Edmonton Notes for 12/5/2010

My Edmonton Etcetera blog got a little more official this week, with a new domain name: http://edmontonetc.ca/ (Tumblr has been experiencing downtime today)

Here are my weekly Edmonton notes:

Downtown in the Sun
We’ve had some great weather recently, and lots of sunshine!

Whitemud Drive
Fantastic shot of Whitemud Drive by Darren Kirby.

Impressive, isn’t it?

Edmonton Notes for 11/28/2010

Today was the big day – the 98th Grey Cup took place at Commonwealth Stadium, and the Montreal Alouettes defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders for the second year in a row. You can see my recap of the kickoff party here, and my recap of the parade here. My photos of the festival are here.

I’m still posting Edmonton-related stuff throughout the week at Edmonton Etcetera.

Here are my weekly notes:

Santas Anonymous
Sharon and I joined a bunch of other Twitter volunteers at the Santas Anonymous warehouse on Friday evening.

2010 Grey Cup Festival Kickoff
City Hall, all lit up for the Grey Cup festival kickoff.

2010 Grey Cup Festival
Look at that, an event in the space behind the library! Why can’t we have more of those?

2010 Grey Cup Festival
Though we definitely had some help from the milder weather, it was great to see so many people downtown this week.

Edmonton’s Hot to Huddle 2010 Grey Cup Festival Parade!

Downtown Edmonton has been full of energy this week for the Grey Cup Festival, but today’s parade took it to another level! Here are some of the highlights.

I’d say green was definitely the dominant color in the crowds – they even brought chairs!

2010 Grey Cup Parade

The Snowbirds criss-crossed the sky a few times!

2010 Grey Cup Parade

2010 Grey Cup Parade

Bryan Hall was the Grand Marshall for the parade.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

Each of the teams had a Nissan Cube.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

They also had cheer teams. The Eskimos cheer team even did some stunts!

2010 Grey Cup Parade

A favorite from the Capital Ex parade returned – the West Jet plane!

2010 Grey Cup Parade

I thought the Coast Hotels float was creative.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

The CN float was really well done too.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

These poor kids had the worst job, following the horses.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

The Riders’ cheer team received a warm welcome!

2010 Grey Cup Parade

As did the rest of the Roughrider supporters.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

They even had pyrotechnics. How can you go wrong with that?!

2010 Grey Cup Parade

It really was a sea of green for a while.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

This one was my favorite of the parade:

2010 Grey Cup Parade

This guy remarked “buying fans one Candy Cane at a time!” as he passed by.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

I love that this guy is a Calgary fan.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

There was loud applause as our Armed Forces passed by.

2010 Grey Cup Parade

Attendance wasn’t as large as the Capital EX parade, but given the temperature, I’d say it was still a very strong turnout!

You can see the rest of my parade photos here (over 140 in all).

Edmonton’s Hot to Huddle 2010 Grey Cup Festival Kick-off!

Tonight the 2010 Grey Cup Festival officially started here in Edmonton with a big kick-off party outside City Hall. Hundreds of people braved the cold to see the Grey Cup in person, to experience the flashmob and fireworks, and to get a first look at Huddle Town.

Purolator delivered the “special guest” that everyone was hoping to see.

2010 Grey Cup Festival Kickoff

There were fans of all teams on hand to celebrate!

2010 Grey Cup Festival Kickoff

With the Zipline in the background, everyone listened for the official kick-off of the festivities.

2010 Grey Cup Festival Kickoff

After the dignitaries had spoken, there was a big flashmob on the CN field (I suppose no one saw it coming, but the large group of people lined up on the field, with security preventing others from joining in, made it clear that something was up…not to mention the volunteer for the flashmob page on the website).

2010 Grey Cup Festival Kickoff

Fireworks quickly followed the entertaining dance number!

2010 Grey Cup Festival Kickoff

The trophy was so close you could almost touch it.

2010 Grey Cup Festival Kickoff

The end of the kick-off program meant the official opening of Huddle Town, the giant heated tent in Churchill Square.

Meanwhile, a Peewee football game was played on the CN field.

The festival is now officially underway!

Ready, set, huddle!

It's like magic when the sun sets on top of the pyramid

It might be cold outside, but you’ve got to admit, winter can be really beautiful.

Recap: Launch Party Edmonton 2

Tonight we held the second Launch Party here in Edmonton at the old Art Gallery space in Enterprise Square (you can read my recap of Launch Party 1 here). With over 200 people in attendance, awesome startups, and that signature Startup Edmonton vibe, I’d say the event was a big success!

Launch Party 2

If you haven’t already done so, I strongly recommend you check out Doug’s preview of the companies at Launch Party tonight. It’s a great rundown of what everyone is working on. Each company had a table tonight to demo their products and to chat with attendees. They also had the opportunity to make a short elevator pitch in front of the whole crowd (though due to the space configuration, I know some people couldn’t hear, sorry about that).

Here are the companies that participated tonight:

Some of these companies you may have already heard about, such as Fluik or Smibs.tv, both of which were recently written up in the Edmonton Journal. Others, such as Robot Rhythm, have been flying under the radar but are on to something really interesting. Either way, Launch Party is a great way for these companies to showcase some of the really innovative work that is happening right here in Edmonton.

Launch Party 2Launch Party 2

Launch Party is also a great opportunity for the companies to practice their elevator pitches. The space was a little tighter than it was at Launch Party 1, which made saying hello a necessity!

Launch Party 2Launch Party 2

Drinks, music, and great company made the evening an enjoyable one for everybody who braved the first onslaught of winter to attend. Thanks to everyone who came out tonight to support Edmonton’s thriving tech scene.

Edmonton Notes for 11/14/2010

I’ve been experimenting with another Edmonton-focused blog this week. I call it Edmonton Etcetera. As I come across Edmonton stuff online, I post it there. I see it as sort of in between Twitter and this blog. Check it out (here’s the archive of recent entries) and let me know what you think – I’ll write more about it later.

Here are my weekly Edmonton notes:

Avenue Edmonton’s Top 40 Under 40 for 2010

The second annual Top 40 Under 40 list was unveiled tonight at the Art Gallery of Alberta at a very well-attended event. In a city that could use a little more self-congratulation, I think it’s great that Avenue Edmonton is recognizing the efforts of such a diverse and interesting group of Edmontonians:

Each year, Avenue’s Top 40 Under 40 recognizes the individuals in Greater Edmonton who are leading the city through this period of growth and change. Aside from being under 40, there is no common denominator defining them. Their focus may be on hospitality, humanitarianism or health; they are environmentalists and entrepreneurs, educators and entertainers, lawyers and fundraisers and more. Some don’t even have professions — just passions that become successful ventures, and in turn, raise the city’s profile. We recognize them individually because each one succeeds and leads in his or her field, but we celebrate them collectively because together they enrich our city.

You can read all about the Top 40 Under 40 here. There was a little discussion tonight about whether or not the average age of the list had gone up, and it has, but only slightly – from 33.4 in 2009 to 34.6 in 2010.

2010 Edmonton Top 40 Under 40

The lovely Tegan Martin-Drysdale is on the cover of the November issue. Here’s where to find her and the other Top 40 members online (in alphabetical order):

You can follow all the people on Twitter here.

I thought the event tonight ran very smoothly! It was still full of people, but there was more room to move this year. Here are some photos from the evening:
