Final Thoughts

First of all, thank you very much to Janis La Couvée for prompting me to put this together, and for helping out with the data. Follow Janice for all things Victoria on Twitter, and also check out @victoriatweetup, @smcvictoria, and Twestival Victoria.

I didn’t really know what to expect in terms of the data, but when going through the stats I was struck by how similar the results are to Edmonton in January of last year. Maybe Victoria is poised for lots of Twitter growth! I’ll continue tracking (and improving my tracking).

State of the Edmonton Twittersphere – 2009 Year in Review

Welcome to the State of the Edmonton Twittersphere: 2009 Year in Review, my look at the intersection of Twitter and Edmonton in 2009!

I’ve done my best to ensure that everything is accurate, but take all the data you see here with a grain of salt. If I make any changes, I’ll update at the bottom of the post.

The source of the data is a combination of Twitter and Twitter Search. If a user has his or her location set to Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Nisku, Stony Plain, Fort Saskatchewan, Beaumont, Spruce Grove, or matching lat/long coordinates, they are considered an Edmontonian.

If you compare the monthly statistics here to my monthly State of the Edmonton Twittersphere posts, you’ll notice they are slightly different. The monthly posts represent a snapshot – over the year I got better at identifying local users, retrieving missing updates, etc. This posts reflects the most up-to-date information I have been able to gather.

Summary

I identified just over 14,000 local users who posted at least one tweet in 2009. In December, I identified 5654 local users who posted at least one tweet throughout the month. Our peak for active users was in November, at 5989.

Here are the 2009 summarized statistics:

# of tweets by local users: 2,410,017
# of tweets by local users containing #yeg: 138,047 (5.7%)
# of tweets by local users that were replies: 868,722 (36.0%)
# of tweets by local users containing links: 477,637 (19.8%)
# of tweets by local users that were retweets: 112,463 (4.7%)
# of tweets by local users that were twooshes: 84,180 (3.5%)

Here are the numbers above in graphic form:

And here’s a closer look at the total number of tweets posted by local users per month:

The 2.4 million tweets posted by local users in 2009 works out to about 4.6 tweets per minute. Just over half (52.2%) all of tweets were posted between 9 AM and 5 PM.

Hashtags

Starting in mid-July, I improved the way my systems track hashtags. Looking at the data now, I’m struck by the sheer number of hashtags that have been used by local users! From mid-July through December of 2009, I identified 29,469 unique hashtags. Here are the top ten:

  1. #yeg
  2. #Oilers
  3. #ff
  4. #ableg
  5. #followfriday
  6. #yegtraffic
  7. #fb
  8. #fun140
  9. #edmonton
  10. #yyc

Of course, #yeg is far and away the most popular. To put it into perspective:

Here’s what the tag cloud looks like without the top ten hashtags:

Another interesting stat related to hashtags: there were 437 unique tags used that started with #yeg. Here are the top ten:

  1. #yegtraffic
  2. #yegfood
  3. #yegtransit
  4. #yegfringe
  5. #yegchange
  6. #yegcc
  7. #yegphoto
  8. #yegfoodbank
  9. #yegsafetymtg
  10. #yegtweetup

The average length of a hashtag (excluding the #) was 11.25 characters, while the most common hashtag length was 9 characters. Hashtags four characters or less in length were used 2.25 times more than hashtags ten characters or more in length.

Clients

Twitter started reporting the client used to post updates in mid-February, so the data below is for almost the entire year. In total, I identified 754 different clients that were used by local users to post updates. Here are the top ten:

  1. web
  2. TweetDeck

  4. TwitterFon/EchoFon
  5. Tweetie

Twitter Posts

Here are some of the interesting Twitter-related posts I wrote in 2009:

Final Thoughts

I’m continually amazed by the local Twitter community here in Edmonton! Local users have used Twitter to meet one another, to do business, to effect change, and to support the less fortunate, among other things. The community is not led by anyone, instead it self-organizes, and because of that it has accomplished some amazing things. I can’t wait to see what 2010 brings!

Something to watch for in 2010: geotagged tweets (sending your latitude and longitude along with your tweet, usually via your mobile phone). By default, geotagging is disabled on Twitter, you must enable it in your settings. Thus far, just 270 local users have done so.

Thanks for reading my State of the Edmonton Twittersphere posts over the last year!

State of the Calgary Twittersphere – December 2009

Welcome to the tenth State of the Calgary Twittersphere, my look at the intersection of Twitter and Calgary. You can see last month’s stats here.

The source of the data this month is the same as last, primarily Twitter Search but also from Twitter directly. If a user has his or her location set to Calgary, Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane, Strathmore, or matching lat/long coordinates, they are considered a Calgarian.

For December 2009:

# of local users: 7122 (a decrease of 346 from November)

To clarify, that means there were 7122 users who posted at least one tweet in December 2009 with their location set to something that makes them an Calgarian as described above. This number should be treated as a minimum – there are probably many more Calgary users without their location set or that were not captured for some other reason.

Here are the rest of the stats for December 2009:

# of tweets by local users: 324614
# of tweets by local users containing #yyc: 11949 (3.7%)
# of tweets by local users that were replies: 102959 (31.7%)
# of tweets by local users containing links: 89063 (27.4%)
# of tweets by local users that were retweets: 20040 (6.2%)
# of tweets by local users that were twooshes: 12294 (3.8%)

Here are the numbers above in graphic form:

Some other interesting stats for the month:

Final Thoughts

As with Edmonton, there was a drop in users this month, no doubt due to the holidays. Christmas Day had the lowest number of tweets posted, at just 7086, but it picked up again by New Year’s Eve. Very interesting this month to see the jump in tagged tweets, from 2.6% too 3.7% or an increase of about 3900 tweets. Calgary finished 2009 with roughly 2 times as many active users than in March (the first month I recorded stats) and roughly 2.2 times as many tweets being posted each month.

Since March, I have identified just over 18,000 local users. The number above, 7122, is how many of them were active in December.

The 2009 year in review stats are coming soon, stay tuned!

State of the Edmonton Twittersphere – December 2009

Welcome to the twelfth State of the Edmonton Twittersphere, my look at the intersection of Twitter and Edmonton. You can see last month’s stats here.

The source of the data this month is the same as last, primarily Twitter Search but also from Twitter directly. If a user has his or her location set to Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Nisku, Stony Plain, Fort Saskatchewan, Beaumont, Spruce Grove, or matching lat/long coordinates, they are considered an Edmontonian.

For December 2009:

# of local users: 5517 (a decrease of 333 from November)

To clarify, that means there were 5517 users who posted at least one tweet in December 2009 with their location set to something that makes them an Edmontonian as described above. This number should be treated as a minimum – there are probably many more Edmonton users without their location set.

Here are the rest of the stats for December 2009:

# of tweets by local users: 296590
# of tweets by local users containing #yeg: 20024 (6.6%)
# of tweets by local users that were replies: 107402 (36.2%)
# of tweets by local users containing links: 65938 (22.2%)
# of tweets by local users that were retweets: 19374 (6.5%)
# of tweets by local users that were twooshes: 10434 (3.5%)

Here are the number of local users by community (besides Edmonton itself) for December:

Keep in mind that is based entirely on the text inside the location field of the user’s profile, and is definitely a minimum. Still, gives you an idea of the breakdown.

Some other interesting stats for the month:

Final Thoughts

Big decline in active users this month, which isn’t all that surprising given that many people spent a significant portion of it on holidays! Christmas Day had the lowest number of tweets posted, at just 6496, but it picked up again by New Year’s Eve. We finished 2009 with roughly 6.5 times more active users than we started with, and roughly 6 times as many tweets being posted each month.

Since January, I have identified just over 13,800 local users. The number above, 5517, is how many of them were active in December.

Calgary stats are up next, followed by the 2009 year-in-review stats. Stay tuned!

State of the Calgary Twittersphere – November 2009

Welcome to the ninth State of the Calgary Twittersphere, my look at the intersection of Twitter and Calgary.

For November 2009:

# of local users: 7468 (an increase of 185 from October)

To clarify, that means there were 7468 users who posted at least one tweet in November 2009 with their location set to something that makes them an Calgarian as described above. This number should be treated as a minimum – there are probably many more Calgary users without their location set or that were not captured for some other reason.

Here are the rest of the stats for November 2009:

# of tweets by local users: 314583
# of tweets by local users containing #yyc: 8078 (2.6%)
# of tweets by local users that were replies: 101430 (32.2%)
# of tweets by local users containing links: 83106 (26.4%)
# of tweets by local users that were retweets: 19614 (6.2%)
# of tweets by local users that were twooshes: 10867 (3.5%)

I think the retweet number might be a little off, due to the new retweet functionality on Twitter.com, but it’s close. Here are the numbers above in graphic form:

Here are the top clients used by local users for posting updates:

Some other interesting stats for the month:

Final Thoughts

Edmonton is catching up, but Calgary broke the 300,000 tweets in a single month barrier first! There were just 9 days in November with less than 10,000 local tweets posted. This is the second straight month that user growth in Edmonton has been larger too, though not by very much.

Since March, I have identified just over 17,600 local users. The number above, 7468, is how many of them were active in November.

December and 2009 year in review stats are coming soon!

State of the Edmonton Twittersphere – November 2009

Welcome to the eleventh State of the Edmonton Twittersphere, my look at the intersection of Twitter and Edmonton.

For November 2009:

# of local users: 5850 (an increase of 219 from October)

To clarify, that means there were 5850 users who posted at least one tweet in November 2009 with their location set to something that makes them an Edmontonian as described above. This number should be treated as a minimum – there are probably many more Edmonton users without their location set.

Here are the rest of the stats for November 2009:

# of tweets by local users: 290542
# of tweets by local users containing #yeg: 17282 (5.9%)
# of tweets by local users that were replies: 106992 (36.8%)
# of tweets by local users containing links: 63595 (21.9%)
# of tweets by local users that were retweets: 17756 (6.1%)
# of tweets by local users that were twooshes: 10054 (3.5%)

I think the retweet number might be a little off, due to the new retweet functionality on Twitter.com, but it’s close. Here are the numbers above in graphic form:

Keep in mind that is based entirely on the text inside the location field of the user’s profile, and is definitely a minimum. Still, gives you an idea of the breakdown.

Some other interesting stats for the month:

Final Thoughts

User growth is still increasing, albeit rather slowly. There were only 9 days with less than 9000 tweets this month, and we broke the 12,000 per day mark for the first time.

Since January, I have identified just over 13,500 local users. The number above, 5850, is how many of them were active in November.

Calgary stats are up next, followed by December stats, then 2009 year-in-review stats. Stay tuned!

State of the Calgary Twittersphere – October 2009

Welcome to the eighth State of the Calgary Twittersphere, my look at the intersection of Twitter and Calgary.

If a tweet is “about Calgary” it contains either the word Calgary, the #yyc hashtag, or both.

For October 2009:

# of local users: 7283 (an increase of 139 from September)

To clarify, that means there were 7283 users who posted at least one tweet in October 2009 with their location set to something that makes them an Calgarian as described above. This number should be treated as a minimum – there are probably many more Calgary users without their location set or that were not captured for some other reason.

Here are the rest of the stats for October 2009:

# of tweets by local users: 298538
# of tweets by local users containing #yyc or #calgary: 7464 (2.5%)
# of tweets by local users that were replies: 88740 (29.7%)
# of tweets by local users containing links: 84794 (28.4%)
# of tweets by local users that were retweets: 20120 (6.7%)
# of tweets by local users that were twooshes: 9133 (3.1%)

I’ve heard that some folks in Calgary use #yyc while others use #calgary, so I decided to do the stats for both this month. Of the 7464 total tagged tweets, just 934 of them used #calgary. Of those, just 381 did not also include #yyc.

Here are the numbers above in graphic form:

Here are the top clients used by local users for posting updates:

Some other interesting stats for the month:

Final Thoughts

User growth was less than Edmonton this month, which doesn’t happen very often! The number of tweets posted by local users is still on the rise, however. There were 5 days in October with more than 11,000 local tweets posted.

Since March, I have identified just over 16,200 local users. The number above, 7283, is how many of them were active in October.

Some other interesting stats for the month:

Final Thoughts

I was hoping to have stats on Lists in this month’s post, but the API isn’t quite ready yet, so stay tuned for that next month! The increase in users this month was more than double last month’s increase, which is good. The number of tweets being posted by local users continues to rise also – there were three days this month with over 10,000 tweets posted.

Since January, I have identified nearly 12,500 local users. The number above, 5631, is how many of them were active in October.

Calgary stats are up next!

I anticipated the user growth for September would have been larger, but at least it’s still going in the right direction! As with Edmonton, the number of tweets being posted by local users is on the rise – there were seven days this month with over 10000 tweets posted.

Since March, I have identified just over 15,300 local users. The number above, 7144, is how many of them were active in September.

Very little user growth again this month. I was expecting it to pick up again in September, but that obviously didn’t happen. The number of tweets being posted by local users is definitely on the rise, however. There were seven days this month with over 9000 tweets posted.

Since January, I have identified just over 11,600 local users. The number above, 5447, is how many of them were active in September.

Should have the Calgary stats up soon!
