Here is my latest update on local media stuff:

• Have you heard? 92.5 JOE FM has been renamed to 925 Fresh FM. They must be doing the new format/station on a tiny budget. Not only is their logo horrendous, but their website consists entirely of embedded Facebook and Twitter widgets. Maybe that’s the way it is done now. Or maybe they just blew the budget on the front page ad in the Edmonton Sun. Even more curiously, they decided to create NEW social media profiles rather than take advantage of the existing communities they had created. Over 2300 followers on Twitter and 4600 likes on Facebook, just thrown away. Here’s the PSR thread on the switch.

• “We are very excited to launch our successful Fresh radio brand in Edmonton,” said Garry McKenzie, Regional General Manager, Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg, Corus Radio. “Through market research and the proven success of Fresh in our other Corus markets, we know that The New 92.5 Fresh FM will reflect the fun, contemporary and vibrant culture that the city is known for with music that Edmontonians love to hear.” The switch officially took effect at noon on January 9.
• Tamara has scheduled the third Meet the Media event for February 22 at The Underground Tap & Grill. Looks like the event is already at capacity, but you can add yourself to the wait list. Here is Tamara’s post about the event.
• Sounds like NAIT’s Claire Theobald is the newest intern at Global Edmontonis the newest intern at Citytv Edmonton!
• Very interesting read about The Gateway’s autonomy campaign. “Before this last decade, The Gateway was a Students’ Union-run publication, operating as an SU-owned service, with some of its power in the hands of the executive and Students’ Council. Throughout the paper’s history, this relationship had its ups and downs, but The Gateway’s ultimate decision to pursue autonomy represented an opportunity for the newspaper to come into its own.”
• Has #yeg become too popular for its own good? Laurie Callsen looks at spamming the hashtag.
• Here’s an interview with Paula Kirman on her work in activism and social media.
• Linda Hoang is now a full-time employee at CTV and she’s written about what it means to be a Digital Reporter. Oh and in case you missed it, here are her social media-related new year’s resolutions.

• Remember Yakupov and the spat he created with the media? Here’s another take on the situation: Filtering Through the Noise of Sports Journalism. “And who knows, maybe this group of reporters was right, and Yakupov just didn’t want to talk. But to make an ill-informed assumption and label him as a bad leader or prima donna is simply irresponsible and misleading journalism.”
• TheLocalGood.ca is looking for a social media coordinator to join the team. The deadline to apply is February 2.

• Sounds like New Year’s Eve was a big success for Citytv, with a record-breaking 5.9 million unique viewers tuning in. “The inaugural year of the Edmonton celebration also garnered a strong audience among key demos, beating closest competitor Global by 24% among 2+ viewers and 19% among A18-49.”
• The Journal is doing a series on pets & local personalities, and this week CTV Edmonton’s Daryl McIntyre talks about his dog Dolly.
• Here’s an interesting thread on Reddit about why we lack a radio station dedicated to classical music.
• Sounds like Nail Yakupov has caused a stir with the media because he doesn’t like to talk to them. I like David Staples’ take on the situation: “Do the simple, easy things (giving out mindless post-game quotes) without any fuss or hassle, so you can focus on the big, difficult things ( playing well in the NHL).”
• Global Edmonton’s Carole Anne Devaney will be welcoming Oprah when she is in town on January 21!

Happy New Year! Here is my latest update on local media stuff:

• As mentioned previously, Citytv’s Ryan Jespersen and Bridget Ryan are joining forces with Liann Cameron from 91.7 THE BOUNCE and Brandy Taylor from SONiC 102.9 to host our city’s New Years Eve celebration from Churchill Square. Looking forward to it!
• The TV show ‘Undercover Boss Canada’ is featuring Clark Builders founder Andy Clark in an upcoming episode set to air on January 31. In addition to Edmonton, filming took place in Yellowknife and Calgary.
• I like this look back at 2012 from the Journal. “Here are ten stories that, by other metrics, might have slipped through the cracks, but were remembered for their overwhelming traction on social channels.”
• A couple of weeks ago, Metro did a story on the Idle No More march and embedded a Google Map with the route. More like that please!
• There’s a “Digital Tools Workshop” for writers and editors coming up on January 19, taught by Omar Mouallem.
• Edmonton Journal photographer Larry Wong was named 2012 Global Photographer of the Year in the Global Photo Awards. Congratulations to Larry, but I have to say, the combination of a general and far-reaching name like “Global Photo Awards” and a website that looks like it was created in the 90s certainly diminishes the perceived prestige of the award.
• The McCauley Family Life Videography Project now has a Tumblr.
• The Edmonton Journal recently launched a new Subscriber Rewards site. You can now access rewards, contests, and other special offers all in one place.
• This looks like it would have been interesting: Edmonton media get taste of battle at military weapons demo.
• The next Capital Ideas Edmonton event is coming up on January 23 and features Teresa Spinelli and Dan Haight who will discuss building a family business.
• I’ve never heard of the Max! Canadian Healthy Vending machines, but it seems that K-97’s own Terry Evans and his wife Jodie Chernoff are the local distributors (the company is called YEGMax!). They of course have one at Newcap Radio in West Edmonton Mall.
• It seems the New York Times paywall is working better than anyone had guessed it would. I don’t think that is necessarily good news for paywalls across the board though – local papers are nothing like the Times.
• Will 2013 be the year that responsive design starts to get weird? Maybe it’ll be the year that we start to see any responsive design at all here in Edmonton (among the mainstream media, that is).
• Newsweek just couldn’t resist including a hashtag on its final print cover.
• I could not believe that Luka Magnotta was selected as Canada’s 2012 Newsmaker of the Year. What does that say about our country’s newsrooms?
• If you watched Global during the holidays, you’ve probably seen their Christmas videos. Here’s a look behind-the-scenes:

• Here are some thoughts from Glenn Kubish on the media’s coverage of the Newtown tragedy. “Serious television news reporters have to make some kind of peace (and it can be made) with the fact their work, for the most part, is work that viewers will not pay for, or not pay much for.”
• Interesting read about how The Newtown Bee is covering the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. “To distribute news about the shooting, The Bee relied on digital technology. Unfortunately, the website was not accustomed to the traffic surge and it crashed multiple times…”
• There’s still time to make a donation to CBC Edmonton’s Turkey Drive. The goal is $230,000 (or about 9200 turkeys) but right now they’re at just over $62,000. You’ve got until Thursday to make your contribution!
• Don’t miss this story about an intriguing University of Alberta research project called Indigenous Twibes in 140 Characters or Less.
• I’ll admit I haven’t been paying much attention to this story, but I know many of you have been: Edmonton nightclub apologizes for checkstop tweet. I get why people are upset about it, but I think the whole thing was way overblown. Let’s say I’m driving to a Christmas party and I come across a checkstop, then when I get to the party, I tell everyone about the checkstop. Twitter is just a bigger version of that party, in my opinion. Besides, radio stations talk about the location of speed traps all the time, how is this any different?
• Great to hear that Chelsey Smith is back and doing some work for Alberta Primetime!
• This sounds like an interesting idea: The McCauley Family Life Video Project is “a series of short video vignettes showcasing life in McCauley and profiling families in the neighbourhood featured online through social media.”
• Congratulations to Linda on becoming a full-time employee at CTV Edmonton!
• Check out Marty Forbes’ good, bad, and ugly list.
• The latest Relinked column looks at the non-arena stories that were popular on Wednesday.
• According to the Canadian Magazines blog, entries are now being accepted for the 2013 Alberta Magazine Awards. The deadline for submissions is January 10, 2013.
• Come on down! The Price is Right Live! is coming to Edmonton in March. No, it’s not the real thing, but it could still be fun to check out.

• I’m sorry, this is news why? I’m sure the story about Fox News showcasing Edmonton’s economy was meant to make us feel good about our city, but I think the coverage actually has the opposite effect. It makes you think, “wow, look at that, we’re important enough for Fox to do ONE story!”
• The Chamber of Commerce is counting down its Top Ten News Stories of 2012.
• It hasn’t been enabled for me yet, but apparently Twitter is rolling out the long-awaited feature that lets you download all of your tweets.
• Pretty interesting to see that the New York Times is getting into the ebook publishing business. It makes sense to me.

• The Edmonton Sun’s paywall went live on December 4. They call it SUN+ and you get a limit of 20 articles per month for free. For a limited time, you can subscribe for 99 cents per month, after that the price goes up to $5.99/month. Looks like they may have some implementation issues – results in Google all seem to say: “You have reached your monthly limit of premium articles. To get full access to Edmonton Sun, login…”
• The latest PPM Top-Line Radio Statistics for Edmonton are out, which you can see here. 102.3 NOW! FM is in the top spot, followed by 630 CHED and Capital FM.
• Here’s a big update on what Capital Ideas Edmonton has been up to. “Capital Ideas is about making it possible for business owners to share what they know.” And don’t miss the next Capital Ideas event taking place on Wednesday at The Business Link, covering “lean” business principles.
• HOT 107’s Santa Paws: Stuff the Studio! is accepting donations for the Edmonton Humane Society. “HOT 107 recognizes that pets with homes are often showered with gifts and treats for Christmas, and we believe that shelter animals deserve a little holiday love too!”

• This is pretty neat: four teens from the Kids with Cancer Society got to spend a day at Global Edmonton learning about what its like to be a reporter.
• Odvod Media is looking for a full-time writer/editor. The deadline to apply is December 21.
• Applications for the Edmonton Journal’s online editor/producer position need to be in by Wednesday!
• CJSR turns 29 in January, and they’re looking for birthday messages from you. There are prizes for the top three entries, and the deadline is December 31.

UPDATE: Another media-related link – many at 630 CHED are mourning the loss of Wheatly McKenna Robinson, a 12-year-old Airedale who was a fixture at the station for over a decade.

 

 

This week I want to first acknowledge that a number of readers have suggested I should improve the accessibility of my blog (link differentiation, appropriate alternate text and other features for screen readers, etc.). I have been planning to redesign for a little while now, and will make accessibility an important part of the update (the other big thing is responsive design). • There’s still time to make a Movember donation! Check out the Edmonton Media Mos network. Also, shout out to Rick Harp who doesn’t appear to be in the network but who is still rocking a solid moustache. He just celebrated his one-year-anniversary here in Edmonton!
• I totally missed this, but Q with Jian Ghomeshi did a live show in Edmonton on Thursday. You can listen to the archived audio online – don’t miss part two, which is the media panel featuring Paula Simons. Here’s a nice recap from John Richardson.
• Marty Forbes has an update on what has been happening with local radio and television stations. For instance: “CTV’s Josh Classen is now on with Pepper and Dylan on 104.9 VIRGIN Radio doing weather and fooling around six times a morning and again with Jake Ryan every afternoon.”
• CTV has announced that Bill Fortier will join Brenna Rose as co-anchor of CTV News Weekends as of December 1. Also – Jennifer Dolynchuk is CTV Morning Live’s newest traffic host.
• CBC Edmonton’s Portia Clark, usually seen on TV, is now hosting Radio Active on 740 AM / 93.9 FM until March!
• Heather McIntyre has been at Metro for two years now – congrats!
• Brittney reports that Brenton Driedger is the new 630 CHED/iNews 880 Assistant News Director.
• Why is local news the focal point for the Edmonton Journal? I’m not sure this Relinked column really answers the question. At least part of the answer has to be related to advertisers who ultimately fund the paper.
• The first edition of MODCITY is now available at various locations throughout the city. Can’t wait to see it in person!
• Don’t forget the Miss Representation screening takes place on Thursday evening at the Art Gallery of Alberta. It’s “a film that explores the impact media has not only on women but society as well.”
• Here’s a really great post from Jeff Jarvis: “Content is that which fills something. Service is that which accomplishes something.” He argues that media and education should be focused on providing services rather the content.
• Be sure to check out The Unknown Studio on Wednesday for a big announcement!
• Tiny Plastic Men premieres on December 3 on Super Channel.

• Congratulations to Marty Forbes and Danny Hooper who were among the many worthy Edmontonians awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal on November 14. “The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal honours Her Majesty’s service to our country. It also honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.” Here’s the PSR thread.
• If you watch CTV Morning Live you’ll have noticed they made some changes last week. As mentioned here before, Stacey Brotzel joined the team, but so has Jesse Beyer, a graduate of NAIT who was most recently in Saskatoon. Also, Friday was Melissa Dominelli’s last day.
• There are some good TV stats in this Vancouver Sun article. For the week of November 5-11, the News Hour on Global Edmonton had 135,000 viewers compared to CTV Edmonton’s 96,000. And apparently 184,000 viewers in Edmonton watched the CFL Western semi-final.
• MODCITY Magazine will make its official debut on November 23. You can sign up to get the inaugural copy here. And here’s a sneak peek at the final proofs.
• The Edmonton Sun’s annual SOLD! auction is now open and runs until 9pm on Friday. Over $1.2 million in goods and services are available for bidding and opening bids are set at 50% of the retail value.
• Have you checked out The Wanderer? It launched on July 5, 2012 and is a student-driven online magazine.
• Don’t miss this feature on Mike Winters’ Wonderdick. “Edmonton has its own weird charm, and Mr. Winters admits he misses parts of it.”
• Want to be an intern at the Edmonton Journal this summer? The deadline to apply is December 5.
• WordCamp took place on Friday and Saturday and I think it was a big success! I have more to write later, but for now check out Sarah’s recap.

• Mike McGuire is one of the newest faces at Leduc’s The ONE FM. He’s also the new in-game host for the Edmonton Rush. Congrats!
• It seems that Sean Burke was relieved of his duties as the morning man on CISN. He wrote on his Facebook page, “I’m going to be fine…and if I decide to stay in radio, you’ll be the first to find out!”
• Here’s a Relinked column all about the snow. “Over time, any weather stories have diminishing returns, and pretty rapid ones at that…”
• Did anyone catch The Fifth Estate’s episode about Lucy the Elephant?
• GIG CITY has a nice profile on local YouTube rapper Jo Thrillz. “He’s amassed more than 2.8 million views on his YouTube channel…”
• Edmonton’s Mosaic Entertainment has teamed up with Super Channel to create a new comedy series called Tiny Plastic Men. It will air Mondays beginning December 3rd on Super Channel. Check out the website here.
• Scope Printing & Publishing is looking for a reporter slash producer to be based here in Edmonton.
• Quebecor announced last week that it is cutting 500 jobs at Sun Media Corp. and is closing two printing plants. It also plans to expand the use of paywalls.
• The federal government has contributed $354,700 to the Aboriginal Multi-Media Society of Alberta (AMMSA) to support 168 hours of radio programming per week.
• Mashable has an infographic on paywalls.
• I haven’t done an update since the US Election, so I wanted to make sure I mentioned this link: The US election was a wake up call for data illiterate journalists. See also: Nate Silver wins, and data is vindicated.
• It’s that time of year: up! 99.3 and Lite 95.7 both switched to 100% Christmas music on November 17. Once again, up! got the jump on Lite.

Here is my latest update on local media stuff:

• Some very exciting news from Startup Edmonton: the new Creators Studio is opening in January 2013. It’s an open co-working space for “creative entrepreneurs and freelancing graphic designers, industrial designers, fashion designers, production designers, writers, playwrights, illustrators, filmmakers, musicians, video game developers, photographers, storytellers, producers, and publishers.” I’m guessing more than a few of you fall into that list, so check it out.
• A similar thing (though perhaps more conceptual at this stage) seems to be happening in Winnipeg with an announcement from New Media Manitoba.
• Sounds like the Edmonton Sun’s annual Charity Auction was another big success this year, raising more than $210,000 for four local charities.
• Halloween marked the one year anchor anniversary for Global Edmonton’s Gord Steinke and Carole Anne Devaney. Congrats!
• There are a bunch of local media men participating in Movember, which you can see here. Ryan Jespersen and BT Edmonton are leading the way so far!
• Don’t forget, the Christmas Bureau’s Campaign Launch is coming up on November 13. There’s still time to register your team.
• Great to hear that Ed Mason returned to work on October 29!
• Venture Publishing is looking for a Managing Editor to join the Custom Publishing Division.
• David Johnston’s latest Relinked column takes a look at how to cover big stories like Hurricane Sandy or Halloween.
• BlogWest has announced a “save the date” for their 12 Days of Christmas Twitter Party.
• Cool event coming up at the end of the month: Miss Representation. “Join us for at 6:30pm for a wine and dessert reception, followed by the 90 minute screening of Miss Representation; a film that explores the impact media has not only on women but society as well. After the film our panel discussion will prompt us to think critically and further examine the limitations that sterotypes place on our society. • Tomorrow evening at City Hall are the Salvos Prelorentzos Peace Awards. The guest speaker is David Climenhaga, and Paula Kirman is being honored.
• CKUA raised a little over $475,000 during its Fall 2012 Campaign!

Here is my latest update on local media stuff:

• Using Klout, Hill + Knowlton Strategies has come up with a list of the ten most influential journalists in Alberta politics. Paula Simons tops the list, followed by Vassy Kapelos and Dave Cournoyer.
• The Journal received three nominations for the 17th annual Eppy Awards. Among them, Paula Simons was nominated for best use of social media, “in recognition of her innovative use of Facebook and Twitter”. Check back next week when I give myself an award for best use of pen and paper, in recognition of my innovative use of Moleskines and Sharpies.
• The Journal also picked up a silver in the best cross-platform initiative category of the 2012 Canadian Online Publishing Awards for their ebook on the Slave Lake fire.
• I missed this: a great profile on Terry Jones. “Today Jones is one of the most recognized media personalities in Canada. He does radio. He has thousands of followers on Twitter. But mostly he is known for columns that chronicle Canadian exploits around the world. More than anything he is still a newspaperman.”
• Missed this also: 630 CHED’s Dave Rutherford is being awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
• Global Edmonton has started using a new digital assignment board.
• Postmedia is getting out of the job listings business and has partnered with Workopolis to provide career-search features across all Postmedia newspaper websites.
• After nearly 30 years of service, CBC Edmonton’s house piano has been sold to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Apparently the ESO picked it up in August and used it at Symphony Under the Sky.
• Here are the details for 630 CHED’s Santas Anonymous Campaign 2012. They are looking for both donations and volunteers! Also check out Danny Hooper’s article on the auction.
• The November issue of Boyle McCauley News is now online with the theme of “Pay it Forward”.

• Here’s the latest advertising news from the Edmonton Journal.
• Has anyone used Vue Weekly’s Freeloader points thingy? Yes, that’s a technical term.
• It looks like 2013 will be the year of the paywall here in Canada. All Postmedia newspapers will be behind a paywall by then, as will The Globe and Mail, and now, the Toronto Star. I think the jury’s still out on whether or not it’ll work for local papers – they’re very different animals than the NY Times or the WSJ.
• Two reasons to link to this Edmonton Sun article. First, talk about trying too hard to make a connection: “Former Edmontonian caught in hurricane.” Seriously? And second, it turns out the subject is Dawn Chubai, former weather person on BT Edmonton from 1999 to 2004.
• Windows 8 was officially released on Friday, and that means the Windows Store is open for business. At the moment, there aren’t many Canadian news apps available. I like CBC’s the best so far. All of the Sun newspapers have an app, including the Edmonton Sun, but it doesn’t work.

It has been a few weeks since my last update, so a few of the links below are a bit older but I wanted to include them just the same. Here is my latest update on local media stuff:

• Big news for those of you who watch TV in the morning: Stacey Brotzel is making the shift from BT Edmonton to CTV. She starts co-hosting CTV Morning Live on November 12. Even Lloyd Lewis tweeted about the news! Best of luck to all.
• Congratulations to Daryl McIntyre on being named one of NAIT’s Top 50 Alumni. He graduated from the Radio & Television arts program in 1983.
• “Not since Fort Edmonton picked up stakes has there been such a fuss over a simple change of address.” Love it! GIG CITY on the CKUA move.
• On October 2, the Oilers changed their Twitter handle from @NHL_Oilers to @EdmontonOilers. A welcome and overdue change!
• Earlier this month, ATB Financial’s senior economist Todd Hirsch said the local radio industry is “both on the rise and the fall.” He noted that while the number of stations in Alberta has grown steadily, the annual profit per station has dropped significantly.
• GIG CITY has the story of Crash and Mars, the morning crew on Now! 102.3 FM, who used their engagement to help advertise for the station.
• The Journal has the story of J’lyn Nye and her matchmaking mother!
• Here’s a great Storify of the #TweetForHope campaign that raised 2000 meals for clients at the Hope Mission.
• 630 CHED’s Ed Mason suffered a heart attack earlier this month – fortunately he was released from hospital on October 3 and was expected to spend about a month recuperating. All the best!
• Great to see Todd Babiak getting some love from Metro for his new blog magpietown.
• One of CTV Edmonton’s “Inside Vue’s Best of Edmonton” interviews featured Sonic 102.9 FM’s host Garner Andrews, named Edmonton’s Best Morning Radio Host.
• Here are three recent Relinked columns to check out: Leading the pack without an alpha story, Hockey may be absent, but the hunger for NHL news persists, and Journal’s Instagram feature a bonus to Bieber concert and comic convention.
• Carly Kincaid returns to the radio on Wednesday as she joins the crew at Up! 99.3 FM.
• Some recent numbers to consider from Global’s Troy Reeb: Tuesday’s News Hour averaged 143,000 viewers compared to 71,000 for CTV and 2,000 for CBC.
• Here’s a profile of BT Edmonton’s Bridget Ryan.
• MediaMag has some October media moves, among them that Darcy Henton has moved from the Journal to the Herald.
• I’m glad to see this experimentation from the Journal: they’ve created a Winter Map using a Google Maps-powered platform. You can contribute online.
• One of the bigger Canadian media stories is that the CRTC rejected BCE Inc.’s proposed $3.4 billion takeover of Astral Media. Unsurprisingly, Rogers, Telus, and Quebecor all opposed the deal, but interestingly Shaw supported it.
• The Edmonton Journal is looking for an Assignment Editor to join the newsroom.
• Check it out, a CFRN-TV Totem Talk Newsletter from September 1958! Speaking of CFRN history, Al Girard noted the 58th anniversary of the station on October 17. That means the big 6-0 is coming up soon!
• There are still limited tickets available for Avenue Edmonton’s Top 40 Under 40 Awards Ceremony which takes place on November 1 at MKT.
• Save the date for the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton’s annual Media Campaign Launch (aka Gingerbread House Decorating Contest): November 13!
