April.
• Also moving on to new challenges is Global Edmonton’s Chris Hayden, known as the Global 1 traffic reporter. Here’s a Q&A that Global did with him.
• Congratulations to CJSR – they cracked $100,000 for this year’s FunDrive.
• The first meeting of the Edmonton Journal’s new Community Advisory Board took place on October 10. It’s a mostly new-look board, with just four returning members. Great group of people and I look forward to hearing more about the impact they’re having on the paper.
• For instance, editor Margo Goodhand wrote today that the Community Advisory Board helped to convince the Journal to send a journalist to Jordan and Lebanon. I don’t agree with the decision, but I’m glad to hear the board is able to have an influence.
• Do you think newspapers should continue the perhaps out-of-date tradition of endorsing candidates for political office? I criticized both the Journal and the Sun on Twitter for not endorsing a mayoral candidate in this election. Sarah O’Donnell blogged about the topic today. I started writing something, but shifted my focus to election day efforts before I could finish it. Maybe I’ll pick that up again.
• Mark Connolly is now the permanent host of Edmonton AM on CBC Edmonton and Portia Clark is taking over Radio Active.
• Ratings from BBM Canada show that CTV Edmonton “more than doubled Global’s coverage across the W18-49 demo with a 7.8 rating” on election night. They also saw a 165% increase in traffic to their website.
• Is there anything Emerson Csorba can’t do? At the beginning of the month he published an e-book called Leading U: Inspirational Stories from UAlberta Alumni & Students.
• No word on how regular a guest she’ll be, but here’s a post from Linda on her Alberta Primetime Pop Culture Panel experience. Oh, and she has started a series of posts called Social Media Notes. Great stuff!
• Julie Nolan has announced she is joining CTV Edmonton as an anchor beginning November 12.
• In case you missed it, Jay Runham did an interview with Adam Rozenhart, aka Bingofuel. They touch on Google+, The Yeggies, and more.
• Last week the Edmonton Journal launched Gastropost Edmonton, building on a Capital Ideas-like project that started in Toronto. If you’re a food lover, try a food mission today!
• With a letter of intent signed on September 30, the University of Alberta and MacEwan University agreed to collaborate on offering enhanced communications degrees.
• Speaking of communications, Alberta’s NDP Opposition is looking for a Communications Coordinator to handle media relations and oversee the implementation of a social media strategy.
• I wonder what happened there? Mike McGuire is no longer with The One FM in Leduc.
• Here’s the first column from Allison Salz who took over the social media column at the Edmonton Sun (now called “Grain of Salz”). She wrote about social media’s impact on the election last week.
• The Alberta Magazine Awards take place in March and they’re looking for judges.
• The Journal has been nominated for six EPPY Awards, sponsored by the American magazine Editor & Publisher. The winners will be announced on October 30.
• I didn’t know there was a Cottage Life TV network, but apparently it has a new show called Selling Big focused on Edmonton’s Ritchie Bros., which sold a record $1 billion of heavy equipment last year.
• The Edmonton Sun’s Christmas Charity Auction is back, with bidding starting at 9am tomorrow morning. Want to enjoy a meal with your favorite media personalities? Now’s your chance!
• Beginning November 12, Stuart McIntosh will take over as the Program Director for the Alberta NW Division of Newcap Radio. He’ll be based in Edson.
• I wanted to make sure to link to this from a few weeks ago because it is just so crazy. Fox News hopes its ridiculous newsroom will connect with younger viewers, but I think they’re crazy. If I do watch TV news, it certainly isn’t for the giant tablets I see on set.
• Here’s a long but very interesting back-and-forth between the New York Times’ Bill Keller and Glenn Greenwald who broke the Edward Snowden story.

• Linda Hoang was let go from the Edmonton Sun today. They are “making changes to columns” apparently. Unfortunate news, but ultimately it’s the Sun’s loss. I’m sure Linda will be snapped up by someone quickly! Either way, she promises to “continue to tell stories of Edmontonians doing awesome things with social media” through her blog. Here’s her final column, on engaging voters.
• I also wanted to mention Linda’s previous column on Brittney Le Blanc’s quest to meet 5,000 people in 365 days. “It’s a truly unique social experiment reinforced by regular and social networking and something that could have easily failed but didn’t.”
• And another Linda item: she’s doing the Alberta Primetime #PopCulturePanel!
• For a little while, Paula Simons had a parody account on Twitter called, appropriately, @Perlatiks. Sadly the account has since been suspended. I love Paula’s reaction to it:

• Did you have problems receiving your copy of the Journal recently? It could be because they had some challenges with the new printing presses.
• Here’s an update on some AM radio dial changes taking place here in Edmonton: CKUA’s AM signal will soon be turned off, and TEAM 1260 will now be TSN Radio. Here are some additional details from TSN on the switch.
• There are two positions open at Metro Edmonton: Special Sections editor and Reporter/Photographer.
• The Edmonton Broadcasters Club Fall Luncheon is taking place on October 16 at the Norwood Legion and features Danny Hooper as the guest speaker.
• This is great: Busy control room as NAIT NewsWatch students record the first newscast of the semester!
• Congratulations to Chris Scheetz who won a cookie eating contest that I and some other local personalities competed in for charity. He won by eating five cookies!

• There are two new additions to the CTV Edmonton team to mention! Kimberly Wynn joins on October 15 to do the traffic for CTV Morning Live, and Sarah Richter joins tomorrow from Regina.

• Margo Goodhand is the new editor-in-chief at the Edmonton Journal. She was previously the editor-in-chief at the Winnipeg Free Press, a position she held from 2007 to 2012. Here’s what she tweeted when the news was announced:

• The next day this piece appeared in the Winnipeg Free Press (not strictly related I suppose, but Margo is credited with transforming the Free Press “from being primarily a print-based operation into a 24/7 news organization with a heavy online presence” so I found the timing curious). “If you picked up a paper copy of the Free Press today, you have a paper unlike any that has rolled off our presses in the 141 years we have been publishing.” Basically they’re using augmented reality via a company called Blippar. Kind of reminds me a little bit of the Journal’s adoption of ScanLife back in 2010.
• Margo’s predecessor, Lucinda Chodan, was spotted in the Gazette recently!
• There has been a fascinating back-and-forth between Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Sun News personality Ezra Levant over the last few days. The latest is a statement from Nenshi. Though I question whether this battle is worth Nenshi’s time to fight, I do like that once he’s in, he’s in.
• Marty Forbes has a solid recap of the latest moves in local radio and television. He notes: “CBC and CKUA are the only media properties that now operate in the quickly rebuilding downtown core and both are just steps away from the best concerts, plays, movies, festivals, and the new arena/entertainment complex while the rest of the media are in the burbs now!” As pointed out by Bruce below and others previously, The Journal, CityTV, Metro, and World FM all operate out of downtown.
• In November 2011, 22-year-old media intern Andy Ferguson died when his car crossed the centre line and hit a gravel truck head-on. His family is convinced the incident occurred because he was being exploited as an intern at Astral Media’s local radio stations The Bear and Virgin Radio. This CBC article covers the story well, and includes a statement from Bell Media and NAIT (where he was a student).
• James Gruff Gushnowski replaces Danny Hooper as the new co-host of the CFCW morning show.
• The Local Good is looking for a Blog Coordinator to join the team. The deadline to apply is September 18.
• Alberta Primetime is working on a new look!
• In case you missed it: The Wanderer has expanded with the launch of The Young Wanderer. Here’s the introductory post.
• On her journey to the top of rock n’ roll radio: Edmonton Woman Magazine profiles 100.3 The Bear’s Gillian Foote.
• CTV Edmonton’s Laura Lowe is moving on to become Communications & Education Manager at the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council. Yesterday (or possibly Friday) was her last day.
• I got a kick out of Lesley Primeau’s Twitter page, where her bio reads “Unemployed Radio Star looking for a signal.” Careful though Lesley, that domain is unregistered. And yes, you should drop the “AndGrose” from your name.

• Former Edmonton Journal editor George Stout died in hospital on July 18 after long-term health problems. His father was an editor at the Edmonton Bulletin. Really interesting article about “a gifted storyteller with family roots in Strathcona.”
• Don’t forget the Edmonton chapter of the Online News Association launches this Thursday at the Mercer Tavern at 7pm.
• The latest Giants of Edmonton mural will be revealed tomorrow at noon at Capilano Centre. It honors five local sports announcers: Ernie Afaganis, Bryan Hall, Al McCann, Rod Phillips, and John Short.
• Here’s an open memo to the BuzzFeed team from Founder and CEO Jonah Peretti. I like the approach, and it’s interesting to read just how ambitious BuzzFeed is.

• Kerry Powell took to Facebook to post some thoughts about getting laid off at the Journal. “My next job, whatever it is, will have a hard act to follow. But I’m excited to figure out what it could be and, in time, to leap back in to the workplace.”
• Congratulations to Elise Stolte, now on maternity leave from the Edmonton Journal after the birth of Marc Evan! He’s so cute!

• Ward 11 candidate Mujahid Chak was the founder of the first Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi radio show in Edmonton and was a founding member of CKER Radio (101.7 World FM).
• I saw the new Shaw store in Calgary when I was there a couple of weeks ago, and now there’s one here in Edmonton at Southgate Mall.
• This is without question the best thing I’ve read about the now infamous Miley Cyrus performance at last night’s MTV Video Music Awards. You can always count on The Onion to tell it like it is. Honorable mention to the Globe and Mail for Hannah Montana’s obituary.

Today at lunch a handful of local media personalities gathered in Churchill Square for a fun ping pong doubles tournament! I was fortunate enough to be paired with Citytv’s Ryan Jespersen, though we lost to 630 CHED’s Scott Johnston and CBC’s Mark Connolly. Over on the other table, the Edmonton Journal’s Brittney Le Blanc and Metro’s Ryan Tumilty were defeated by CTV’s Graham Neil and the Edmonton Sun’s Linda Hoang. In the final game, it was Scott and Mark that took the victory. Good game guys!

The media tournament was just the warm-up of course – the main event was Mayor Stephen Mandel versus EEDC CEO Brad Ferguson. The mayor was playing in support of the Abbottsfield Recreational Centre Society, while Brad chose to support Junior Achievement. The audience was encouraged to wager loonies or toonies on the winner, with all the proceeds going to their respective charities. Donovan Workun emceed the event and did a fantastic job of keeping it entertaining. In the end, Brad was the winner by two points!

• Ok this isn’t local, but it’s scary stuff so I’m starting with it. Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger’s latest column shows just how far UK officials are willing to go to stop further reporting on the Snowden leaks. There’s an absolute ton of coverage of this story at Mediagazer.
• You’ll recall from a couple weeks ago that today was the start of big changes on 630 CHED. Tencer and Grose began today, as did the afternoon show with J’lyn Nye and Mark Scholz.

• Speaking of Scholz, he’s finally on Twitter: welcome Mark!
• Here’s an interview J’lyn and Mark did with CTV Morning Live about the new show.
• Heather McIntyre will be leaving Metro Edmonton at the end of next week. After three years, she has decided to accept a role in communications and marketing at EPL. Congrats Heather!
• Here’s a Gig City feature on former journalist Scott McKeen, currently running for council in ward 6.
• The Journal launched its slimmer, shorter format today. They’re in transition over the next two weeks, after which the changes will be permanent across the city. The paper will then be solely printed by Great West Newspapers in St. Albert.
• Interesting approach from the Edmonton Journal this weekend:

• Here are a couple of media-related entries from Vintage Edmonton: 630 CHED Launch (1993) (new format anyway), and CJCA Shuts Down (1993).
• Linda Hoang in the Edmonton Sun last week: “We have a YouTube star in our midst, Edmonton.” Great story about Daniela Andrade.
• Grant Ainsley is providing media relations training on September 24 at the AGA.
• Undercover Boss has come to Edmonton! Northlands CEO Richard Andersen filmed an episode in March. It will air September 26 on W Network.
• Here’s a new publication I recently came across: Marker. Anyone know anything about it?
• Jake Ryan is back on the radiowaves in the evenings on HOT 107.
• Just a few days left to apply for the editor-in-chief position at the Edmonton Journal. It’ll be very interesting to see who fills the role.
• Twitter is now displaying headlines underneath tweets on permalink pages. The headlines are basically reciprocal links for sites that embed the tweet (though it’s not clear if all sites embedding a tweet will be included). Another step closer to becoming a news organization?
• It’s a bit long, but I enjoyed this video: Print Is Not Dead.

• Kerry Powell was let go by the Edmonton Journal on Thursday. She was the Director of Digital Products. Appropriately she hasn’t been shy about sharing the experience online, expressing sadness and even tweeting photos of her exit. It certainly sounds like the decision was a surprise. No word on where Kerry will go next, but I have no doubt she’ll have her pick of opportunities. Here’s her TEDxEdmonton talk on The Future of News.

• It’s an odd decision. Assuming the Journal and Postmedia understand the importance of digital to their future, then the only logical reason to let Kerry go would be if they felt someone else was a better fit. If that’s the case, then I’d expect them to bring someone on board who lacks a traditional media background (Kerry was a journalist & editor for more than a decade at the Journal before taking on digital). Another possibility is that Postmedia is planning to centralize digital, which I’m not sure is wise. Of course, there could be some sort of internal politicking going on too, but that seems unlikely given that the Journal is currently without a publisher or editor-in-chief.
• Rick Harp’s last day as host of Edmonton AM on CBC was today. He’s returning to Winnipeg to reunite with his family. Best of luck Rick, can’t wait to see what you’re up to next!

• Are you a fan of Edmonton expat Mike Winters? Well only for Edmontonians, Andy has a bunch of Cartoon Machine comics and magnets to sell.
• Breakfast Television recently got rid of the comfy living room feel resulting in a bit of backlash on Facebook! But if you enjoyed the couch, fear not – BT Edmonton will be unveiling a new set on September 9.
• After 24 years, Edmonton Journal editor and reporter Rick McConnell is retiring.
• Global Edmonton is the second local news organization to crack the 70,000 likes barrier on Facebook. Here are the stats as of mid-June.

• Thomasean Vernon has joined Global Edmonton as a reporter. His debut was Friday. He was most recently with Global Regina.

• Are you sick of all the stories about the 25th anniversary of the Gretzky trade? Well here’s a media related one from NHL.com. “Had it happened today, it probably would have played out online in a matter of minutes. Instead, it took a lot longer.”
• Last week the CRTC rejected an application from Sun News to be forced onto basic digital television subscriptions in Canada. The channel currently loses about $17 million per year. But, a proposal from the CRTC to force distributors to offer all news channels could change the equation.

Here is my latest update on local media stuff:

• Let’s start this update with a recap of the big changes that Corus has been making recently. We now know who will be taking over the spot vacated by the Rutherford Show on 630 CHED – Dan Tencer and Andrew Grose will begin hosting Tencer and Grose on August 19. J’lyn Nye will be taking over the afternoon show from 2-6pm on 630 CHED with Mark Scholz that same day (her final day with Fresh FM was July 26). The surprise casualty in all the changes? Lesley Primeau has been let go.

• Here is GigCity’s take on all the changes.
• With Dan Tencer leaving his popular Inside Sports show as a result of the changes, David Staples is wondering who Edmonton’s top sports radio host is? The results thus far have Bob Stauffer on top, followed closely by Jason Gregor.
• Over at Fresh FM, Dani Rohs will be joining Jonny Sullivan to host FRESH Mornings, also beginning August 19. Jake Ryan’s last day with Fresh FM will be August 18. He begins doing evenings on HOT 107 the following day.
• This is older news, but Sun Media decided a few weeks ago to stop publishing 24 Hours here in Edmonton. It’s part of cost-cutting measures expected to save the organization about $55 million per year. Like Dose before it, 24 Hours just couldn’t seem to gain a foothold here against Metro.

• Here’s the job posting for the editor-in-chief position at the Edmonton Journal. Some of the qualifications are indeed intriguing – “an impressive history of involvement with superb digital projects” and “ability to embrace change and respond nimbly to an evolving media landscape” are both listed.
• Edmonton Police are increasingly using social media to connect with citizens. Here’s a great overview of the EPS Social Media Program’s history.
• In case you missed it: The Unknown Studio interviewed Mayor Stephen Mandel for their final episode of season 4.
• It sounds like theCHIVE is pretty popular here in Edmonton with a local meetup and everything. I think communities of interest like that will become increasingly important in the media landscape.
• Danny Hooper announced his retirement from the CFCW Morning Show last Monday. He’s going to focus on fundraising initiatives and his MC business instead. Here’s the thread on PSR.
• Andrew Ng is switching from Citytv Edmonton to Global Calgary.
• The Online News Association is launching a local meetup this fall. The first meeting will take place at Mercer Tavern on September 12. It is being co-organized by CTV Edmonton’s Chandra Lye and the Edmonton Journal’s Lucas Timmons.
• Want to nominate a local filmmaker for the Edmonton Film Prize? You’ve got until August 9.
• Soon Facebook will allow everyone to embed public posts on their web pages. Just as online news sites have taken to including tweets (as I did above), the expectation is that they’ll do the same with Facebook.
• There have been a few interesting sales in the US recently: Jeff Bezos has purchased the Washington Post, Red Sox owner John Henry has purchased the Boston Globe, and Newsweek was purchased by IBT Media.
