• Sharon and I went to see the new Southgate expansion today, finally. It’s pretty nice, and reminded us of Calgary. The new LRT station is looking good also.
• The topic for Blog Action Day 2009 has been announced! Write about climate change on October 15!
• I use Opera Mini all the time on my BlackBerry. The mobile browser is now used by more than 30 million people!
• Starbucks launched a couple of cool new iPhone apps, one of which lets you pay from your phone. Very cool!
• I really like this shorthand for sketching UI flows. Looks pretty useful.
• The FCC announced a new set of rules this week related to net neutrality, prompting Wireless North to ask – where is Canada?

Here are my weekly notes:

• Intuit bought Mint.com this week for $170 million. I’ve read a lot of backlash to the deal though, such as this post.
• Another day, another front-page headline for The Katz Group regarding the proposed arena. It’s amazing how The Journal continues to pump out stories despite having zero new information.
• I walked to school when I was a kid (granted I lived in Inuvik where you could walk from one end of the town to the other in about 15 minutes). Darren points to a New York Times article on how those days are long gone.
• An interview with Vinod Khosla.
• Fascinating concept: One pig, 185 different products.
• I like looking at logos, I don’t know why. Boing Boing linked to an animated short in which the city of Los Angeles and all the characters are composed of corporate logos.
• Sharon and I had a busy weekend! Yesterday was the Citadel open house and the Randall Stout talk on the new Art Gallery of Alberta. Today was the AIDS Walk For Life (I raised $210, thanks everyone!) and we stopped by Everyone for Edmonton too.

• I went to see Marilyn Manson on Friday night with my brother and a couple of his friends. While I’m definitely not the world’s biggest Manson fan, I do enjoy much of his music and I thought the concert was great!
• From Jeff Jarvis: News organizations should seek hyperdistribution. That is, reverse-syndication, the embeddable paper, API, specialization, social engagement.
• Scott Hanselman has a new tools list for developers and power users. Definitely check it out!
• One of my favorite comics, xkcd, is coming out with a book!
• Interesting post from the Your Alberta Blog on “the two most widely perpetuated misconceptions about oil sands development”.
• The AIDS Walk For Life is coming up next weekend, and Sharon and I are both walking again this year. • This is the kind of thing that makes the Internet great – Backblaze has posted a detailed inventory list and instructions on how to build your very own 67 terabyte 4U server for less than $8000 USD. Also shows you how drastically costs have come down.

Summer is nearly gone! At least we’re getting some warm weather to finish it off. Here are my weekly notes:

• Went to see District 9 on Friday with Sharon. I’m not sure it lived up to the hype, but I did find it clever and entertaining. The shaky-cam I could have done without, however.
• This is funny: the best out of office replies ever.
• Apple’s Fifth Avenue store in New York sells the equivalent of one Mercedes-Benz C300 sedan per square foot – “Apple may be the highest grossing retailer ever on Fifth Avenue.”
• Useful: Typedia, a shared encyclopedia of typefaces. Somewhat related: Ikea switched from Futura and Century Schoolbook to Verdana in the latest catalogue. And on the topic of Ikea, here’s the 1965 catalogue.
• I had no idea there was a Singularity University, backed by Google and operating on NASA’s Silicon Valley campus. Cool stuff.
• Sharon and I went to the Edmonton Corn Maze this weekend! It was fun! My photoset is here.

• Another year of the Fringe has come and gone. It was fun though!
• Twitter is getting serious about location. I’m excited for the changes. Jeff Jarvis wrote about the news: “The live web, the social web, and the geo web come together.”
• I finally picked up a book this weekend that I’ve been eyeing for a while: Jeb Brugmann’s Welcome to the Urban Revolution: How Cities Are Changing the World. Seems like my kinda book!
• From Hanselman: Top 10 Tips Working Developers Should Know about Windows 7. Also for developers: VB and C# enhancements in VS 2010.
• Techvibes has a new Community Manager for Edmonton: Doug van Spronsen. Welcome!
• This is pretty interesting: when serving financial news and information, Yahoo draws 17.5 times the traffic of Google.
• We’ve got a cause for Twestival Local in Edmonton – the Youth Emergency Shelter Society. Now we just need to find a venue!

Here are my weekly notes:

• Sharon and I went to see The Time Traveler’s Wife tonight. It was alright, if a little confusing at times (and no I didn’t read the book). We both wondered why it wasn’t called simply, The Time Traveler. Perhaps his wife is featured more prominently in the book?
• We also spent a bunch of time at the Fringe this weekend. Sharon wrote about the two plays we saw on Saturday here and on Sunday here.
• In case you missed it: Twitter is getting serious about retweets.
• Could you fill only one trash bin for three months? Now there’s an interesting and worthwhile challenge!
• I’m a huge fan of Paramore, can’t wait for the new album. New York Magazine asks if they are the greatest lady-fronted rock band in the USA.
• YouTube is hosting a weeklong viewing of Ghostbusters in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary. And apparently they are still working on Ghostbusters 3.
• Have you seen the scene-stealing squirrel? Search “crasher squirrel” for more awesome photos! Or look at Mashable’s list of the top ten pics.

Here are my weekly notes:

• Sharon and I went to see Julie & Julia last night. Her pick obviously, but I enjoyed it. Meryl Streep was amazing as usual.
• Lately I’ve been doing a lot with statistics, as I’m sure my regular readers have noticed. I rather enjoy sorting through collections of data to find trends, patterns, and other interesting tidbits. As if on cue, the New York Times ran a story this week on the Internet-age statistician.
• An interesting look at the top 5% most active users on Twitter. No big surprises. Related visualization: If Twitter was 100 people…
• Tiny Perfect Blog is no more. Dave has the details.
• I probably find this interesting because I was there last weekend: attendance at the Royal Tyrrell Museum is at a 15-year high so far this summer.
• For typeface geeks: the history of the Times New Roman typeface.
• I think this is impressive – the world’s first LEED Platinum certified data center has opened in Germany. As the article says, “that’s no small task considering the energy required to keep stacks of servers running smoothly in a climate-controlled environment.”

What an incredibly hot weekend here in Edmonton, plus 30 degrees both days. Here are my weekly notes:

• I finally bought a new TV today. I have been looking for a while, and decided on the LG 42CL40, which is a 42” HD 1080p LCD with 120Hz technology. Picked it up at Costco where it was on sale! Looks great.
• Both surprising and not at the same time: an app called Offender Location, which shows you where registered sex offenders live, was among the most popular apps on the iPhone recently.
• Computer scientists are debating whether there should be limits on research that could potentially cause us to lose control over our machines. In 1975, a group of scientists met at the same place to discuss a similar issue related to genetics research.
• Signs of a business model: Twitter 101. Also, did the White House ban Twitter?
• Here are Canada’s leading Web 2.0 pioneers, as chosen by Backbone Magazine. You’ll note the lack of companies from locations other than Vancouver and Toronto.
